Ibiza has a reputation as a party island, but there is much more to this popular destination than just its excellent nightclubs. The island is the closest of all the Balearic islands to mainland Spain and has a 200 km / 125 mile coastline, with many small coves and over 50 stunning beaches. Ibiza Town (Eivissa) is the proud island capital and resides on the south-easterly coast, where it enjoys a protected harbourside setting.

Eivissa has grown to become an enchanting tourism resort close to the Platja de Figueretes beachfront and has become a focal spot for nightlife in Ibiza, and also offers a useful Tourist Information Centre on the Passeig des Moll. Nearby, the Passeig de Vara de Rey is an especially scenic promenade and a good place for sunset views.

Hotels on the island range from convenient Ibiza budget lodging to luxury accommodation, both on the seafront and inland. Finding resort accommodation can be difficult, especially during the peak tourist season (July to August) and therefore booking Ibiza holidays ahead is advisable and virtually compulsory in high season. Do always bear in mind that hotel discounts may be available for advance bookings. The other popular alternative for accommodation on the island is to rent a private holiday villa for your stay. Villas range from pleasant and homely to sheer luxury, and for larger groups this is often a cheaper option. Ibiza Town is one of the best preserved medieval towns in the whole of Europe and is the largest and most beautiful town on the island, being home to a stunning Spanish cathedral and many fabulous restaurants and chic bars. Nearby there are also countless old stone cottages on the island's hilly countryside and walking in this area is popular.

Ibiza or Eivissa (the official name) is one of the Balearic Islands. The maximum length of the island by highway is 42 km.

Ibiza and Formentera are also known as the "Islas Pitiusas" (from the Greek word "pitys" meaning pine tree) because of the abundance of pines that cover their landscapes. Ibiza and Formentera are home to about 111,200 inhabitants.

Though Balearic Catalan (simply "Catalan" in the Autonomy Statute) is the official language of the Balearic Islands, and all sign posts etc. are in Catalan, Castilian (Spanish) is the main language of the island, with most natives speaking either English or German. English is very widely understood throughout the island, and you can get by with just a basic knowledge of Spanish if you wish to make a slight effort

Rentals - require extra driving care, as the locals are terrible drivers. Many tourists have been run off the road trying to avoid deadly head-on collisions. New road construction has led to the temporary development of detour roads which are poorly marked and dangerous. During the summer months many tourist drivers under the influence of alcohol, pose a potential threat.

Car hire - Renting a car on Ibiza is easy aslong as you can show your driving license. During the summer months of July and August renting a car can be difficult due to high demand, best to book early. Car hire prices are highly competitive. Ibiza Car hire[23]

Taxis - can be used to get around the island and cost 20-30 to travel between cities. NOTE: Don't use the fixed-prices taxis right after you leave the aiport. Instead queue to use one of the licensed taxis - prices will be around 50% lower.
