Details emerge on show shut down by police at Wellmont Theatre in Montclair

MONTCLAIR Police released more details today about the unruly crowd that prompted the shutdown of a sold-out dance party at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair last night.

At least 24 people were sent to the hospital, with more treated on the scene for minor injuries and seven men were arrested following the chaotic mob scene that developed in downtown Montclair, police said.

Around 7:35 p.m. Montclair police arrived at the theater on Seymour Street after numerous calls about a large crowd outside. About 2,500 people, mostly college-aged, were lined up waiting for the 9:45 p.m. sold-out, Barstool Blackout tour, a rave-style electronic dance party put on by the website barstoolsports.com.

The Barstool Blackout Tours Facebook page described the event as: Touring the nation leaving nothing but a path of destruction in its wake. Lazers, Fog, Blacklights, Stroked and Everything that Glows right in your eyeball. An absolute orgy of sound and lights for all your senses. The series of shows that began in February has been held at venues all along the East Coast.

Police described the scene outside of the theater as drunken chaos, with people stumbling, unable to speak and under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A 22-year-old Bedminster resident told police she'd been bitten on the calf by someone, according to police.

Another female told police her friend was unconscious and police found the young woman passed out against a fence with the crowd beginning to trample her. She was carried to an ambulance and treated for injuries at Mountainside Hospital, police said.

In total, 24 people were taken to the hospital, the majority treated for symptoms related to alcohol poisoning, police said.

The crowd of intoxicated coeds, many clad in neon, became unruly around 9 p.m. as people started shoving their way to the front of the line causing injuries, police said.

"Based upon the crowd losing control and the number of already intoxicated individuals in the area, police decided that for the safety of all involved the event would be cancelled," the release said.

ISU: RAVE alert system effective

Two Indiana State University students were confronted at gunpoint late Wednesday night just off campus, but ISU officials did not issue a campus-wide RAVE Alert until almost ten hours after the incident occurred.

The victims told police they were crossing the Long John Silvers parking lot near the intersection of Fourth and Ohio streets about 11 p.m. when a white female with shoulder length blonde hair pointed a gun at them and demanded the drinks they were carrying, according to the RAVE Alert.

The suspect was sitting in an older model silver colored vehicle and was accompanied by another female the students could not describe, according to the alert. The students were able to flee the scene without injury. ISU and Terre Haute Police are seeking further information about the incident and the alert did not indicate the suspects had been apprehended.

Despite the students reporting the crime an hour after it occurred to ISU Police, authorities waited until Thursday morning to notify the campus community. A RAVE Alert was sent via text message and e-mail at 9:15 a.m., describing the incident as an attempted robbery and directing people to Public Safetys website for more details.

Public Safety director Bill Mercier said he believed it was unnecessary to activate the RAVE Alert system so late at night.

It wasnt that significant and didnt pose an immediate threat, Mercier said. I thought it could wait for the morning.

According to the Indiana State University Police Departments annual security and fire report from 2011, the Department of Public Safety shall make timely warnings under the heading crime alerts when the Chief of Police or his/her designee affirms that the offense presents a threat to the university community.

The purpose of the alert is to provide information in a timely manner to aid in preventing similiar events, the report also states; but students disagree with the time lapse in which the alert was issued.

I feel like we should have been alerted beforehand, said freshman business major Austin Robbins. There are still a lot of people out at that time of night, and where it happened wasnt far from campus.

Freshman elementary education major Ashley Buchannan also agrees, saying It was kind of pointless sending us an e-mail this morning.I would want to know after it happened, not almost 12 hours after it happened.

PlayStation Orbis and Xbox 720 both restrict “used” games

Console game giants Microsoft and Sony may be ushering in a new era of media control with their Xbox 720 and PlayStation Orbis systems as both have been tipped this month to be placing unheard-of controls on so-called used games. These tips would have the next-generation console gaming systems both cutting down on game rental and sales services like GameStop and would essentially put online re-sales of games at a standstill. How this will affect sales of the consoles themselves is yet to be seen.

Both Microsoft and Sony appear to be considering having control over used game hardware for the future in several ways. If youve got a PlayStation Orbis, for example, and you pick up any old PlayStation game thatd been sold to someone other than yourself and played on a console that wasnt the one youre using now, restrictions will come into play. In this case youll have a restricted amount of gameplay available to you with the full experience available for an additional price through the PlayStation Network.

For the Xbox 720, tips from several sources have been noting the complete cut-off of used gameplay altogether. Each game will be tied to the first console it is played on, then thats it! Downloadable games and one-user-disks will be the only legal means for gamers to play games on their Xbox 720 consoles if rumors prove to be true.

Is this agreeable to you, the average or hardcore gamer?

Paula Deen Suffers Legal Setback In 'N Word' Lawsuit

By Jen Heger - Radar Assistant Managing Editor

Paula Deen has suffered a legal setback in an explosive 'N word' lawsuit that was filed against her by a former general manager of one of her restaurants, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

Lisa Jackson filed the lawsuit March 6 in Georgia against Paula Deen Enterprises, claiming a shocking pattern of alleged racism, including the use of the 'N word', sexual harassment and infliction of emotional distress and assault while working at Uncle Bubba's Oyster House.

EXCLUSIVE DOCS: Judge Denies Paula Deens Request For A Gag Order

Deen's lawyers sought a gag order in the case because according to court documents, "a protective order is necessary because Ms. Jackson and her counsel have made abundantly clear that they intend to engage in a path of personal and financial destruction because Paula Deen would not pay their pretrial settlement demand...Through her cooking and television exposure, Mrs. Deen has arguably become the face of Southern cuisine and living....For a public figure such as Mrs. Deen, even if Ms. Jackson's allegations are proven untrue, the harm resulting from the continuing mass dissemination of the allegations may never be undone." However, Judge Louisa Abbot has now denied the gag order request and said in her written ruling, "Having considered the parties' arguments, the Court finds the litigants' concerns about potentially adverse pretrial publicity and the potential effects of damage to their reputations do not outweigh any of the constitutional principles invoked by this motion, including freedom of press and speech."

The shocking lawsuit has blockbuster allegations including one in which Jackson states that she was appointed by Deen to handle the catering and staff for Bubba's wedding in 2007, and she asked Deen what the servers should wear: "Well what I would really like is a bunch of little n***ers to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around," Jackson alleges Deen told her. "Now, that would be a true Southern wedding wouldn't it? But we can't do that because the media would be on me about that." Another alleged racist incident listed in the lawsuit: "In the presence of Ms. Jackson and Uncle Bubba's restaurant manager and a vendor, Bubba Hiers stated they should send President Obama to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico so he could n***er-rig it."

Mindanao youth urged to join Unilab Ideas Positive

Thursday, March 29, 2012

UNILAB Ideas Positive, the only social marketing congress and competition for college students in the country today, is expanding this year from Metro Manila to the entire Philippines, tapping students from the Mindanao region to join and become part of this campaign.

The nationwide expansion is a result of the encouraging response from universities and college students to the program, which was first launched in 2010 to serve as venue for Filipino youth to improve the health and wellness of their communities with their social marketing ideas.

Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos.

The increasing number of positive ideas we receive every year and the passion the youth have shown in helping their communities have inspired us to open the venue to more youth in the Philippines, said Unilab Ideas Positive program lead Barry Barrientos.

By partnering with more youth on this cause, we believe that well also be able to help more communities become healthier and more productive, Barrientos said.

Fifteen communities all over the country will benefit from this expansion through the social marketing programs by 15 youth teams that will all receive P100,000 seed money for the implementation of their ideas.

The groups will also be flown in to Manila, with free hotel accommodation, meals and transportation, to attend a three-day boot camp, where they can learn social marketing approaches from a pool of experts through workshops and case studies.

Last year, the participants were trained by reputable leaders and experts which included social marketing guru Dr. Ned Roberto, CNN 2009 Hero of the Year Efren Peaflorida and RockEd Founder Gang Badoy, among others.

One of the participants to the boot camp, Jhanette Co of the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, thanked the program for giving young people like her the opportunity to be heard and make a difference.
