Is SEO a science,Yes, says Mike Baxter, Lead Consultant on Econsultancy's Digital Certificate in Search Engine Optimisation

Econsultancy recently launched the UK's first university accreditedDigital Certificates, which focus on strengthening digital marketing skills for those looking to begin or develop their careers in this industry.

Here, Mike discusses the value of the certifcates, and explains why SEO is a science, not an art...

Okay, that's a deceptively simple question with some big issues underlying it.Let's start by exploring just what SEO is and how, in an ideal world, we should approach training and professional development for new SEO practitioners.

Firstly, there IS a science of SEO,we have a systematic understanding of how search engines work and what changes to websites and the links between them tend to increase and decrease organic search engine performance.

Is our scientific understanding of SEO incomplete? Of course it is! Our scientific understanding of physics is incomplete but nobody ever suggests we shouldn't teach, or offer qualifications in physics because of it.

The science of SEO is, however, complex. Far too complex for the application of a few rules to guarantee success.

‘Inbetweeners’ will not return, says James Buckley

The Inbetweeners star James Buckley has stated that the E4 series is unlikely to return.

Buckley - who played Jay Cartwright in the sitcom - was recently reported to have hinted about a fourth series being planned, which would include a major character death.

However, co-creator Iain Morris later denied the rumours, calling them "total b*llocks".

Buckley reiterated that the reports were unfounded, telling NME: "I've not been spoken to about it at all. I've had interviews in the paper just completely made up.

"I've not spoken to anyone for six months. There was an interview in the Daily Star where I was quoted saying we were going to do a fourth series and one of the characters was going to die, which wasn't true."

He added: "There are no plans to do any more, unfortunately. I think that will be the last you see of The Inbetweeners."

The cast was last seen together in the big-screen Inbetweeners Movie, which was released in August 2011.

James Buckley became engaged to his girlfriend Clair Meek earlier this year.

Monarch, the leading scheduled leisure airline, has to date operated flights to Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, Gibraltar, Greece, Italy, Portugal Spain and Turkey from Birmingham, London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester airports. In addition to year-round low fares, Monarch also offers a bespoke "build your own class of travel" range of products and services both on the ground and inflight. The two new Air Packs are offered alongside the airline's traditional "build your own class" product and are designed to give customers full visibility on price from the beginning of the booking process. Customers are able to choose between two Monarch Air Packs: an Essentials Pack and a Premium Pack, combining extras such as allocated seating, hold baggage and access to online check-in.

Customers can also take advantage of MFlex, which provides improved flexibility for customers when booking flights on Monarch's scheduled network of flights. Charged at only 2.50 per person, per flight, the new MFlex product must be added at the time of booking. Once added, the customer is free to make one change to their booking up to 15 days prior to departure, which includes a date change or a route change, without incurring an administration fee*. What's more, if a customer selects MFlex when booking, but makes no subsequent changes to their booking, Monarch will refund them the value of MFlex in the form of a credit voucher, which can be used as part payment towards a future scheduled flight with Monarch.

Europe votes to cap data roaming prices, will make it cheaper to tweet from Ibiza

European Union countries already had a data roaming cutoff law in place to prevent bill shock after your next Balearic vacation, but the price of the data in question should get much cheaper very soon. The European Parliament has just voted 578 to 10 to cap the price customers pay at no more than 70 Euro cents (91 US cents) per megabyte starting from July 1st, with that price eventually dipping to 45 Euro cents (58c US) a year later and just 20 Euro cents (26 US cents) in 2014. Voice and text price caps are going down to as little as 19 and nine Euro cents (25 and 12 cents US) in that two-year span, and if you're visiting from outside the EU, you'll be glad to hear that the anti-bill shock rule will apply to you this year as well. So, while you still might want to avoid uploading large videos from your phone while in Spain, you'll at least have the option of checking in on Foursquare without having to take out a small mortgage.

SEPTENI HOLDINGS Sees Strong First Half Results on Strong Sales of Internet Advertising, Social Games

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

SEPTENI HOLDNGS (JASDAQ:4293), a leading Japanese Internet advertising and related services company, recorded strong earnings during the first half results of fiscal year September 2012 on the back of strong sales growth in social games within the Media Contents Business and favorable demand for Internet Marketing Business. Consequently sales, and operating and ordinary incomes rose by 15.3%, 48.1% and 65.2% year-over-year respectively. At the same time extraordinary losses arising from impairment of goodwill caused net income to fall by 8.0% year-over-year.

(Million yen, yen per share)

SEPTENI redefined its consolidated business segments and now reports only two business segments, Internet Marketing and Media Contents Businesses. Expansion of the Internet advertising market continued and firm demand for advertising related to smartphones and marketing solutions for SNS services such as "Facebook" allowed Internet Marketing Business sales and operating income to rise by 7.9% and 14.5% year-over-year to JPY16.6 billion and JPY692 million respectively during the first half. At the same time, the merger of two subsidiaries and strong popularity of newly launched social games contributed to large increases in both sales and operating income of 216.9% and 22 times year-over-year to JPY2.15 billion and JPY216 million respectively in the Media Contents Business.

Total assets increased by JPY12.18 billion from the end of the previous fiscal year to JPY14.21 billion at the end of the first half. Factors influencing this increase were declines in cash and equivalents and marketable securities of JPY696 and JPY320 million respectively, which were offset by an increase in receivables of JPY1.41 billion. Increases in payables and long term debt contributed to an increase in total liabilities of JPY1.52 billion from the end of the previous fiscal year to JPY7.36 billion at the end of the first half. Consequently net assets rose by JPY502 million to JPY6.84 billion over the same period.

Due to rapid changes within the Internet market and subsequent difficulty in estimating earnings, SEPTENI has chosen to announce estimates for only the quarter immediately following the term for which actual results have been announced. Therefore estimates for only the third quarter of current fiscal year have been released, which call for 18.5% and 72.9% year-over-year growth in sales and operating income to JPY30.71 and JPY1.10 billion respectively.

(Million yen)

SEPTENI HOLDINGS consists of a group of companies conducting various unique businesses in their respective specialized fields including technology and media content, with a central focus upon the Internet advertising agency business. The SEPTENI Group also provides comprehensive e-marketing support services through cooperation and collaboration with all of its group companies.
