Berners-Lee: Insidious government surveillance may be worse than outright censorship

The insidious nature of government spying has a chilling and subtle effect on Web freedoms that could ultimately be more damaging to society than outright censorship, World Wide Web creator Tim Berners-Lee told the audience at the launch of theWorld Wide Web Foundation's 2013 Web Index findings.

The legacy of the revelations made bywhistleblower Edward Snowdeninto theactions of national security agencies (the NSA, GCHQ, and others)will be long-lasting, intimated Berners-Lee. While nations such as China openly engage in censorship, what the US and the UK have done could potentially leave a trail of paranoia that in turn leads to a trend for self-censorship among citizens of the allegedly "free" West.

"The question of 'who is it that's got the off switch for our connectivity' started to be asked because of Egypt," said Berners-Lee. "It's a rather obvious thing you can see happening, and a country that does that doesn't get very far. Turning off the Internet got the youths onto the streets because that's what they had left to do. So blocking of the Internet is kind of obvious. And censorship in places like China is obvious too when it comes to blocking whole websites. It's hard to pretend it doesn't exist when the rest of the Web has links to those websites.

"But spying is this insidious form, because of its chilling effect if you feel someone's looking over your shoulder, there's all kinds of things you will not do [You're not going to be] able to use facilities because of nameless fear."

This year's Web Index was finished in September, so Berners-Lee suggests some countries may have ranked even lower considering therevelations of the past few months. The US and the UK predictably fell a few spots down the table on the sub-index Freedom and Openness. Though the UK came out third overall, one spot ahead of the US, it came 24th for Freedom and Openness. It came eighth for Universal Access, first for Relevant Content, and third for Empowerment.

It shows the contradiction that can exist between the public's perceived freedoms online, and the government's control of those freedoms. For instance, while the US is first for Empowermentdefined as "how far the Web is empowering people not just to receive information, but to voice their own views, participate in public affairs, and take action to improve their lives"it came 27th for Freedom and Openness. Citizen empowerment and public engagement is concealing the darker underbelly of wider-spread abuses of personal privacy. "Provisions against cybercrime, terrorism, or blasphemy are frequently being employed to silence legitimate dissent or justify blanket digital surveillance," explains the report.

Anonymity is a key area where the state's agenda directly clashes with concepts of freedom, suggested Berners-Lee, and it will be a complex issue to solve.

"Some things are good, like the openness of government data, and some things are just bad. But anonymity is one where it's not so simple. NGOs that work under oppressive regimes and are in contact with the underground campaign for it. Then we have people dealing with cyber bullying where clearly if someone's saying nasty, mean untrue things about you then you can reveal who they are."

In any situation where users say they need a secondary identity, Berners-Lee says we need "a whole social system and machinery" around that service to protect others. Communities need to be self-monitoring so that anonymity can legitimately exist where necessaryas with whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Airtel gives voice to social networking sites

Social networking is driving a plethora of innovations in the industry. Most of the value added services and innovations in the handset models have been driven by the growing interest of youth and people in the social netwoking space.

Post 3G and BWA auctions, the Indian telecom market is on the threshold of a more mature stage, and the road ahead looks even more promising. Development in all the sectors of ICT industry has heated up the competition in the region. Operators are seeking new sources of growth to capitalize on their share of the market and Bharti Airtel has added one more chapter to it by introducing Airtel voice blog.

Bharti Airtel has added voice to the social networking by unveiling Airtel Blog. It is reportedly the world's first voice blogging service.

India's leading operators' innovation has already been tested by nearly two million users. This has brought social networking on voice to its mobile customers. Archiving and sharing of voice messages among companions, members, followers is one of the biggest charms among the mobile customers.

Premium Mathematica software free on budget Raspberry Pi

Wolfram Research is giving away its Mathematica software for use on the diminutive, $25 Raspberry Pi computers -- and debuting a brand-new programming language.

Wolfram Research's Mathematica is available for free on Raspberry Pi machines.

Not since Steve Jobs' Next computers did Wolfram Research offer Mathematica, its premium mathematics, processing, and analysis software, for free.

The Next was an expensive, higher-end workstation. This time around, Wolfram is giving away Mathematica for computers at the opposite end of the spectrum: the diminutive, $25 Raspberry Pi.

It's a nice horse to hitch your cart to. Two million Raspberry Pi machines have been sold so far, and they're popular in the educational circles that Wolfram also targets.

Wolfram Research founder and Chief Executive Stephen Wolfram said Thursday that Mathematica is now available for Raspberry Pi computers and will ship with future models. In addition, the company also is including the first public prototype version of a new product, Wolfram Language.

"I'm a great believer in the importance of programming as a central component of education. And I'm excited that with the Wolfram Language I think we finally have a powerful programming language worthy of the next generation," Wolfram said. "We've got a language that's not mostly concerned with the details of computers, but is instead about being able to understand and create things on the basis of huge amounts of built-in computational ability and knowledge."

Those grand aspirations, to be sure, but they're nothing compared to how Wolfram introduced the Wolfram Language last week: "If we're forming a kind of global brain with all our interconnected computers and devices, then the Wolfram Language is the natural language for it."

Raspberry Pi machines -- naked circuit boards that run a version of Linux from an SD Card -- are geared for the hardware hacker crowd that's bubbling up in high-tech circles. They are of course not very powerful: Wolfram warns that Mathematica's graphical interface can be "sluggish." But the command-line interface is snappy, he said, and the machine is still vastly faster than those on which Mathematica got its start 25 years.

Mathematica is ordinarily expensive -- even the home version costs more than 10 times a Raspberry Pi, and the professional version is something like two orders of magnitude more costly than the tiny computer. But giving it away could make sense: Comparatively feeble Raspberry Pi machines are hardly likely to cut into sales of Mathematica on the workstations and laptops that paying customers use. And exposing students to new software and programming tools is a time-honored strategy to cultivate the next generation of customers.

PRESS RELEASE: INDUS reports strong third quarter

DGAP-News: INDUS Holding AG / Key word(s): Quarter Results INDUS reports strong third quarter

21.11.2013 / 08:00

=--------------------------------------------------------------------

INDUS reports strong third quarter

- Results for Q3: Sales revenues EUR 314.3 million, EBIT EUR 32.3 million, EBIT margin 10.3%

- Positive performance expected to continue in 2014

Bergisch Gladbach, 21 November 2013 - The business of INDUS Holding AG improved from quarter to quarter in 2013. Consolidated sales revenues increased to EUR 887.1 million at the nine-month stage (Q1-Q3 2012: EUR 830.0 million). INDUS generated EBIT of EUR 85.3 million (Q1-Q3 2012: EUR 81.2 million) and an EBIT margin of 9.6% (Q1-Q3 2012: 9.8%). At EUR 43.5 million, net income for the period clearly exceeded the prior year level (Q1-Q3 2012: EUR 37.9 million).

INDUS grows as announced at the beginning of the year

Sales revenues of the INDUS Group have grown by approx. 7% in the year to date. This growth is attributable both to the partial consolidation of the six new acquisitions and to additional organic growth. The strongest growth was reported in the Mechanical Engineering segment, where the two largest new additions, BUDDE and ELTHERM, were consolidated for the first time. Due to depreciation effects from the first-time consolidation, the operating results of these companies are included in the segment results only to a limited extend. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of the Mechanical Engineering segment nevertheless increased by 20%. The Vehicle Engineering segment also showed an above-average performance, with sales revenues growing by 6% and earnings up by approx. 40%, which reflects the profit-enhancing measures announced at the beginning of the year. The Medical Engineering segment performed reliably and generated a strong margin. The Construction/Infrastructure segment reported particularly strong growth in the third quarter, thus offsetting the weakness of the beginning of the year. As a result, sales revenues and earnings of this segment reached the prior year level at the nine-month stage. Metal Engineering showed a similar performance, whose sales revenues increased by approx. 2%; due to minor one-time effects and price pressure, the segment's margin declined moderately, however.
