Emmanuel Macron vows to avoid ‘the mistake Hillary Clinton made’ – CNN

Labeled an "elitist" by his rival Marine Le Pen, criticized for his first round victory celebrations, and then overshadowed in his home town by the far-right candidate, Macron has spent much of the past week on the back foot.

It's why he's not moving his furniture into the lyse Palace just yet -- instead taking a lesson from the 2016 US election, in which Hillary Clinton suffered a surprise defeat.

"That was almost certainly the mistake Hillary Clinton made," Emmanuel Macron told CNN's Melissa Bell on Thursday.

"I'm absolutely not playing that game. Right from the first day, that hasn't been the way I defended myself or how I fought."

Macron may have won the first round vote and have been endorsed by several of his rivals but the past week has brought new problems for the 39-year-old, who is seeking to become the nation's youngest leader since Napoleon.

First, it was his celebrations after winning the first round -- at an upmarket brasserie in Paris -- which caused consternation. The celebration led many to believe he had already declared himself President. He was accused of being out of touch with the public, playing perfectly into Le Pen's accusation that he remains part of the "elite."

"I am in the middle of employees who resist to wild globalization. I am not with the managers who eat petit fours," Le Pen said, according to BFMTV.

While she received cheers and posed for selfies, Macron faced a far more hostile reception when he entered the factory.

Macron stopped to talk to workers and answer questions while describing Le Pen's visit as a stunt.

And on Thursday, in an interview that aired on French national channel TF1, Macron -- a millionaire investment banker and former government minister -- bristled at the notion he's a candidate for France's elite.

"I am not the candidate for a little group or a kind of nomenclature," he said. " I am going to protect the middle classes and the most vulnerable in France.

"I have a policy for education, for labor. That is what is specific about my project. [It] speaks to the whole of France, the entirety of the country, the towns and the countryside, the farmers and the industrialists, the workers and the entrepreneurs."

He also made a point of differentiating himself from Le Pen, who has rallied supporters with an anti-European Union message.

While Le Pen has advocated taking France out of the EU and closing the country's borders, Macron has called for closer integration.

"I will not be against Berlin. I am with Berlin," he said. "We have differences. We have disagreements, but I will not tell the French today that I am going to defend their interests against Berlin."

"Europe is a construction: Ours. We decided to create Europe. We did it for our peace, for our prosperity, for our liberty."

While most polls have Macron well ahead going into the May 7 runoff he remains cautious.

He rejected accusations that he lacks the experience required for the job and says "there is no ideal age to become President of the Republic."

"Every day since the beginning of the campaign, I have never considered myself as the favorite," he said.

"The lack of experience is due to my age. I do not have the experience of politics but of the government, the private sector and the public service. I think it is important, Ms. Le Pen does not have that experience."

Fifth Amendment won’t save Mautino, Wehrli argues – DuPage Policy Journal

Invoking the Fifth Amendment wont protect Auditor General Frank Mautino from House Joint Resolution 9, Rep. Grant Wehrli (R-Naperville) said after the State Board of Elections hearing on Mautino recently.

Today we heard that his Fifth Amendment rights were invoked in response to a State Board of Elections subpoena, Wehrli told the Edgar County Watchdogs (ECW), a government oversight group. That should tell us everything we need to know about the ethics of Mr. Frank Mautino.

Wehrli said a bill to force Mautinos ouster is currently in the General Assembly.

I think its time for Frank Mautino to resign, he said. House Joint Resolution 9 was filed back in January; it calls for his resignation. It would give him the opportunity to come forward and answer these questions questions that he has had multiple, multiple opportunities to answer, and he simply decides not to.

The scandal surrounding Mautinos campaign contribution spending began in January 2016 after the Illinois Times reported that Mautino had continued to collect campaign donations between his appointment to the auditor general post in October 2015 and assuming the position on Jan. 1, 2016.

The ECW, intrigued by the story and the campaigns explanation that the donations were used to pay for office expenses and close up shop, conducted an investigation of Mautinos campaign spending, reviewing data in his Campaign Disclosure Expenditure List. The group found that the campaign had paid more than $213,000 to one service station for fuel and repairs between March 2005 and December 2015.

The campaign also wrote checks totaling a similar amount to Spring Valley City Bank, which the campaign said was a method to get cash for campaign-related payments, but no receipts for those payments have been provided.

Illinois resident David Cooke submitted a complaint to the State Board of Elections that led to that bodys investigation and the recent hearing. Mautinos campaign contribution spending is also now the subject of a federal investigation.

Despite mounting evidence of suspicious spending, Mautino has not answered questions to ease the concerns of some lawmakers and Illinoisans, culminating in his invoking Fifth Amendment protections at the State Board of Elections hearing. While Mautino has refused to offer explanations, his supporters, including Speaker of the House Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), have maintained that a full review of the case will prove his innocence.

One of the things that Speaker Madigan said was that Frank Mautino would be vindicated once all evidence was out there, and now here today we heard that Frank Mautino invoked his Fifth Amendment [rights] in response to a subpoena, Wehrli said. So, I dont know how were ever going to get to the bottom of this if Frank wont even testify on his own behalf.

The ECW pointed out in its interview with Wehrli, who was accompanied by fellow Mautino critic Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton), that the documents presented in the hearing have been sealed, even though the hearing itself was open.

It once again just makes me question the transparency of all of this, Wehrli said. These records should be public. This was a public hearing in which documents were provided. Those records should absolutely be a matter of public record. Now, as of today [] Im not a lawyer, but they should be.

Wehrli has also pushed for greater transparency in campaign spending through House Bill 0415, which would require copies or images of receipts to be submitted along with expenditure reports. At the hearing, Wehrli and Ives were the only two of the states 118 representatives to have their campaign reporting brought to the table.

You know youre over the target when youre taking flak, Wehrli said. That was a shot right at us [], but its simply a low form of intimidation, and it wont stick. If we can get the speaker to get HB 415 out of Rules and get that as law, then all of this goes away because everything will be out there for all to see.

Erdogan: 'Fresh page' for US relations with Trump

ISTANBUL (AP) Turkey's president says a "fresh page" in Turkish-American relations can be opened with President Donald Trump's administration, as high-level dialogue has intensified since January.

Speaking in Istanbul on Friday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he sees "signs that Mr. Trump will exhibit a more decisive stance than the previous administration in terms of combatting terror."

Erdogan repeated his criticism of the U.S. alliance with Syrian Kurdish militias that Turkey deems "terrorists."

He says that giving the Kurds concrete support "is damaging the spirit of alliance and partnership."

Erdogan adds: "Now Turkey, the Free Syrian Army, along with the coalition led by America, can clear these 2,500-5,000 terrorists. It's not difficult for us and we would succeed."

Erdogan and Trump are scheduled to meet in Washington on May 16.

Erdogan opponents being monitored in Denmark The Post – The Copenhagen Post – Danish news in english

According to a letter sent from the Turkish Embassy in Denmark to the Turkish government, opponents ofthe Erdogan regime living in Denmark are being monitored.

The letter, which the Danish newspaper Kristeligt Dagblad has come into possession of, has been confirmed by Adnan Blent Baloglu, the embassys religious adviser.

According to the letter, the embassy has collected information onfour men and 14 schools in Denmark believed to be supporter of the Glen movement led by Turkish preacher Fethullah Glen, who lives in the US and was blamed by the Erdogan regime for instigating the coup attempt in Turkey last year.

This gathering of information is a state reflex in the aftermath ofthe terrible coup attempt that led to people being brutally killed. If these people are among us, we have to know about it, Baloglu told Kristeligt Dagblad.

Baloglu doesnt see that the Turkish Embassys information-gathering exercise is a problem.

Have any of these people been hurt after the information was gathered? We will ensure thatany provocation in our mosques is prevented.

DF: Expel him As religious adviser to the Turkish Embassy in Denmark, Baloglu is responsible for Turkish religious issues in Denmark and advises the 29 Turkish imams deployed to Denmark by the Turkish state.

The news has several politicians calling for action to be taken. Kenneth Kristensen Berth, the spokesperson for Dansk Folkeparti (DF) regarding EU issues, wants Baloglu kicked out of Denmark.

Im deeply shaken that a Turkish diplomat displays such contempt for Danish law, Berth told DR Nyheder.

Its completely unacceptable and if its true, I cant see any other course of action other than expelling him from Denmark.

The news comes on the heels of60.4 percent of the Turks in Denmark voting togive Erdogan permission to change the countrys constitution and gain more power from 2019 onwards.

And in late March, the Foreign Ministry summoned Turkeys charg daffaires in Denmark following allegations that a number of Danes with Turkish roots fear being blacklisted by the Turkish authorities for speaking out against Erdogan.

Ahead of the upcoming visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to India, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades on Thursday asked India to tell Turkey that the status quo on the territorial dispute on his island is unacceptable.

"We look to friends and allies such as India to convey the message to Turkey that the status quo is unacceptable, and that it needs to engage constructively and actively in the efforts underway," he said while delivering a keynote address at India Trilateral Forum organised by Observer Research Foundation on the 'EU-India strategic partnership in the 21st century: a Cyprus perspective'.

"India has been a long-standing, reliable ally in our efforts to reunify Cyprus and its people through a comprehensive settlement," he said.

The northern part of the Mediterranean island country is under Turkish occupation in 1974.

"Peace in Cyprus will send a strong message to our fragile region and beyond, and will be to the benefit not only of Cyprus and its people, but also to Turkey, the EU, and the region," he added.

ERDOGAN'S INDIA VISIT

Erdogan will arrive here on April 30 on a two-day state visit to India.

Terming India and the EU "natural partners" and their strong economic links, Anastasiades said their relationship is well beyond its infancy and it is "now our task to see this relationship into full maturity."

On the security challenges faced by both India and EU, he said: "Cyprus, and indeed the EU, stand with India as staunch supporters of a comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.

"Like India, we are fully aware of the fact that terrorist networks are global and require a unified response," he said.

"In places like Afghanistan, India and the EU can forge closer cooperation for the benefit of the people of Afghanistan and for the cause of peace and stability in the region."

Supporting the Free Trade agreement between India and EU, Anastasiades said it "will provide the space for EU Member States to maximise their bilateral engagement with India, in all possible sectors of economic activity."

"FTA will help Cyprus seize the opportunity to engage actively with India in sectors like renewable energy, most notably in solar energy and natural gas, in shipping and financial services," he said, welcoming Indian firms to explore business opportunities in Cyprus.

Anastasiades is paying India a state visit from April 25 to 29.

On April 28, he will be accorded ceremonial welcome and will participate in delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
