Beach fun this New Year’s

The New Year is all about new beginnings and therefore Goa, where most of Mumbais bold and beautiful bade goodbye to the last sunset of the year, was also witness to omens of many overdue endings and some surprising new beginnings.

While most of the action unfolded at adventurous Baga, upmarket Vagator (the new venue for Sunburn and the favourite of Mumbais fashion frat), busy Calangute and laid-back Candolim (home to Mallyas Kingfisher Villa), it was the Ibiza-esque Ashwem beach that attracted lovers and celebrities looking to let their hair down away from prying eyes. Further north from the more well-known Goan beaches, Ashwems isolation made it a popular draw for European nudists. But thats another story.

Increasingly now, large stretches are being developed into beach clubs that are attracting even a lot of Indian celebrities with the promise of discreet fun. The newest addition on the strip, which already has Marbella Beach Club and the much-touted Bardo, is Sunset Ashram. Among the gang which partied the New Years Eve here were tennis ace Sania Mirza, south star Ram Charan, Adam Bedi, Varun Dhawan, Karan Thacker and Siddhant Kapoor.

While Sania had explained away hubby Shoaib Maliks absence during her birthday celebrations in November, interestingly there was no sign of him even for this one. For the cross border couple whove been working at what is increasingly a long-distance marriage, conspicuous absences at personal and social milestones point to something more than the vagaries of busy lives.
