Central Lee looks at social networking

DONNELLSON Central Lee may be moving into social networking, as was discussed by the school board at its regular meeting Monday night.

Teachers have approached Superintendent John Henriksen to open communications with Facebook and Twitter accounts. Henriksen explained that he did not use social media himself, so when he was approached, he contacted someone more experienced with school-wide social media sites.

The idea is not a new one, with many schools taking to social media to promote events and honor students, and provide weekly or monthly calendars. According to Henriksen, the Facebook and Twitter pages would be monitored by one person, who would post on behalf of the schools. The specifics of the school districts social media pages still need to be discussed.

We are still looking at internal policies to facilitate such a page, Henrikson told the board. The decision will be made at a later meeting.

Social networking websites are becoming increasingly popular. In any setting, the risks of inappropriate use of such a page are present. Henrikson presented a policy to the board that would limit the amount of communication between Central Lee staff and students.

Central Lee already has a policy in place that addresses reasonable professional communication between students and staff. The new policy would be more specific toward social media sites, and would address the staff friending or following students from their personal accounts.

Kim Miller raised her concerns about what would be considered appropriate connections.

With a smaller district like ours, there are more opportunities for relationships outside of school, such as church, she said, adding that different social media users would have different definitions of appropriate connections. Henrikson acknowledged the subjective nature of the policy, and the motion was tabled for further clarification.

Despite not having a social media site just yet, Central Lee is by no means lagging in electronic teaching methods. The school district is one of a few in the state with one-to-one computer capabilities, which made it a candidate for electronic testing. Some of this years Iowa Tests of Educational Development were taken on computers.

Curriculum Director Heather Fuger surveyed freshmen on the experience, and presented the board with the positive response. She said that the tools provided address major issues with test-taking in the past. For example, a student taking a test out of a book could not highlight or make any marks in the booklet. The electronic test was complete with a highlighter and the ability gray out answers at the students request.

Cancer, number one killer disease in Nigeria – Olaleye

The Chief Executive Officer of the Optimal Cancer Care Foundation, Dr. Femi Olaleye, has said that cancer kills more Nigerians each year than any other ailment.

Describing cancer as a serious threat to health in the country, Olaleye urged Nigerians, especially women, to protect themselves from the disease by undergoing regular medical screening.

Everybody is at risk of having one cancer or the other, but some people face greater risks than others. Regular cancer screening is good service for every Nigerian. It will give you the necessary information about your health, he said.

Olaleye said this on Wednesday during a lecture at the 2013 retirement and awards ceremony of the Women in Technical Education and Employment, Yaba College of Technology chapter, in Lagos.

The doctor, whose foundation aims at screening 10,000 women for cancer in Lagos alone, warned that early sexual intercourse among women might lead to infection with the Human Papilloma Virus, causer of cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is the number one killer of women in Nigeria at present. It is the major factor that causes death during childbirth. In fact, for every woman killed by breast cancer, two others die of cervical cancer, he said.

Olaleye noted that a timely detection of cancerous tissues through screening and vaccination of female children, which should begin from age 10, could help prevent full-blown cervical and breast cancer.

He advised the women to minimise the risk of breast cancer by practising constant self-examination.

Breast cancer begins as a tiny lump and it grows with time until death occurs. The best way to prevent this or reduce deaths caused by the ailment, by almost 99 per cent, is to always check your breasts for such tiny lumps, he said.

Also, Olaleye described prostate cancer as mostly responsible for the untimely deaths of men over 40 years in Nigeria, adding that the incidence could be checked through screening.

The New and Improved Flu Killer

Researchers conducted a test of the new four-strain influenza vaccine, available for the first time this year, to determine how well it protected against the flu in young children.

The four strain vaccine, which protects against four types of influenzatwo viruses from the A class and two from the B classdoes as good a job of protecting against flu than the three-strain shot, but is better at preventing moderate to severe disease than the traditional immunization.

The international group of researchers, who described their findings in a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine, attributed the four-strain, or quadrivalent vaccines effectiveness to the fact that it contained both circulating B types of influenza. In previous years, in which only one of the B strains was included, the immunization had a 50-50 chance of being mismatched to the circulating virus, making it less effective.

The scientists tested the quadrivalent flu vaccine in 2,379 children ages three to eight in Bangladesh, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Lebanon, Panama, the Philippines, Thailand and Turkey and compared their rates of flu infection to a control group of 2398 children who received a hepatitis A vaccine. The study was sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, which donated both vaccines for the trial.

Compared to the control group, the four strain vaccine was 55% effective in protecting against flu. Thats similar to the efficacy of the three strain shots, but, the research team found, the quadrivalent shot was 70% effective in preventing more serious cases of the flu; most of the children who did get sick after getting vaccinated only had mild symptoms. The four-strain shot also resulted in 69% fewer medical visits, 75% fewer hospitalizations, 77% fewerabsencesfrom school, and 61% fewer parentabsencesfrom work.

Thats an important benefit, since flu can result in lost school days for children and lower productivity for adults. The efficacy of the vaccine was higher against moderate-to-severe diseasea potentially important end point associated with the highest clinical, social, and economic burdenthan against illness of any severity, the authors conclude.
