Boehner: Obama 'will spoil the well'

House Speaker John Boehner blames President Barack Obama for Congresss inability to pass an immigration reform bill, saying that its a lack of trust in the president that keeps members of the GOP from getting it done.

The American people want us to deal with immigration reform, Boehner said on Fox Newss Kelly File on Monday. Ive tried to get the House to move on this now for the last 15 or 16 months. But every time the president ignores the law, like the 38 times he has on Obamacare, our members look up and go, Wait a minute: You cant have immigration reform without strong border security and internal enforcement, how can we trust the president to actually obey the law and enforce the law that we would write?

The Senate passed a bipartisan, comprehensive package of immigration reforms last year, but the Republican-controlled House hasnt taken up that bill and has been slow to move any piecemeal reforms through the lower chamber.

Obama has been pressured by Democrats to use executive powers to slow deportations and make de facto reforms to immigration, something Boehner warned would derail any efforts entirely.

That will make it almost impossible to ever do immigration reform, because he will spoil the well to the point where no one will trust him by giving him a new law that he will implement the way the Congress intended, Boehner said.

Boehner also said recent comments by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush that immigration is an act of love and shouldnt be penalized as highly would not disqualify Bush in a presidential race, but that they were misguided.

Listen, to most people around the world, the United States is utopia, and, frankly, most people in the world want to come here, so I understand what Jeb was saying, Boehner said. But were also a nation of laws. And for those who are here without documents, theyre going to have to face the law at some point.

Young Immigrants: Impulsive or Obama's Conscience?

President Barack Obama stepped back to give Republicans room to pass immigration reform and in swooped the impatience of youth.

Young immigrants, many not here legally, have ramped up their demand that Obama grab what he can now by using his executive authority to suspend deportations and worry later about winning over Republicans to sweeping reforms.

These young immigrants have been dogging Obama for years and got a taste of victory when, before the November 2012 elections, Obama suspended deportations temporarily for young immigrants. That didnt make them go away.

They are back for more and are joined by more established groups, including the National Council of La Raza, who are increasingly saying its time to shift strategies on immigration reform, after more than a decade of no results on comprehensive legislation.

He (Obama) decided to make enforcement a big issue. He thought he was going to be able to change Republicans' minds. It hasnt worked. Republicans hate him and we still dont have comprehensive immigration reform, said Erika Andiola, co-director of the DREAM Action Coalition.

This past weekend a coalition that included the young DREAMers marched to a park near the White House. Other rallies and marches took place in other cities in protest of an estimated 2 million deportations during Obama's presidency.

He (Obama) decided to make enforcement a big issue. He thought he was going to be able to change Republicans' minds. It hasnt worked. Republicans hate him and we still dont have comprehensive immigration reform."

Are these young immigrants the latest voices of conscience for Obama and the country, much like the black youth who sat at whites-only lunch counters or the anti-Vietnam War protestors on college campuses? Or are they impulsive idealists who fail to understand that politics is about give and take and timing?

There was some feeling that the young immigrants were ungrateful when the clash escalated last month. Thats when the president of NCLR called Obama deporter in chief and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus considered issuing a resolution demanding the president expand deportation deferrals he authorized for hundreds of thousands of young immigrants here illegally, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

Is DACA nothing? California Democratic Rep. Xavier Becerra said at the time. I would talk to the hundreds of thousands of families who today are not in fear, not having their young man or woman, son or daughter deported as a result of DACA. Thats not nothing.

Hillary Clinton embarks on busy three-state swing

Washington (CNN) Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton heads to the West Coast this week for a string of paid speaking engagements in California, Nevada and Oregon.

CNN was first to report the trip back in January, when it was announced that Clinton the favorite to win the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 would keynote a marketing event in San Francisco, headline a speaking tour in San Jose and talk health care with a group in San Diego.

Since the report, Clinton has beefed up her itinerary with a speech to a Portland, Oregon based international women's group, as well as a scrap metal and recycling conference in Las Vegas.

As is true with nearly every trip Clinton takes, the travel is sure to spark talk about whether the former first lady and former senator will run for president in 2016. In the past month, Clinton has stepped deep into foreign and domestic politics during her appearances, especially issues that are in the new or being debated in Washington.

Clinton's trip starts on Tuesday at The Marketing Nation Summit, a three-day meeting of marketing experts from across the country at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The speech is being put on by Marketo, a company that makes software for marketing departments in all kinds of companies. The conference of around 5,000 people costs attendees upwards of $1,195 to attend.

Clinton will then head to Portland, Oregon where she will keynote the 2014 International Speakers Series for the World Affairs Council of Oregon on April 8. The events theme is "Women Changing the World," and organizers expect Clinton to address international women's issues in front of the 3,000 person audience.

Both of Clinton's appearance in San Francisco and Portland were at one point closed to the press. But earlier this month, organizers for both events opened them to the press after getting the go-ahead from Clinton's aides.

Her next event is on Thursday, where Clinton will keynote The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries annual conference in Las Vegas. ISRI is the trade association that represents the scrap recycling industry in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The event brings around 6,000 people together and is billed as the largest gathering of recyclers in the world. Never before has there been such a must-attend scrap recycling event as ISRI2014, said Chuck Carr, vice president of member services for ISRI.

Later that night in San Jose, California, Clinton will be part of the Unique Lives & Experiences speaker series. Clinton's speech is being billed as a "special event" for the group and Howard Szigeti, the event's promoter, said in January that the former first lady was booked because of her life story and the "crowds she can command."
