HUNDREDS of thousands of Australians have turned to social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to get immediate responses and information from their bank.

The Commonwealth Bank is among many of the nation's financial institutions using social media to their advantage, with more than 225,000 "likes'' on Facebook and thousands more followers on Twitter.

Digital and social marketing general manager Andrew Murrell said the bank would introduce 24-hour round-the clock monitoring of social networking sites within months to keep up with the rising number of customers using this avenue to communicate with their bank.

"As the scale of the followers are growing particularly on Facebook we have worked with our direct banking to have customer service available like you do from the telephone,'' he said.

"At the moment that's 7am to 10pm but we will be looking to go 24/7 before the year's out.''

"We have two Facebook pages, three Twitter channels, two YouTube channels and a blog as well, so it's continually growing,'' he said.

``A lot of people are searching out information on companies, we use social media channels to put out and talk about ourselves and the expertise of who we are as a company and what we do in the community.

"They are also playing a vital role these days with issues management, such as when NetBank goes down.''

Philip Maddocks: Democrats vote to replace the word ‘God’ with ‘Bill Clinton’

Reacting to the chorus of praise for the convention speech delivered by Bill Clinton, Democrats hastily voted to change their party platform for a second time in less than a week, replacing the word God with the words Bill Clinton.

Moments after convention chairman Antonio Villaraigosa formally gaveled in the change, Democratic lawmakers burst into cheer - with some even pushing to name Hope, Ark., the birthplace of Mr. Clinton, as the capital of Israel.

Mr. Villaraigosa called the vote three times, allowing him and his fellow Democrats to linger a little longer in the afterglow of contentment Mr. Clintons convention performance had delivered.

And when Mr. Villaraigosa finally announced, the ays have it, boisterous chants of Bill, Bill, Bill erupted from the gathering of Democrats, who had convened in front of the Jefferson Memorial for the occasion, their numbers spilling across the south bank of the Tidal Basin and into downtown Washington, D.C.

A campaign official for President Barack Obama said the commander in chief had personally requested that the words Bill Clinton be put into the platform after Mr. Clintons rousing defense of Mr. Obama. Why didnt they change that sooner? the president said, according to the official, when he heard that Gods name had been removed to make room for Mr. Clintons.

Mr. Obama said he remains a devout Christian and that his faith is an integral part of his daily life, but that no one, not me, not God, could make a better case for my first term than Bill Clinton.

The change came as Democrats spent the days following Mr. Clintons convention speech fretting over whether they were missing a political opportunity by playing it safe and hitching their platform to God when going all in with Mr. Clinton was the smarter play for carrying Ohio in November.

The chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, said in a statement that the change was made to maintain consistency with the personal views expressed by the president, the Democratic Party, and even God himself following Bill Clintons speech last week.

A senior administration official emphasized that the president had intervened to bring the platform in line with his own vision. The president expressed his view after the speech, and it hasnt changed, the official said. Last week proved that there is no one including any deity who has as much import in the daily lives of Democrats than Bill Clinton. And that plank of the platform has not changed since last week.

Robert Gibbs, an adviser to the Obama campaign, sought to downplay the notion that Democrats were forsaking their spiritual well-being simply for a bump in the polls by substituting the words Bill Clinton for God in the platform.

Everton boss Moyes has word with Fellaini concerning press comments

Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini returned from international duty with Belgium to find the boss David Moyes waiting to have a word with him about comments he made whilst away.

The 24-year-old told journalists from his homeland: "This will be one of my last seasons. I have seen everything. In January, or at the end of the season, I will look for another club or league."

Moyes felt Fellaini had been naive but insisted the matter was now closed.

"I think sometimes the players, when they go away on international duty, have their egos massaged and things are said when they maybe think they are talking to a different audience," he said.

"They think maybe they can say things which don't matter - well, it does matter and I've made Marouane aware of that.

"The transfer window shut a while ago so it doesn't really matter.

"These things happen, I've had a word with him and we move on."

Back Story: Orwellian-speak

There is no censorship in Ukraine. Ukraine has an open society.

The economy of Ukraine is stable and will continue to be so as long as this administration is in power or until the end of time, whichever comes first.

There is absolutely no corruption at the highest echelon of Ukrainian government. The existence of high-level corruption is a myth.

If you believe those statements to be true, I have hectares of prime farmland in the Chornobyl dead zone to sell you. In the administrations Orwellian-speak, black is white and white is chartreuse.

In fact, the official pronouncements often make the famous Twilight Zone seem as normal as Sunday morning pancakes and kefir. The truth is out there, perhaps hidden in a far-off black hole, but there. The sad thing is that at times the administration seems so earnest in its feel-good proclamations that one would think they actually believe it themselves.

It reminds me of some Ukrainian advertising contests, where the agency that bought first place convinces itself it won first place. Otherwise, why would they have been handed the gold-plated statuette?

I think this whole very translucent spin game is a remnant of the Soviet era. I was once in a meeting with the late Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko in Moscow in which he earnestly proclaimed interest in a nuclear arms limitation treaty (SALT II). He was passionate about it.

Four months later, the USSR invaded Afghanistan, thereby ensuring that the treaty, negotiated by several administrations, would not even be brought up in the U.S. Senate.

What sparked this discourse was the silent protest at the World Newspaper Congress in Kyiv recently where some 16 editors and journalists held signs reading: Stop Censorship and Media Oligarchs Serve the Authorities during President Viktor Yanukovychs address.

The irony is that as the president boasted about Ukraines open society and asserted that it was free of censorship, his security guards were trying to take away the protest signs, knocking around a couple of journalists in the process.
