GOP House Armed Services Chair exonerates Obama, Hillary …

GOP Rep. Howard Buck McKeon, the Republican chair of the House Armed Services Committee, says hes satisfied with how the US military and ergo the Obama administration responded to the deadly attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya that killed four Americans, including the US ambassador to Libya.

The news also exonerates expected Democratic presidential nominee, and then-Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. More on that in a moment.

I think Ive pretty well been satisfied that given where the troops were, how quickly the thing all happened and how quickly it dissipated, we probably couldnt have done more than we did, McKeon said to reporters today, as quoted by AP.

McKeon then went on to plant a not-so-subtle dig at fellow Republicans who keep harping on Benghazi as if there were a real scandal there.

We have been working on this for a long time. We issued a preliminary report, McKeon said. At some point, when we run out of people to talk to, or we run out of people to talk to two or three times, at some point, we think well have as much of this story as were going to get and move on.

Put a fork in that GOP talking point.

Lead Benghazi cheerleader Lindsey Graham has been focused on getting to the bottom.

The Republicans have been trying to make political hay of Benghazi since the attack, which took place on September 11, 2012, only a few months before the presidential election.

But its been an uphill climb for the GOP as the American people apparently understood that while four people dying was a tragic thing, it was just as tragic when some 13 attacks on US diplomatic missions during the Bush years killed 17 Americans. Thats like four Benghazis.

Of course, the actual 9/11, which was also under George Bushs watch, was like 744 Benghazis, but whos counting.

Chairman Satisfied With Military on Benghazi – ABC News

The GOP chairman of the House Armed Services Committee said Thursday he is satisfied with how the military responded to the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Republicans are pressing ahead with multiple congressional investigations, but Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., said the military did what it reasonably could during a chaotic night of two separate attacks on Sept. 11, 2012. The assault killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

"I think I've pretty well been satisfied that given where the troops were, how quickly the thing all happened and how quickly it dissipated, we probably couldn't have done more than we did," McKeon told reporters at a roundtable discussion. "Now, we've made changes since then. We've got more Marine fast teams that we built up security around the world."

Republicans accuse the Obama administration of misleading the American people about a terrorist attack weeks before the presidential election by blaming the assault on protests touched off by an anti-Islam video. An independent investigation and a bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report earlier this year blamed inadequate security and faulted the State Department.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said the Obama administration has not been forthcoming.

"They owe the American people the truth. And when it comes to Benghazi, we've got four Americans who are dead. And their families deserve the truth about what happened, and the administration refuses to tell them the truth," Boehner told reporters at a separate news conference.

McKeon said five committees are investigating. His panel and members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee interviewed retired Gen. Carter Ham, who headed the Africa command, for nearly seven hours on Wednesday. McKeon said he was told lawmakers heard nothing new in the testimony by Ham, who has spoken to investigators at least six times.

"We have been working on this for a long time. We issued a preliminary report," McKeon said. "At some point, when we run out of people to talk to, or we run out of people to talk to two or three times, at some point, we think we'll have as much of this story as we're going to get and move on."

Democrats have called for an end to the investigations, arguing that Republicans are on a futile search for information to embarrass the Obama administration. Republicans reject those calls and insist there are numerous unanswered questions and that they owe it to the families of the dead Americans to investigate.

The Armed Services Committee's interim report released earlier this year said the military's response "was severely degraded because of the location and readiness posture of U.S. forces, and because of lack of clarity about how the terrorist action was unfolding. However, given the uncertainty about the prospective length and scope of the attack, military commanders did not take all possible steps to prepare for a more extended operation."

GOP Unites Behind Issa’s Tough Tactics on Benghazi, IRS Probes

California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, has kept pressure on the White House while garnering mixed reviews for his approach, McClatchy reported.

Under Issa's leadership, the committee has investigated the IRS scandal involving the targeting of conservative groups, the State Department's mischaracterization of the attacks against U.S. facilities in Benghazi, the Operation Fast and Furious gun-running program, and other administration blunders.

Urgent: Is Obama Telling the Truth on IRS, Benghazi Scandals?

But Republicans tend to give Issa high marks. Former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Issa is likely "the most prominent Republican trying to understand the various ways this administration breaks the law. By force of intellect, personality and administrative skill, he will be one of the top 10-15 House Republicans the rest of his career," McClatchy reported.

Former Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., who once headed the oversight committee, said Issa had pushed the envelope in making the Obama administration accountable for its actions.

"He's doing fine. I don't think he's overplayed his hand. Everything he does, he gets attacked by Democrats right off the bat. He's taken a lot of hits; it comes with the territory," Davis said.

Rep. Gerald Connolly, D-Va., an oversight committee member said, "I think Darrell can't help but trip on himself and, ultimately because of hubris, always makes himself the issue."

Norman Ornstein, of the American Enterprise Institute, said, "Issa's propensity to overreach and sometimes exaggerate shifts the focus from the investigation to Issa. The fact that he hasn't gotten the goods at any point reflects poorly on the committee and its chairman."

Issa's defenders say that the investigations the committee has pursued under his leadership led to several resignations, including of Steven Miller, the acting IRS Commissioner, and U.S. Attorney Dennis Burke, in connection with the gun program.

Critics say the cost to taxpayers has been immense. The IRS, for example, has spent some $7.9 million on preparing for Congressional hearings and answering queries.
