Internet 'proves real lifeline'

6 February 2012 Last updated at 20:22 ET By Emma Kasprzak BBC News

After being diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer in 2008, teenager Rosie Kilburn decided to keep an online diary about her life.

She died in September at the age of 19, but since then her mother Jo has continued to update the blog.

"Rosie decided that rather than feeling crushed by cancer she would do something about it," Mrs Kilburn said.

"Her blog gave her an avenue to share what was happening. It opened up a whole new network."

Academics have found increasing numbers of vulnerable adults and seriously ill young people like Rosie have turned to social networking to communicate with their friends - and to make new ones.

Dr Emma Bond, senior lecturer in childhood and youth studies at University Campus Suffolk, has carried out research on cyber bullying and cyber abuse among young people and vulnerable adults but said the positive effects of social networking could equally not be ignored.

She said that while there were plenty of stories in the media of cyber bullying and children being groomed online by paedophiles, it was worth considering the positive impact the internet could have for young people.

"Something we're becoming more and more aware of is vulnerable adults using social media," Dr Bond said.

"One thing that is emerging is that people with Asperger syndrome and autism find it easier to communicate using sites like Facebook and are heavy users of social media."

She added: "That can be a problem if they don't access those sites carefully and we are looking at doing more research in that area."

'Less shy'

Emma Thompson, who has Asperger syndrome and manages an online community for other people with the condition, said social networking could be good - but warned there were risks.

"I am more confident and less shy on [the internet] as it's a lot easier to communicate than face-to-face," she said.

However, she said a potential problem was that people learnt to be over-reliant on the internet for communication.

"Individuals don't end up going out ever so they end up staying in, isolated and slowly losing their limited communication abilities that they may have," she said.

Caroline Hattersley, from the National Autistic Society, said social networking could allow people with autism to overcome fears about face-to-face communication when trying to find people with similar interests.

"Social networks can be a stepping stone into better social engagement. It takes away non-verbal expression which some people with autism find quite difficult to understand," she said.

"Social networking shouldn't be seen as an alternative to social engagement but what it can do is help people who find face-to-face engagement hard."

Dr Bond said as well as vulnerable adults, going online could benefit seriously ill children.

'Real lifeline'

She said: "Another thing we're looking at is the link the internet provides to the outside world for children with a life-limiting illness.

"Previously they may have felt locked away in a hospice but the internet can be a real lifeline for keeping in touch with friends and getting them out there sharing their experiences."

Mrs Kilburn said her daughter Rosie had used Facebook and texting to keep updated with what her friends were doing, but added that her blog had given her "a new network of friends who supported her".

She said the family had decided to keep the blog going after Rosie's death because of the community that had built up around it.

"We needed that community as well," Mrs Kilburn said.

"It helped us with our grieving and enabled us to keep her fundraising going."

Tuesday marks the 2012 Safer Internet Day, an annual event designed to encourage people to use internet technology more responsibly.

This year it coincides with the week-long BBC Share Take Care campaign, in partnership with the UK Safer Internet Centre, to raise awareness of issues surrounding safeguarding reputation online.

Dr Bond said that although it was important to be aware of the risks, those who look after young people and vulnerable adults should also be aware of the benefits the internet affords.

She said: "It's about opening up dialogue and raising awareness.

"It's very easy to get caught up in the risks of the internet but it is also a fantastic opportunity."

Social networking sites must work within laws, says Sachin Pilot

Bangalore/New Delhi, Feb 6 (ANI): Minister for State, Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications, Sachin Pilot today said that internet giant, google and social networking sites like Facebook should work within the ambit of the Indian law.

Pilot, while speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of India Semiconductor Association (ISA) Vision Summit 2012 in Bangalore said: "Whether it's a social media website company or any company, for that matter they all have to operate within the laws of the country and what we have said is that there must be responsible behaviour on both the sides. While we believe that the court is of course within its right to make sure that the companies that operate in India have to work within the laws," said Pilot.

The case has stoked fears about censorship in the world's largest democracy.

A lower court in New Delhi told the companies on Monday to put in writing the steps they had taken to block offensive content, and submit reports to the court within 15 days.

Meanwhile in New Delhi, Santosh Pandey, counsel for petitioner Mufti Aijaz Arshad Qasmi said 22 social networking websites to file their compliance report on removing objectionable contents within 15 days.

"Today, the lower court has ordered to file the WS (written statement) by the opposite parties of Facebook, Google etc and it was a clear-cut order placed by the court which has directed them that they have to file their WS within 15 days from today," said Pandey.

The founder of Fatwaonline.com, Mufti Aijaz Arshad Qasmi, had filed a petition in the court for removing offensive and objectionable content from the websites.

Last year, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal had urged officials from Facebook, Google, Yahoo and Twitter to remove offensive material that were available on the websites.

As a result, a squall of criticism was seen from the Internet users who objected regarding the censorship of the websites.

Fewer than one in 10 of India's 1.2 billion populations have access to the Internet, but that still makes it the third-biggest Internet market after China and the United States. The number of Internet users in India is expected to almost triple to 300 million over the next three years.

Despite the new rules to block offensive content, India's Internet access is still largely uncensored, in contrast to the tight controls in neighbouring China. (ANI)

Will Facebook's IPO Help it Beat Google?

With the Facebook initial public offering (IPO) now official, industry and financial analysts say that a huge influx of cash could enable the social networking company to topple Google from its dominant position in the online world.

Facebook had been expected to file its IPO papers with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission this week, and it did just that late Wednesday afternoon. Analysts and potential investors were eagerly awaiting what is one of the largest IPOs in recent years.

With an expected valuation of $100 billion, financial analysts say the IPO is worth about $5 billion. That's a big potential war chest for a company that has been fighting for social networking users and advertising dollars with the largest Internet company on Earth -- Google.

Given the popularity of its search engine, along with services and products like Google Maps, Android, and Chrome, Google obviously is no slouch: It has 32,000 employees around the world and $37.86 billion in annual revenue. That's $1.166 million per employee in revenue.

But Facebook, with just 3000 employees, pulls in $3.8 billion in revenue; that's $1.8 million in revenue per employee.

"Facebook has 800 million users," noted Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group. "How many companies have 800 million anything? The thing that's interesting is that Facebook is profitable and solidly profitable. And an IPO is a huge step for any company, but it's the validation for Facebook, their business and their social networking model."

Facebook and Google are increasingly in each other's wheel house.

Just this past year, Google launched Google+, its own social network and a new direct competitor to Facebook. (Just last week it made Google+ more available to teens, another move to broaden its appeal.) And Google CEO Larry Page has said he plans to integrate Google+ social features into the company's wide range of services and products.

With a lot of new cash, Facebook could make a lot of moves. Olds wonders whether Facebook would try to buy Yahoo, which has been struggling, or even Twitter.

And both Olds and Scott Sweet, a senior managing partner with IPO Boutique, said Facebook could use the money to hire more employees and acquire other Internet companies. Theey also pointed out that Facebook could use the cash to find partners and set up operations in China, which could dramatically increase an already immense user base.

It would take some time -- and Facebook would have to successfully pull off some big moves -- but it could one day dominate Google, according to Sweet. "I do believe that anything is possible with Facebook," he added.

Unseating Google would be no easy feat, though.

First off, according to Olds, the companies are not substitutes for each other. Google is the basis for most searches. Facebook is the basis for most social connections.

And while a profitable IPO would make Facebook stronger, Google is still substantially larger.

"It gives Facebook a ... war chest," said Olds. "Google, though, has $45 billion in cash and short-term investments. That's a really big war chest. Even with this influx of cash, Facebook still can't play in Google's league in terms of cash."

Mark Siegel, a managing director with Menlo Ventures LLC, said Google came along to surpass Microsoft as the biggest tech company. And now Facebook is poised to take the lead from Google.

"Facebook is potentially the platform company for the next 10 years," said Siegel. "I absolutely think this is a scary event for Google. Will it make [Facebook] dominant over Google? Well, Facebook already does dominate Google in terms of social networking. This will enable Facebook to compete with Google in a lot of areas."

Could Facebook push past Google?

"Well, this certainly enables Facebook to move in that direction," said Siegel.

Social networking king Facebook turns eight

Houston: Facebook, the world's most popular social networking site, has turned eight.

With an estimated 845 million active subscribers, the social networking giant still continues to grow, since its launch on February 4, 2004 and is most likely to have 1 billion users by August this year.

While, the company CEO Mark Zuckerberg is best known as the man who built Facebook, the company has three other co-founders, all college roommates and fellow students of Harvard University; Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes.

The four initially built the service exclusively for Harvard students, but it was soon expanded to other colleges and eventually added support for students at various other universities.

Initially before its public launch, it was called 'thefacebook.com'. However, on 4th February 2008, Zukerberg renamed to domain name and launched what we know today as 'Facebook'.

Facebook has not only put Mark Zukerberg in the list of top and youngest millionaires but also helped a lot of start ups, non profits and other companies grow, interact and increase sales.

In January 2009, Compete.com study ranked Facebook as the most used social networking service by worldwide monthly active users.

Quantcast estimates Facebook has 138.9 million monthly unique US visitors in May 2011.

According to Social Media Today, in April 2010 an estimated 41.6 per cent of the US population had a Facebook account.

In India, Facebook has registered a growth of 132 per cent this year, which is higher than many other countries.

In some countries, such as Turkey or Chile, up to 80 per cent of Internet users are registered with Facebook. The Russian Facebook audience exceeds 5 million people.

However, company's market growth has started to stall in some regions, with the site losing 7 million active users in the United States and Canada in May 2011.

The company has filed for an initial public offering (IPO) on February 1, 2012.
