The new fishbat Splash video details Facebooks news feed change, which is being slowly implemented in the coming weeks. Striga says the change would focus on highlighting visuals. Pictures and link previews would be larger, making it more attractive for brands, she says.
The feed will also feature separate feeds for different kinds of news. Chronological information (including news, friends' status updates, music and brand posts) will all be organized into individual feeds. Another feed labeled Following will display all the pages that a user follows, shuffling the most recent information to the top. Optimizing this feed is crucial for a brands success on Facebook, Striga says. Many fans are not seeing content that isnt being promoted. Basically, if a brand does not pay to promote a specific post, Facebook actually suppresses it.
The video also discusses the evidence sent from NASAs Mars Rover Curiosity. Curiosity became an instant media success after cleverly tweeting images and pun-filled space-related innuendos. On March 12, the rover tweeted about the discovery of evidence of water and key chemicals needed to sustain life on Mars. Soon after, its Twitter follower count skyrocketed to over 1 million. Striga says it shows the importance of being creative with tweets and that brands could learn a lot from Curiositys social media campaign.
The video concludes with a discussion of the election of Pope Francis I. Striga says the social media blackout was lifted only minutes after the new pope was elected. Hes a very humble man that wants to be connected to the people, she says. Hes the first pope from Latin America, whose population has the greatest density of social media users in the world. I think Pope Francis election marks a new beginning for the Vatican. From an Internet marketing companys perspective, it seems likely that he will use social media to his advantage because of his background and his willingness to communicate with the general public.
