Bebo founders buy website back for US$849m less than sale price

LONDON: The British couple who sold social networking site Bebo for $850 million (655 million euros) five years ago have bought back the company for just $1 million, and say they will relaunch it.

Michael Birch and his wife Xochi launched Bebo in 2005 after meeting at university in London and the site became the destination of choice for teenagers to chat and share pictures, attracting 40 million users by 2008.

But as Facebook and Twitter began their rapid rise, Bebo fell out of fashion and by the time it was sold to AOL, analysts were warning that it was vastly overpriced.

AOL sold it on to investment fund Criterion Capital Partners in 2010 for a sum reported to be as low as $10 million.

After buying back the now-bankrupt company, Michael Birch tweeted: "We just bought Bebo back for $1 million. Can we actually re-invent it? Who knows, but it will be fun trying."

The Birchs' own high-tech development team, Monkey Inferno, will try to "breathe new life" into Bebo from offices in San Francisco, where the couple live with their three children, a statement said.

Monkey Inferno's CEO Shaan Puri said: "We're excited about the ambitious challenge of bringing Bebo back, and couldn't be happier to announce that the product will be back in the hands of the founders."

"We know the odds are stacked against us, but we love challenges and the Bebo users deserve better than what they have received the past few years."

Other social networking sites have been forced to relaunch as their influence has faded. MySpace has been redesigned, as has social news site Digg.

Michael and Xonchi Birch have not been sitting back and enjoying their riches -- they are in the process of developing a private members' club in San Francisco, based on similar clubs in London such as Soho House.

Kashmiri teen develops Facebook-like site

Meet the Mark Zuckerberg of Kashmir. Asif Showkat Wani, 17, has developed the first social networking site about Kashmir and for Kashmirs. http://www.livekashmir.in has more features than any other social networking site and that too with a Kashmiri flavor.

Asif, a class XI student of Srinagar, has used 60% his own codes and 40% open source paid codes to develop the site. He has included features like music, online free ad services, etc in the site which makes it multi-task portal for Kashmiris globally.

It is not just social network portal. There are features like music store where Kashmiri music is available. You can also post free ads on the site to sell your products. We have included a section called forum where you can discuss all issues other than political. We have blogs about various places in Kashmir, Asif told dna.

The site was launched just three days ago and so far 1,600 people have registered. Basically it is for Kashmiris living worldwide. Only if you are a Kashmiri, you are registered as a member. If you are not, you will be registered but your profile will show you as guest, said Asif.

Son of a government employee, Asif is the first generation techie in his family. I started in class VI in programming field. Some people later advised me to read programming. It did not click because there were no facilities available. I went for coaching but could not take it up because they said I was too young for all this. Two years later I was lucky to undertake three months course and that was it, he said.

This did not deter the young man to live his dreams. He started reading on his own and pursued online courses to gain knowledge. I was lucky that family backed me. I got good books. I did online courses and started studying. And then decided to make the website, he said.

Asif is now launching mobile app for his site so that the people can access Livekashmir on their cell phones. It will be in next couple of days for the people using android cell phones, he said.

Twitter To Show Users Tailor-Made Adverts

The social networking site says it will be experimenting with a way to make adverts on Twitter more useful.

It plans to display promoted content from brands and businesses a user has shown interest in.

According to a post on its blog, the company - which allows people to send public messages of up to 140 characters - said: "Users won't see more ads on Twitter, but they may see better ones".

It said the move - which technology experts say will bring Twitter in line with other social networking sites that tailor adverts - will be trialled in the US"soon".

A spokesman said: "The ad pilot is US-only and we don't have a timescale for roll-out more widely."

Twitter will tailor adverts to the individual user's browsing information - although their personal email addresses will be unreadable, Twitter said.

It also confirmed it will not receive browser-related information from its ad partners for tailoring adverts if users have DNT (Do Not Track) technology enabled.
