Halcyon Software Announces Advanced Job Scheduler v11 for IBM i to Improve Business Continuity

PETERBOROUGH, England, April 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

Adds iASP functionality to maintain availability of all your scheduled jobs

Halcyon Software, the global leader in systems management software, has announced the immediate availability of Advanced Job Scheduler v11 for the IBM i platform. It enables organisations to schedule and track complex job streams across different IBM i systems to ensure that business processes are running smoothly. Uniquely, this latest version is the first job scheduler that can be run on an independent auxiliary storage pool (iASP) to maintain the availability of IBM i infrastructures and protect against unexpected disruption. It provides an additional layer of continuity assurance enabling organisations to meet all regulatory requirements.

According to Carole Chandler, Sales and Marketing Director at Halcyon Software: "This iASP functionality was developed in short timescales to meet the demanding job scheduling requirements of major IBM users. It enables organisations to ensure that key business processes run reliably, deliver significant cost savings and provides a rapid return on investment."

Advanced Job Scheduler v11 ensures that processes run at the designated time and the iASP functionality enables it to be ported seamlessly to another system in the event of disk corruption or other unexpected issues. For extra resilience, Halcyon's Advanced Job Scheduler can be moved to other locations to minimise business disruption.

Data can also be imported from other third party schedulers for the IBM i, such as Help Systems Robot/SCHEDULE and organisations can convert to Halcyon's solution using its reliable methodology for job migration. The software will deliver significant cost savings through reduced maintenance fees, decreased manual processes and the delivery of greater efficiencies for data centres that have outgrown their existing job scheduler.

Furthermore, Halcyon operates a fair pricing policy so that if an IBM customer increases the Commercial Processing Workload (CPW) of their hardware in the future, they will be protected against additional licence and maintenance fees. Halcyon software is not priced on a CPW basis.

The new Advanced Job Scheduler is available immediately, either as a standalone utility or as part of Halcyon's Level 4 Operations Centre Suite monitoring software. Customers already using Halcyon's Advanced Job Scheduler can upgrade to this latest release free of charge.

A Computer To Grade Essays, To Save Professors Time

Professors everywhere could get a break, thanks to the work of online-learning initiative EdX. The Harvard and M.I.T.-founded nonprofit will be giving away--for free--a software system that uses artificial intelligence to instantly read and grade essays. But the New York Times reports that the initiative has its critics.

skeptics say the automated system is no match for live teachers. One longtime critic, Les Perelman, has drawn national attention several times for putting together nonsense essays that have fooled software grading programs into giving high marks. He has also been highly critical of studies that purport to show that the software compares well to human graders.

My first and greatest objection to the research is that they did not have any valid statistical test comparing the software directly to human graders, said Mr. Perelman, a retired director of writing and a current researcher at M.I.T.

As is so often the case when human tasks are automated, the strongest defense is that it wont actually replace the humans; it will just increase their capabilities--in this case, their ability to assign more essays.

One of our focuses is to help kids learn how to think critically, said Victor Vuchic, a program officer at the Hewlett Foundation. Its probably impossible to do that with multiple-choice tests. The challenge is that this requires human graders, and so they cost a lot more and they take a lot more time.

Whether university professors and their students will embrace the trade-off of more writing for more computer grading remains to be seen. EdX has a consortium of 12 universities involved in its online-learning offerings, where it may be an easier sell.

Trillium Software Executive to Speak at IDMA on Impact of Data Quality for Improving Insurance Claims Outcomes

BILLERICA, MA--(Marketwired - Apr 16, 2013) - Trillium Software, a business of Harte-Hanks, Inc. (NYSE: HHS) and a leading provider of Total Data Quality solutions for insurance companies, today announced that Michael Chochrek, Trillium's insurance solutions principal consultant, has been invited to speak on a panel for "Improving Claims Outcomes with Better Data Quality" at the Insurance Data Management Association's (IDMA) 2013 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia on Tuesday, April 16th at 9:30 a.m. Eastern. The panel will be moderated by Stephen Applebaum, senior analyst for P&C Insurance, Aite Group.

The discussion will cover the increasing importance and impact of data quality on insurance claims processing and outcomes. Key topics will include insurance claims process issues, examples of how quality data impacts claims results, staff and operations best practices, and the continued increase in questionable claims, as well as solutions for improving and monitoring the quality of claims data.

"As insurance companies focus on customer retention and improving top and bottom line results, many claims professionals lack the ability to access and analyze all of their claims data," said Chochrek. "By utilizing the critical information often 'hidden' in free-form text fields and scanned documents, claims professionals can gain greater insight into the true risk exposure of each claim and make more informed business decisions."

Trillium Software's Claims Data Quality solution empowers insurance companies to automate the assessment, monitoring and analysis of the full universe of claims data, including unstructured data in free-form text description fields such as adjuster notes and claims correspondence in electronic document formats such as PDFs. With greater insight, claims professionals can reduce claims costs, increase customer retention, improve operational efficiency and mitigate risks. Apple 'in talks' over Facebook Home for iPhone

Weve shown them what weve built and were just in an ongoing conversation, Mosseri said, referring to discussions with Apple.

On iPhone devices, the Home software would be tailored to what Apple prefers, Mosseri said. It could look much different than the Android version.

It may or may not be Home, he said. We could also just bring some of the design values to the iOS app. That might be how it ends up. Or we could build just the lock screen. Maybe then its not called Home, its called something else.

Apple declined to comment.

Mark Zuckerberg has said Facebook and Apple have a great relationship.

We are integrated into the operating system with them, Zuckerberg said. We have an active dialogue to do more with them.

Already, Facebook has issued an update to its iOS app that brings Chat Heads, a new feature in Facebook Home, to the iPhone.

But the suggestion that Apple could allow Facebook Home or anything similar on iOS drew scepticism from industry observers. Many doubt that Apple would bend its strict rules to allow any other company to influence the user interface of iOS. At the unveiling of Facebook Home last month, Zuckerberg admitted it would not be possible on iOS in the same form as the Android version.

Wed love to offer this on iPhone, and we just cant today, and we will work with Apple to do the best experience that we can within what they want, he said.
