SEO-First Thinking: How to Promote SEO For Company Growth – Search Engine Journal

For SEO to be truly effective it needs to have impact across the breadth of a business.

From product, to design, to engineering, to customer services SEO can and should be baked into processes far beyond digital marketing.

But how do you change an organizations mindset from SEO as a marketing channel, to SEO as the bedrock for success?

With insights from my talk at brightonSEO,well identify ways of refocusing your business with an SEO-first mentality.

Many companies claim to be SEO-first in that they understand its importance at a marketing, product, and development level. Unfortunately, they stop there.

When it comes to decision-making, the SEO team gets a token hearing, or just an alert to run checks after a project has been completed.

SEO-first thinking isnt about the SEO teams views having more weight than other departments. Its also not about designing a companys website to serve the needs of SEO above all.

Encouraging SEO-first thinking in a company is about raising its importance and benefits to all stakeholders.

It is about changing the culture, so the questions surrounding any new initiative or feature start with What might the impact be for SEO?

That all sounds a touch arrogant. In any organization, there are lots of departments championing what is right by their channel or specialism. What makes SEO so special?

The main crux of the argument for bringing SEO to the fore is simply this: If something happens that negatively affects SEO, it can take a considerable amount of time for it to be rectified.

SEO, especially for an online organization, is highly important for reputation management, leads, brand awareness, and ultimately revenue.

Its not alone in that.

But it is fairly unique in that not many other departments that impact these can be damaged so easily and take so long to then repair.

A coding mistake might bring a website to its knees, but it can often be rolled back the same day.

Writing a product description in a way that reduces conversion can be rectified as quickly as it takes to edit a page in a content management system (CMS).

A PPC campaign is accidentally turned off; it just needs to be turned back on again to be effective.

SEO issues, on the other hand, are not always as quick to spot. It might take time for our tools to alert us to a crawling block; a drop in rankings or traffic might be the first indicator that something has gone wrong.

It can then take months for rankings and traffic to return to where they once were.

In some extreme cases, they simply never do.

Arguably, no other form of marketing has the same breadth and duration of impact as SEO.

Stop paying into PPC campaigns, and the adverts will stop showing.

Dont send any more email marketing campaigns; the existing ones will be buried in inboxes.

Get SEO right, and you can have a continuing source of highly converting traffic for years to come at no additional expense.

There are many moving parts to successful organic search engine marketing.

There is little that an SEO team can accomplish on their own.

We often need to work closely with developers, content writers, and project managers.

We need sign-off from product owners, clients, and leadership before we can move forward with an idea.

Encouraging an SEO-first mindset can help those stakeholders buy into SEO recommendations.

Once youre on board with the idea that its OK to raise the importance of SEO in your business (and it really is), how do you go about it?

An important step in embedding SEO-first thinking in an organization is identifying key stakeholders. These are any people in and outside of the company whose work can influence or be influenced by SEO.

You will want to look across the organization at all of the departments that can help or hinder your work as an SEO. These are departments whose own work can cause changes to the way the website works, such as engineering and content teams.

It will also be any team that can impact online reputation, like branding and customer service teams.

One of the biggest stakeholders in SEO in any organization is the senior leadership team.

If you work in an agency or as an external consultant, this might take some time to ascertain. If you can, take a look at your clients corporate structure.This might be available on their website under a whos who type page, or you may have to ask your contact there to run you through it.

Dont forget that they may have other external partners like development agencies youll need to consider or even other teams at your own agency who are also working on the clients website.

Put together a matrix like the one below that will help you identify the level of risk and opportunity each team represents. Plot the department or agency on the matrix based on how much impact their work has on the outcome of SEO in the organization.

For example, the finance team may have little opportunity to negatively or positively affect SEO, other than signing off on the budget for the latest tool! That team would likely be plotted under low risk, low reward.

The engineering team can help to implement changes in code, improve load speed, and add schema mark-up to a page. Their department can yield high rewards for SEO.

Conversely, they can take the website offline, block search bots and no-index the website all too easily. They are, therefore, also a high risk.

Next, look for one or two people in each team under medium or high risk and reward. These people will be the ones that you use to help spread changes in the process and thinking around SEO. They are your champions.

It helps if they are people who already show curiosity about SEO and are in a position within their team to help lead and develop others.

Make sure you have regular catch-ups with these champions. Fill them in on the relevant developments in SEO that may impact their team. Offer them training and mentoring.

All of this will help with getting buy-in from the teams they represent.

Often a good way to get your colleagues to care about SEO is by making their management and leaders care about it.

If the department head understands the risks and rewards that SEO poses for their team, they will likely be motivated to help you achieve your SEO goals.

The key to this is helping them to understand the importance of SEO.

Look at department-specific impacts that SEO can have.

Speak to your Brand Director about the importance of reputation management and how SEO can help encourage favorable sentiment online. Discuss the benefits of keyword research and optimizing copy for search intent and conversions to your Head of Content.

Make it clear to each stakeholder why they should care about SEO.

Help the leadership, and their teams, to be bought into the work of SEO by sharing the impact they are having on key results.

Demonstrating to the engineering team that their work on reducing load speed had a direct, measurable impact on Core Web Vitals can help them see the link between their work and organic traffic and leads.

Show the customer success team that the survey they filled in detailing the most common questions asked by customers has been turned into an FAQ. Explain how this has generated an uplift in organic traffic.

The more you can link teams work to SEO success, the more amenable they may be to your ideas going forwards.

Along with training and gaining buy-in amongst your or clients teams, have them bake SEO into their own processes.

This might look like adding SEO considerations into their templates, like copy briefs or product requests. It may be adding SEO team members as stakeholders to engineering tickets.

Try to ensure that you are involved in QA and sign-offs for the type of activity that may pose a risk to the success of your SEO work.

For SEO to truly promote growth in an organization we need to break down siloes, encourage training, and keep SEO top-of-mind.

This means identifying knowledge gaps in key departments and ensuring ongoing upskilling in those areas.

SEO needs to be front and center in company communications.

Find the best way to do that at your company, whether its a monthly report and email briefing to key stakeholders or a company-wide message on your internal chat.

It is very possible for a company to begin thinking SEO-first, but it takes time and strong stakeholder relationships to make it work.

ChatGPT course side hustle: Meet the teachers making thousands – Business Insider

AI enthusiasts like Peggy Dean and Lance Junck are making thousands teaching students how to use ChatGPT. Courtesy of Peggy Dean (L) and Lance Junck.

Lance Junck first realized the power of OpenAI's ChatGPT when he asked it to write a 1,000 word landing page for a website. He was working at an e-commerce startup, and the AI chatbot was able to do his job in 45 seconds.

Since the former full-time brand strategist discovered the buzzy AI chatbot last November, Junck says he's dedicated hours each day playing with it and consuming "every piece of ChatGPT content" on the internet.

"I just knew it was going to be a game changer," Junck told Insider.

Impressed by its generative capabilities, Junck saw an opportunity to teach people how to use ChatGPT and make some extra cash.

In late December, he launched a ChatGPT course on online education platform Udemy called "ChatGPT Masterclass: A Complete ChatGPT Guide for Beginners." The seven-hour course teaches students everything from how to write their first ChatGPT prompt to the ways ChatGPT can be used by businesses, students, and programmers.

In fewer than four months, Junck's course enrolled more than 23,000 students and raked in more than $52,000 in revenue, according to screenshots of Junck's sales dashboard reviewed by Insider.

The course has grown so much that earlier this month he decided to quit his job at the e-commerce company and turn his side hustle into his full-time gig.

Junck is one of hundreds of instructors who are making money teaching people how to use ChatGPT. Users have flocked to the chatbot to develop code, create lesson plans, and start their own businesses. Some have even used the AI to enhance their dating profiles.

But some struggle to integrate ChatGPT into their workflow, three ChatGPT course instructors told Insider. They each said there is a steep learning curve to using the chatbot to generate accurate, desirable outputs.

This could be why courses on how to use the chatbot have flooded online education platforms.

Udemy, for instance, currently offers more than 429 courses on ChatGPT that have enrolled more than 417,000 learners interested in mastering the bot a 47% increase since March, Callie Kaminski, a spokesperson for Udemy, told Insider. Skillshare, another online learning platform, offers 61 ChatGPT courses, while online course provider Coursera offers 10, according to searches made at the time this story was published.

The ChatGPT course instructors who spoke to Insider are all self-taught.

Peggy Dean, a 36-year-old artist and art teacher who runs a ChatGPT course on Skillshare, admits she does not have the technical training to teach ChatGPT.

"This is not my area," Dean told Insider. Like Junck, she said she's been "obsessed" with ChatGPT ever since it came out and has read "tons of articles" on the chatbot.

Saurabh Bhatia, a 48-year-old medical doctor who also teaches ChatGPT on Skillshare, echoes the sentiment. He said he "never felt like an expert" in ChatGPT.

Rather, Junck, Bhatia, and Dean said that they started their courses to share how they've used ChatGPT to make their own work easier.

Dean, for instance, has used ChatGPT to enhance her SEO practices, write product descriptions and landing pages, and generate presentations for her online art school. She compiled everything she learned to make an online lecture she calls "ChatGPT for Creatives: AI-Powered SEO, Marketing, & Productivity" on Skillshare that teaches students how to use ChatGPT for social media, emails, and research.

Bhatia started aSkillshare course on how to write an e-book two years ago. He added an AI component to the course, including lectures on how to use AI tools like ChatGPT to generate text and build promotional campaigns, as well as how to use DALL-E, an AI-image generator, to create a custom-made book cover.

Without technical expertise, these amateur instructors are aware that competition in the ChatGPT course market which they said is growing could hurt their businesses.

It was "now or never," when it came to launching her course, Dean said.

Junck said he's wondered whether there's "some kid at Cornell getting his PhD in large language models" teaching ChatGPT that would "blow me out of the water."

Even though they might not be technically trained in AI, the course instructors who Insider spoke to said their courses are raking in cash.

Junck said his course enrolls between 200 to 250 new students each day the majority of which are based in the US, followed by India, Japan, and Canada. Students from Venezuela, Russia, and parts of the Middle East countries where ChatGPT isn't available have also flocked to the course, he said.

Dean said she's been "pleasantly surprised" by the level of interest in her course. Since launching it in March, she has enrolled more than 3,500 students artists, writers, and game developers, to name a few and has earned $10,000 from the course alone, according to screenshots of her sales dashboard Insider reviewed.

Targeting a niche of creatives and breaking down technical concepts for them in an accessible way could be what drove the demand, Dean said.

More than 600 students have taken Bhatia's course since it launched, according to Skillshare's website. While he declined to share financials, he said he has seen a "significant increase" in sales since he updated his course to include AI.

He credits the demand to writers who are not technically savvy but are looking for ways to make the process of writing and publishing a book easier.

While ChatGPT may be seemingly easy to use, the three course instructors agreed that getting ChatGPT to produce high-quality outputs is a skill that requires practice.

"We still need to be intentional in our data input in order to achieve quality output," Dean said.

Bhatia agreed, saying ChatGPT can "churn out a lot of garbage if you do not really know what to ask."

Despite the occasional "garbage" answers and the meteoric rise of generative AI tools, all three course instructors don't believe they are cashing in on a fleeting trend.

Dean believes the people who have the "patience" and "willingness" to learn how to integrate the tool into their jobs will have a "huge leg up" compared to those who don't.

"The people who take action to build that muscle memory are going to supercharge their productivity if they do it the right way," Dean said.

Many workers have already integrated ChatGPT into their workflows, and its only a matter of time, Bhatia predicts, before the AI is integrated into tools that have been around for awhile. After all, companies like Microsoft have already made plans to add AI assistants into their preexisting tools like Word and Excel.

Dean, Junck, and Bhatia don't expect the demand for their courses to slow down anytime soon. They plan on continuously updating the course with lessons on how to use new AI tools like Google's Bard and Microsoft's new Bing when those are officially launched to the public.

A course "might not make you an AI prompt engineer," Dean said, "But it will help with your creativity and your workflow."

BTS: Taekook Fans Lose Their Minds as Jungkook Gets Shy While Posing With V at Dream Premiere; Watch – News18

BTS singers Kim Taehyung and Jeon Jungkook, best known by their stage names V and Jungkook, made their way to the premiere of the South Korean movie Dream. The film stars Park Seo-joon, one of Taehyungs best friends, and South Korean singer-actress IU. Videos from the screening surfaced online, showing Taekook making their way to the screening together.

For the screening, Taehyung was seen wearing a pair of black pants and a white tee with a brown denim jacket. On the other hand, Kookie kept it casual in a black-and-grey look. The duo posed for the cameras together and greeted fans gathered at the screening.

A few fans noticed that Jungkook appeared shy at the photo op. He was also seen giggling when Taehyung whispered what appears to be a joke during their photo op session.

The premiere was also attended by Taehyung and Park Seo-joons fellow Wooga Squad members Choi Woo-shik, Park Hyun-sik and Peakboy.

Dream sees Park Seo-joon with singer-actress IU. Seo-joon plays the role of a a professional football player-turned-coach while IU is a PD capturing his journey of training the national football team for the Homeless World Cup.
