Win for Onchan in Isle of Man Bank primary schools football contest

by Colin Brown

Onchan won the annual Douglas and District Primary Schools Football Tournament sponsored by Isle of Man Bank - in brilliant sunshine at The Bowl, defeating Fairfield in a very close final.

Onchan and Fairfield had proved themselves the two strongest teams on view winning their respective groups without losing a match Onchan dropping only one point in six games while Fairfield won all five of their matches. They were joined in the semi-finals by Ballacottier and Anagh Coar, both of whom had finished second in their sections on goal difference, just edging out Laxey and last years winners Cronk-y-Berry.

The semi-finals saw Onchan putting four goals past Anagh Coar without reply while Fairfield also kept a clean sheet in beating Ballacottier 2-0.

Onchan raced into a two-goal lead in the final and seemed to be heading for a comfortable victory before Fairfield pulled a goal back near the end which resulted in one or two anxious moments in the Onchan goalmouth before the final whistle blew. Ballacottier defeated Anagh Coar 5-0 in the play-off for third and fourth positions.

Tournament organiser, Jo Richardson, thanked everyone who had helped make the day such a success and referred to the continued involvement of Isle of Man Bank which had sponsored the event since its inception 17 years previously. She introduced Shaun Gritton, manager of the Banks Port Erin branch who presented medals to the finalists and the tournament shield to the winning Onchan team.

Onchans squad consisted of Luke Phair, Syd Batty, Lewis Bridson, Charlie Yau, Tommasz Boruch, Joseph Barker, Tyler Dycher, Ethan Leivers and Aaron Babb. A total of 13 teams took part in the tournament which was played, for the first time, on the new all-weather pitch at The Bowl.

Isle of Man Bank continues Crimestoppers sponsorship

by Charles Horton

Isle of Man Bank is continuing to sponsor the Islands branch of the Crimestoppers charity.

Isle of Man Crimestoppers is part of the UK Crimestoppers 'family' and is an independent Manx charity dedicated to fighting crime across the Island. It focuses on local issues that are important to the community - improving crime detection and thereby enhancing quality of life on the Island.

Isle of Man Crimestoppers also announced that Craig Wolstencroft, Managing Director of marketing and PR firm Mainstream Financial, has joined its committee. He is also supporting Crimestoppers by Mainstream Financial providing PR and marketing services to promote the charity.

Stuart McCudden, Chair of Isle of Man Crimestoppers, thanked Isle of Man Bank for its donation and added:

We are fortunate that the Island has a low crime rate, but we must never become complacent about how much harm crime can do to those who are victims. Generous donations such as those from Isle of Man Bank are vital if we are to continue our work. I would also like to welcome Craig Wolstencroft to our committee, his PR and marketing expertise will be a great asset as we seek to promote Isle of Man Crimestoppers in the months and years ahead.

Paul Smith, Isle of Man Bank Board member, commented:

Isle of Man Bank is proud to continue its support of the excellent work being carried out by Isle of Man Crimestoppers. Statistics have shown our support is playing a major role in the fight against crime and promotes the aims of Crimestoppers throughout the Island. All calls to 0800 555111 are answered by Crimestoppers staff and only the relevant details relating to the crime are passed to the appropriate law enforcement agency. We believe our support of Crimestoppers helps get this message across.

Isle of Man Crimestoppers promotes the 0800 555111 hotline and the http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org website which are both anonymous methods which can be used to pass on information about crime. All calls are handled by the UK Crimestoppers Call Centre, so Manx callers can therefore be assured of their complete anonymity and information given online is also untraceable. The charity also promotes the Fearless website - http://www.fearless.org - aimed at encouraging more young people to help in the fight against crime.
