Free tax prep in Bastrop County

Did you earn $58,000 or less in 2013? If so, you are eligible for free income tax preparation and assistance through United Way for Greater Austins Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program in Bastrop County.

Last year, the Bastrop tax center prepared close to 200 tax returns, said Faith Sams, United Way financial opportunity program outreach coordinator. Families and individuals can save money on return preparation fees and get the same attention and professionalism that they would at a retail tax preparer.

There are two ways to file your taxes for free.

United Way, Wal-Mart and Bank of America have teamed up to provide free tax preparation online using H&R Block software at myfreetaxes.com/uwatx.

If your household made $52,000 or less in 2013, taxes can be filed in person with an IRS-certified volunteer at Workforce Solutions of Bastrop County, 53 Loop 150 West, now through April 12 on Thursdays from 5-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A large percentage of the folks we help are return customers and everyone is very pleased with the service we provide them, said VITA volunteer coordinator Ben Williams. Just being able to help others and being a resource for the community is what I enjoy about helping others with their taxes.

Williams has been with the VITA program for three years and said he also enjoys knowing that the free service keeps hundreds of dollars in the community and in the hands of the taxpayers.

While supplies last, $10 H-E-B gift cards will be given to those who complete their taxes in person.

Materials needed to file taxes include: Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for each family member and working adult; W-2s, 1099s, 1098s and other income forms; childcare provider name, address and tax ID (if applicable); and bank routing and account numbers for checking or savings accounts.

Dial 2-1-1 or visit unitedwayaustin.org for more information.

Joomla Security Solutions Make Internet Safer

Boston MA (PRWEB) February 11, 2014

The UK based Safer Internet Organization http://www.saferinternet.org.uk has declared February 11th as Safer Internet Day. The CNP Integrations team are frequent bloggers and presenters on security topics; http://www.cnpintegrations.com/blog. CNP stands committed with the Joomla Community to raise awareness and open dialog on ways to make the internet a safer place for everyone. They are doing their part in helping to get folks involved in this important initiative while taking hands on steps to keep the bad guys out and reporting them to the authorities.

The Joomla development community has been one of the most aggressive when it comes to security. The latest 3.2 release of Joomla now features two factor authentication. What this means is Joomla now has security authentication options like your bank portal where they can require you to use a second security code to log in. This is usually a code sent to your smart phone or email that expires in 10 minutes or less. This feature significantly reduces the potential of hackers to access your site through a log in hacks.

With the release of 3.3, Joomla ups the minimum requirement for use of php, the underlying language Joomla is programmed in. This raises the bar significantly empowering hosting companies to better protect the server environments on which these sites are hosted. The Joomla community is also reaching out to all of the major hosting companies in an effort to further bolster security. They are opening direct communication channels with the key players in the development community so there can be an even faster response to security threats. It is a known fact that hacker networks have made advancements of tools that could be used for good or bad depending on the intention of the user. The development community as a whole has found that being aggressive and proactive is always the best way to discourage illegitimate use of emerging technologies and to encourage the positive aspects of the open source revolution.

To further security measures CNP just announced a new hosting platform built in partnership with Cloud Access. Their new Hosting and Security Services platform allows them to scan, test, optimize and lock down Joomla CMS better than any other open source CMS solution in the marketplace.

CNP Integrations began a transition to further fortify their hosting platform in mid 2013 through their relationship with http://CloudAccess.net which has one of the most secure and optimized hosting services dedicated to Joomla. CNP coupled the insane support from the CloudAccess team with CNPs advanced security and monitoring systems and a dedicated service team that specializes in support specific to the Joomla CMS. They packaged this into a bundled service that is not only affordable but works like an insurance policy for a company or organizations web assets. We found that most companies or organizations that depend out their web sites as a critical aspect of their business and communications do have a significant need to aggressively protect their web property but often do not have time to keep up on all of the security challenges in the market place. Our customers just want to rest assured their content safe and protected from the bad guys and that if they do for some unfortunate reason have a security breach, that there is a proactive team ready to respond with diligence, says Christopher Nielsen, CEO of CNP integrations.

CNP has a history delivering business class web security solutions. In 2012, CNP Integrations launched a Joomla lifeline program to help site owners with older versions of Joomla to transition into the latest and greatest technologies. The intention was to improve security while maximizing the use of their technology investment. This program helped companies that had invested 40,000 or more into their initial web infrastructures but could not afford to then again invest this much every year. This program helped lock down and protect their existing portal systems with advanced security techniques while taking a strategic approach for building on their next generation systems. While the Joomla Lifeline Program is still in offered, with their latest hosting and service platform CNP can respond with innovative solutions designed to stay ahead of the vigorous hacking that is prevalent online today.

Joomla! CMS, http://www.Joomla.org, first took the marketplace by storm in 2005 and has since been rapidly gaining market share globally that is fast approaching nearly 3% of all websites online. The Joomla CMS ranks number one in most of Europe and is consistently in the top three CMSs in its class around the world. Since the overwhelming success of Joomla has been built from a 100% volunteer organization it is a unique business model is which stands out in the marketplace and leaves many folks consistently in amazement.

The CNP Integrations team has been involved on many levels as a contributor to the Joomla Community and has built their web solutions business, focusing on the virtually unlimited potential for using this content management system. While Joomla CMS has proven to be very popular for small businesses it is also in wide use with larger enterprises, educational institutions and nonprofits because of its unique ability for rapid deployment, ease of use and massive collection of out of the box 3rd party extensions available. CNP believes these factors make Joomla a fantastic choice for future proofing any organizations online programs and thus the reasoning behind their focus on Joomla.

CNP Integrations has been regarded as one of the premier Joomla technical and development support firms in the industry. Armed with superior Joomla CMS experience, enthusiastic Problem Solving talent and a great reputation in the web portal development business community, CNP Integrations plans to continue their involvement and leadership in the Joomla Development Community.

Askem likely to be Windows Phone's next social app

Microsoft Ventures said Tuesday that it has invested in Askem, a social quiz app that so far has existed just for the iOS ecosystem.

Unlike other decision making apps like Jelly, Seesaw and Polar, Askem goes after the toughest issue with social decision makinggetting actionable answers from the wall of noise, Rahul Sood, general manager for Microsoft Ventures, said in a blog post. The app is fun, addictive and has a huge potential to scale.

A closeup of the Askem app.

Well, perhaps. Askem works by allowing you to upload a picture as well as a question, with several possible answers. Users then choose one of your answers, with a percentage of the total votes determining the winner. The app integrates with Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr, Instagram and Twitter, and includes a beta version of an embeddale plugin allowing an app-like experience onWordPress, Joomla! and Drupal.

Oh, and Jelly and Polar dont run on Windows Phone, so theres that. (Seesaw is a Windows Phone 7 app.)

Microsoft is positioning this as a fun way to interact with friends, as well as a (gulp) way for advertisers and brands to solicit feedback from customers and shoppers. Microsofts Windows Phone app woes have been well documented, and the upcoming release of Windows Phone 8.1 and its SDK have begun provoking leaks that include Universal Apps that can run on Windows Phone and Windows 8.1, both.

Unfortunately, the top three reviews that show up on AskemsiOS app pageare uniformly negative. I was thinking oh what a great way to get ideas on outfits and stuff then it took a year to sign up, like 50 trys uploading a question, and then I had to go through a bunch of stuff for people to see my question, a user with the odd name of I dislike your taste in tea wrote. And there are some weird questions you dont want to answer. So now Im thinking actually no.

Which, presumably means that Microsoft both will be bringing this app to Windows Phoneand solving this helpful list of issues in time for the launch.
