Kashmiri teen develops Facebook-like site

Meet the Mark Zuckerberg of Kashmir. Asif Showkat Wani, 17, has developed the first social networking site about Kashmir and for Kashmirs. http://www.livekashmir.in has more features than any other social networking site and that too with a Kashmiri flavor.

Asif, a class XI student of Srinagar, has used 60% his own codes and 40% open source paid codes to develop the site. He has included features like music, online free ad services, etc in the site which makes it multi-task portal for Kashmiris globally.

It is not just social network portal. There are features like music store where Kashmiri music is available. You can also post free ads on the site to sell your products. We have included a section called forum where you can discuss all issues other than political. We have blogs about various places in Kashmir, Asif told dna.

The site was launched just three days ago and so far 1,600 people have registered. Basically it is for Kashmiris living worldwide. Only if you are a Kashmiri, you are registered as a member. If you are not, you will be registered but your profile will show you as guest, said Asif.

Son of a government employee, Asif is the first generation techie in his family. I started in class VI in programming field. Some people later advised me to read programming. It did not click because there were no facilities available. I went for coaching but could not take it up because they said I was too young for all this. Two years later I was lucky to undertake three months course and that was it, he said.

This did not deter the young man to live his dreams. He started reading on his own and pursued online courses to gain knowledge. I was lucky that family backed me. I got good books. I did online courses and started studying. And then decided to make the website, he said.

Asif is now launching mobile app for his site so that the people can access Livekashmir on their cell phones. It will be in next couple of days for the people using android cell phones, he said.
