Eisenhower students compete for spelling honors

"Compress."

It means, "to press together; force into less space," "to cause to become a solid mass" and "to condense, shorten, or abbreviate," according to dictionary.com

But for Lily Parker, fifth-grader at Eisenhower Elementary School, the word meant she was the spelling bee champion of her school Thursday.

Parker was one of 13 fifth-graders who voluntarily participated in the school's annual spelling bee. The winner of any participating schools in the area will then advance to the McPherson County Spelling Bee, going head-to-head with other school champions Jan. 26. County schools rotate hosting, and it is Eisenhower's turn this year.

Words and definitions are given by Scripps, a national spelling bee association.

Eisenhower's bee lasted six rounds, beginning with the word "remarkable." Three participants were eliminated in rounds one and two, and two students were out in the third.

By round four, only five contestants remained, all of which were girls. Three of these were Taylor Bruce, Heather Schimming and Ella Eaton, all of whom were eliminated before the battle for first in the sixth round.

Then there were two.

Josie Strathman successfully advanced "experiment," and Parker answered with "substitute." It would be "remedial" that spelled disaster for Strathman, which allowed Parker to take the upper hand with "villa." Parker was then required to successfully spell one more word, "compress," which allowed her to finish on top.

Parker said she practiced for the spelling bee but was not confident going into the competition. "I was really scared," she said. "I didn't want to put myself through the doubt of loosing. But I feel really good now that I've tried something new."

GEORGE TOWN: THE DAP-led state government's directive for organizers to obtain approval before using the word "Penang" in the names of their events has drawn criticism from various quarters.

"This is something coming from a learned person. I just don't know what to say.

"I cannot stand it anymore. They (the DAP) already gave me the biggest joke of the year when they changed the party's Central Executive Committee's (CEC) results and now they are giving me the second biggest joke of the year (with this)."

Teng, who is also Gerakan secretary-general, said the word "Penang" belonged to all Penangites and not just Guan Eng.

"We will continue to use the word. The state government can serve us an injunction if they want."

Guan Eng's directive yesterday followed the state government's issue against the Penang Run 2013, which is being jointly-organized by non-governmental organization Tanjung Social Club and the Penang Forward Sports Club this Sunday.

The run coincides with Thaipusam and has already drawn criticism from Deputy Chief Minister II and Hindu Endowment Board chairman Dr P. Ramasamy, who accused the organizers of being "insensitive" to the Hindu community. The Penang DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) has also demanded that the event be called off.

As the issue developed, Guan Eng yesterday told a press conference that the state government's approval must be obtained first before anyone could use the word "Penang" for their event names.

Guan Eng was quoted as saying that "it is always assumed that any event with the word 'Penang' is organized by the state government."

Earlier, Teng also hit out at Ramasamy, who reportedly accused Gerakan of being involved in the Penang Run 2013.

Event organisers must get state approval to use ‘Penang’

By Opalyn Mok

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 21 Organisers must get approval from the state first if they plan to use the word Penang in their events, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

This applies to any event organised by private organisations that are held in Penang, he said.

This is to avoid any confusion by the public as it is always assumed that any event with the word Penang is organised by the state government, he said.

Lim (picture) was denying the state governments involvement in a Penang Run event that has drawn criticism from the Hindu community as it would be held on Thaipusam day, which is celebrated on a grand scale in the state.

The event organiser did not get the states sanction to use the word Penang and the event is misleading as the public assumed it was organised by the state government, he said.

He claimed the state had received a deluge of complaints from the public and Hindu community over the sporting event being held on Thaipusam, a day that is considered sacred by the Hindus.

We are not discouraging sporting events but in view of the complaints we have received, we have to deny that the state government has anything to do with it at all, he told a press conference today.

Lim said that while it was acceptable for years-old events to use Penang in their names, new events such as the Penang Run must first gain approval before applying the word.

Lim, who said the flyer for the event showed that it was supported by the federal governments Penang Youth and Sports Department, then called on Putrajaya to be more sensitive to the Hindu community.
