South Africa: Will Social Media Influence Election Campaigning?

A big change in political campaigning since South Africa's last national elections has been the rise in social media. But how has this new dynamic manifested in South Africa, and to what extent is it a factor in political campaigning?

The use of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and YouTube has emerged as an important electoral campaigning tool in recent years. Understanding the electoral power of social media could prove very rewarding for political parties, particularly in the lead-up to the 2014 national elections.

The potential impact of social media campaigning first became evident in the 2008 United States (US) presidential election. President Barack Obama's campaign included the use of sites such as Facebook, MySpace and YouTube, along with other social media such as podcasting and mobile messaging.

The election, dubbed by some the 'Facebook election', saw nearly 70% of the vote among Americans aged 25 years and younger going to Obama.

The number of his Facebook and Twitter followers increased on a daily basis, and the sites allowed users to publish activities and send postings to one another.

By 2011, Obama's Twitter account - @BarackObama, which he used to promote legislation and support for his policies - was the third Twitter account in the world to have at least 10 million followers.

In Africa, a recent example of the use of social media in an election campaign was during the 2013 general elections in Kenya.

Social media became one of the key tools used by most of the presidential candidates to engage with young voters. President Uhuru Kenyatta's use of social media and digital communication played an instrumental role in his election campaign.

Kenyatta's Facebook page received close to 500 000 'likes' or followers in the run-up to the elections, making it one of the most 'liked' pages in Kenya.

In a research study conducted by Portland Communications, Kenya has been identified as Africa's second most active country on Twitter, following South Africa. Kenya has over 14 million Internet users, many of whom make use of social media sites.

Social media site draws parent warnings

As social networking evolves, communities and organizations find new ways to share information through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, or myriad other outlets.

But officials at Manchester Essex Regional Middle/High School are sounding warnings to parents regarding what they say is an increasingly popular site called Ask.fm.

Unlike Facebook and other sites, the Latvia-based Ask.fm can be completely anonymous. And with Ask.fm, there is little to no accountability in potential cases of cyberbullying meaning that if a user posts a hateful message, there is no way to tell who did it, according to Manchester Essex Middle School Principal Steve Guditus.

School districts across Cape Ann and elsewhere are familiar with social networking sites, and many officials within all three districts have their own blogs and Twitter accounts, sharing educational goals, classroom activities, and the latest school sports updates.

Guditus, like Superintendent of Schools Pamela Beaudoin, has his own blog as well. But it was the new principal who first posted about Ask.fm and the dangers it could pose to students.

Gudituss blog post notes an uptick in Ask.fm use at the middle school.

Remember, technology itself is not the danger; students engaging in risky online behavior is the danger, Gudituss blog post reads. Please remind your child that his/her behavior both online and offline should be consistent. The message also appeared in the schools weekly newsletter.

Manchester Essex is not the only district on Cape Ann tackling the issue; Rockport Middle High School Principal Philip Conrad said he is familiar with Ask.fm as well.

Conrad said Rockport has a good relationship with other districts when it comes to cyberbullying. If a Rockport student happens to be involved with cyber harassment with a student from another community, the two schools are good at sharing information, he said.

We have had instances where a student of ours was a perpetrator, or victim (of cyberbullying) from students in other districts, he said. Weve got a good relationship in the neighborhood.

Social Messaging Players Challenge the Status Quo of Mobile Social Networking

The social messaging market is rapidly evolving and expanding as messaging players begin to amass hundreds of millions of users. In 2014 we will see further acceleration in user growth, together with a widening in the scope of social messaging services. More interestingly, in 2014 Ovum expects to see social messaging players challenging the status quo of mobile social networking and media and creating a paradigm shift in social media that will impact several OTT giants.

According to Ovum's latest report, services such as Line and WhatsApp are mobile first services and are changing the way the consumer interacts with social media -- be it messaging, voice, games or utilities and widening the possibilities of the type of social services that can be accessed on mobile.

Neha Dharia, Analyst, Consumer Telecoms and author of the report says, social media as an industry is undergoing a major transition, one of the key drivers of which is the rapid proliferation of social messaging services. Social messaging apps are mobile centric services are intuitive and viral in growth have the ability to reach a wider audience. As new services get added on to messaging apps, we can expect these services to evolve into mobile media platforms which large user bases.

"In addition, we expect social messaging to slowly but surely start to generate revenues, which will assist in the evolution of social messaging players' offerings from messaging apps to holistic mobile media platforms," Dharia says.

This shift has been driven mainly by mobile-first services due to more consumer accessing social services through mobile devices. The mobile internet used on variety of mobile devices is rapidly taking off in developed and emerging markets alike and will form the basis of the internet in the future.

Dharia states, "There is an increasing shift to mobile devices on either side of the development process and there is no doubt that mobile-first services make fuller use of the advantages of mobile than services that are ported from the PC to mobile."

Social messaging players will trial services that move well beyond communications, including games, payments, information services and utilities. Social messaging apps will continue to evolve into mobile media platforms in their own right, using mobile technology to create contextual services for consumers.

"The rise of this new breed of mobile-focused, messaging-centric OTT players will be the driving force behind the changes in social networking and media services. By 2014 users will no longer need to access

services only through a social network rather they will be able to access a service on its own. This service will then be connected by several channels to social networks, social media and other consumer services. What was once a horizontal service platform will have evolved into the glue holding several consumer services together," concludes Dharia.
