The Free Software Definition

The free software definition presents the criteria for whether a particular software program qualifies as free software. From time to time we revise this definition, to clarify it or to resolve questions about subtle issues. See the History section below for a list of changes that affect the definition of free software.

Free software means software that respects users' freedom and community. Roughly, the users have the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software.

Thus, free software is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of free as in free speech, not as in free beer.

With these freedoms, the users (both individually and collectively) control the program and what it does for them. When users don't control the program, the program controls the users. The developer controls the program, and through it exercises power over the users. Therefore, a nonfree or proprietary program is an instrument of unjust power.

A program is free software if the program's users have the four essential freedoms:

A program is free software if it gives users adequately all of these freedoms. Otherwise, it is nonfree. While we can distinguish various nonfree distribution schemes in terms of how far they fall short of being free, we consider them all equally unethical.

The rest of this page clarifies certain points about what makes specific freedoms adequate or not.

Freedom to distribute (freedoms 2 and 3) means you are free to redistribute copies, either with or without modifications, either gratis or charging a fee for distribution, to anyone anywhere. Being free to do these things means (among other things) that you do not have to ask or pay for permission to do so.

You should also have the freedom to make modifications and use them privately in your own work or play, without even mentioning that they exist. If you do publish your changes, you should not be required to notify anyone in particular, or in any particular way.

7 Steps to Build a Small Business Website

Today, every entrepreneur, small business owner, home-based business owner, and anyone selling products or servicesmusthave a presence on the Internet. If you dont already, make launching a business website your key goal for the coming year.

Regardless of your other marketing methods, enabling potential customers to either find you through a Google search or learn more about you after theyve seen your other marketing material is key to creating and developing new customers.

If youre selling online services or products, having a website is obvious. But even if you dont sell anything directly online, the website can serve as an extension of your business card, with information about you, your business, and services offered. Most important, your website should detail your background, experience, and other credentials to give you credibility and give potential customers more confidence when deciding whether or not to deal with you.

MORE ALLBUSINESS:

Creating a website for your small business can be easier than you think. You can do it yourself if you are so inclined or need to keep costs down, you can get a friend to help, or you can hire a Web developer to do it for you at a modest cost if you use available content management software instead of having a website custom developed for you.

Whether you do it yourself or hire someone to do it for you, it will be easier if you understand these steps, which are an important part of the process to create your small business website.

1. Decide the purpose for your website

The first step is to decide what your website is going to do for you.

It may be fairly static (i.e., no new content added periodically) and simply provide more information to potential clients about your services and credentials if they want to check you out online.

Or, you may want to use it for information about your company and provide articles or information youve written to provide useful information to clients and potential clients. You may even chose to start a blog to interest and engage potential customers as part of your overall social media strategy.

PRESS RELEASE: Ströer Media AG: Ströer plans to become a European corporation

DGAP-News: Strer Media AG / Key word(s): Strategic Company Decision/Miscellaneous Strer Media AG: Strer plans to become a European corporation

19.12.2013 / 10:34

=--------------------------------------------------------------------

Strer Media AG is planning to change its legal form from a German corporation (AG) to a European corporation (Societas Europaea/SE). This up-to-date, modern legal form will clearly demonstrate Strer Media AG's image of itself as a European company to the public.

The business activities of Strer Media SE will continue to be governed by the management board, which will also continue to be overseen by the supervisory board. The planned transformation will not affect the rights of shareholders and employees. When the transformation is complete, Strer Media AG's shareholders will automatically become shareholders in Strer Media SE, and shareholder rights and financial reporting will not be affected by the planned transformation. The company will continue to be headquartered in Cologne.

In the view of the management board of Strer Media AG, the planned change in legal form represents a further consistent step in the development of the company following the growth of recent years and is a special way to promote the development of an open, transparent and international corporate culture.

'The developments of recent years and our entry into the online marketing business have made the company even more international. In addition to our core markets of Germany, Turkey and Poland, our blowUP giant billboard network has given us a presence in Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. We also operate technology hubs in New Zealand and the Czech Republic,' explained Udo Mller, CEO of Strer Media AG. 'That is why we have suggested this measure to our shareholders, in order to reflect our increasingly international staff, customers and shareholders in the legal form of the company and to strengthen our positioning in international markets.'

The company's shareholders will be asked to approve the planned transformation at the 2014 annual general meeting.

About Strer Strer Media AG is a leading provider of online advertising and out-of-home, and offers its advertising customers individualized and fully integrated premium communications solutions. In the field of digital media, Strer is setting new standards for innovation and quality in Europe and is thus opening up new and innovative opportunities for targeted customer contact for its advertisers.

One-word change to draft Egypt constitution stirs controversy

Amr Moussa, center, the chairman of Egypt's 50-member panel responsible for amending the country's Islamist-drafted constitution, arranges the members for a group picture in Cairo after finishing the final draft of a series of constitutional amendments. (Amr Nabil / Associated Press / December 2, 2013)

December 18, 2013, 8:38 a.m.

CAIRO -- Whats in a word? A lot, if its a last-minute change to the draft of Egypts new constitution.

Two members of the panel appointed by the government to rewrite the national charter said an alteration was made after the final draft had been voted on by the committee. The document is to be put to a nationwide referendum next month.

The change -- amending the phrase civilian rule to civilian government. -- might not seem like much. But that wording has been contentious in the past.

The term civilian rule is supported by secular liberals, because it is meant to prevent either religious or military figures from taking charge of the state. The wording of civilian government is considered less broad-brush, because in Egypt the Cabinet is equated with the government. So it leaves an opening for key non-Cabinet posts to be filled by religious or military officials.

The two panel members who disclosed the change after the version was read out in public were Bishop Antonious, representing the Roman Catholic Church, and Mohamed Abul-Ghar, head of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party.

The bishop told the Ahram website that the committee head, Amr Moussa, appeared to stumble over the term when he read the preamble aloud. Abdul-Ghar said members did not see the revised wording in print until committee members got cleaned-up versions of the draft days after the vote -- during a dinner reception hosted by the armed forces.
