Obama praises World Series champion Red Sox for helping Boston heal

President Obama has welcomed the World Series champion Red Sox to the White House, praising their triumph on the field last fall while hailing them as a symbol of their city's determined response to the bombing at last year's Boston Marathon.

Obama said Tuesday he's grateful for the role the team played in helping heal the city after the terror attack. He said sometimes sports seems trivial, but it can bring people together like almost nothing else. Red Sox slugger David Ortiz at one point took a selfie of himself and the president as a keepsake.

Flanked by the players and team officials, Obama noted the Red Sox have the winningest championship record in baseball over the past decade. Last year's title was the team's third in a decade.

Obama Welcomes World Series Champion Red Sox

President Barack Obama welcomed the World Series champion Red Sox to the White House Tuesday, praising their triumph on the field while hailing them as a symbol of their city's "grit and resilience" in the wake of last year's Boston Marathon bombing.

Not all of the ceremonial greeting was quite so serious. David Ortiz, Boston's best-known player, presented the president with a Red Sox jersey emblazoned with "Obama" and the number 44 on the back, then promptly took a cell phone picture of himself and the chief executive. "What an honor, thanks for the #selfie @BarackObama" he quickly tweeted.

And Jonny Gomes, an outfielder, strolled the White House grounds dressed in a sports jacket that looked like an American flag, stars on one half, and stripes on the other.

Standing in front of players and team officials, Obama noted that the Red Sox have won three championships in the past decade, more than any other team.

He said sports sometimes "seems like it's trivial, it's just an entertainment. And then, every once in a while, you're reminded that sports represents something else and it has the power to bring people together like almost nothing else can."

Three people were killed and more than 260 injured nearly a year ago in a bombing at the Boston Marathon. The Red Sox staged a tribute to the victims on the field and had "Boston Strong" symbols sewn into their uniforms. "The point is, Boston and the Red Sox were one," Obama said.

"When they visited bombing victims in the hospital, when they played ball with kids getting cancer treatment, when they started a program to help wounded warriors get treatment at Mass General (Hospital), these guys were saying, 'we're all on the same team.' "

Obama, a Chicago White Sox fan, wished Boston good luck this season, then added, "May the best Sox win."

APC faults NJCs suspension of Rivers Chief Judge

The All Progressives Congress has called on the National Judicial Council to rescind the suspension of the Rivers State Chief Judge, Justice Peter Agumagu, in the interest of justice.

The APC faulted the suspension of Agumagu as a judge, challenging the NJC of not following due process in suspending the state chief judge.

Agumagu was sworn in by the State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, after a Federal High Court had ruled that the governor could appoint a state chief judge from Customary Appeal Court.

But a statement by the state chapter of the party on Tuesday maintained that Agumagu was not given fair hearing by the NJC before being suspended, adding that the council has no power to suspend a sitting state chief judge.

The statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the Interim State Chairman of APC, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, indicated that the NJC should have appealed the High Court ruling that ensured Agumagus appointment as the state chief judge.

The All Progressives Congress, Rivers State Chapter, is convinced that the NJC erred seriously on this issue as due process was not followed in Justice Agumagus suspension and we wish to request the revered NJC to reverse this decision in the interest of justice.

There is a judgment of a competent court headed by Honourable Justice Lambo Akanbi of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, upon which the State House of Assembly and Governor Chibuike Amaechi acted in clearing and swearing in Justice Agumagu as the Chief Judge of Rivers State.

In the said judgment, NJC was a party. NJC has a right of appeal but under part 1, section 21 (d) of the third schedule of the 1999 Constitution, the NJC has no power to suspend Justice Agumagu.

To make matters worse, NJC breached Agumagus fundamental right to fair hearing by suspending him without affording him the opportunity to be heard. The NJC has certainly gone beyond its powers, the statement read.

The APC urged the NJC not to dabble into politics and desist from giving leverage to those desperate to remove the state governor.
