How the Billion-Member Social Network is Making Us Lonely

Tech Talk: Facebook Celebrates its 10th BirthdayIBTimes UK

Mark Zuckerberg's character played by Jesse Eisenberg in 2010's The Social Network described Facebook as the online equivalent of college students' social lives.

"People wanna go on the internet and check out their friends, so why not build a website that offers that? Friends, pictures, profiles...I'm talking about taking the entire social experience of college and putting it online."

But as Facebook celebrates its 10th birthday, the website which grew from a Harvard dorm room to become a multi-billion dollar social superpower could be as damaging as it is useful, as psychologists find the social transition from offline to online is far from simple.

Addicted to Facebook

Despite its young age, research has already been undertaken into the effects of being addicted to Facebook, and how a never-ending stream of news from the lives of friends can have a detrimental impact on our sense of well-being.

Daria Kuss of Birmingham City University told IBTimes UK: "Depressive symptoms of excessive Facebook use are likely to relate to the overemphasis on weak ties between individuals which are propagated online and the substitution of real life friendships by online friendships."

Kuss blames the often "superficial" status of many Facebook friends - who can be acquired at the click of a mouse and never actually interacted with - for problems with users' real-life relationships.

"Particularly for young and/or socially inexperienced individuals these online friendships may become too important, at the expense of deeper and stronger ties with friends in real life. Participating in social networking sites may therefore result in feeling 'alone together' amidst 'friends'."

Facebook celebrates 10 years with Look Back app

The company thanks its 1.23 billion members with a product that celebrates their social-networking past.

Facebook Look Back.

Facebook turns 10 on Tuesday, February 4, and is celebrating by giving its audience of 1.23 billion people a way to relive their digital history on the network with a special release called Look Back.

Look Back is meant to be a sentimental experience. It lets members on the Web or mobile either watch a personalized movie, view a collection of their top photos, or read a "thank you" card from the company, depending on how much content they have posted to the service. Those who get the movie will be able to edit the posts that are included in their little Facebook flicks.

"It's been an incredible journey so far, and I'm so grateful to be a part of it. It's been amazing to see how people have used Facebook to build a real community and help each other in so many ways," Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement shared with CNET. "In the next decade, we have the opportunity and responsibility to connect everyone and to keep serving the community as best we can."

Facebook's plan for the next decade is to spread the social-networking love to emerging products. Closer to home, the company is campaigning for coolness and reinventing itself with a series of standalone applications that present Facebook in alternative formats. Monday, the 10-year old company released Paper for iPhone owners in the US. The application presents News Feed and other news in a digestible format better suited for smartphones. Paper seems to be an imagining of what the social network would be like if it were built in 2014.

Look for Look Back to pop up in News Feed and stir up social-networking nostalgia on Tuesday.
