City taps new economic development coordinator

By Ken Jackson Staff Writer

Brian OConnor calls much of what he does economic gardening. If thats the case, the city of St. Cloud hopes he is a great cultivator.

OConnor, the citys new Economic Development and Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Coordinator, reported for duty within the last week and is already laying out the groundwork for plans to promote the professional standard of living and economic health of St. Cloud.

The City Council created the full-time municipal position to help prospective businesses move into the city, while working to improve the local business climate to make that move easier and financially worthwhile. OConnor will report to Growth Management Services Administrator Dennis Ragsdale.

The staff here is very professional and first class, and the right leadership is in place. The city is laying down a good plan that will drive development, OConnor said.

The native Clevelander (who loves his Browns and Indians) will lean on 18 years of experience working in local government in places like Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Jackson, Mich. and Vero Beach.

He said St. Cloud provides a unique and fertile area to develop and grow.

At first blush I see opportunities to grow, such as partnering with Medical City in Lake Nona, OConnor said, also noting the citys relationship with the University of Central Florida and its Business Incubator in St. Cloud.

He said he hopes to implement aggressive internal strategies to remove any roadblocks businesses might find in relocating to the city and make the process as seamless as possible.

Its nice to recruit business, but my hope is to grow the infrastructure that makes that possible, he said.

Six generations living a legacy

News-Gazette Photo/Andrew Sullivan The Martinez family in Kissimmee is celebrating six generation strong. This family has bound together and overcome nearly every obstacle that has come its way.

By Tremene Triplett For the News-Gazette

At first glance, Lydia Martinez 73, of Kissimmee, may resemble any other mother who left her native Salinas, Puerto Rico in search of a brand new start in the United States.

Like many before and after her, Martinez hails from a small town, and had heard of the big city of New York and all that it had to offer. It wasnt long before Martinez made her move to the United States in 1961, with one son in tow, but leaving behind three daughters until she could send for them.

Martinez the eldest of nine children moved to Rochester, New York, where her brother, Luis Antonetti, established the familys roots and built the familys reputation as outstanding musicians. While Martinezs English was bleak, she picked cherries and worked in clothing factories to support her family before ultimately gaining employment in 1969 at General Motors.

While Martinezs story sounds ordinary to this point what separates her from most is the strong, multi-generational family tree that has grown since her humble beginnings in the United States. Some 51 years later, the Martinez family is six generations strong.

Mommy Lydia as her grandchildren refer to her, is a proud daughter, mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother.

In this day and time of reality TV shows that exploit the frailties and dysfunction of families, the Martinez family can share a thing or two about family togetherness, love and overcoming.

CAUGHT in CROSSFIRE: Journalists INJURED while FLEEING rebel GUNFIRE in Damascus! [SYRIA WAR CRISIS]
A group of international journalists -- including members of RT #39;s Arabic team -- have been caught in crossfire in Syria while covering the army #39;s operations outside the capital. RT #39;s correspondent suffered light injuries while trying to escape. Syrian government forces have been trying to clear the area of rebels occupying the Damascus suburb of Daraya. Several international journalists, including Russians, Iraninans and Syrians, joined the group to report on the early morning operation and found themselves caught in heavy gunfire. "We were moving from street to street, and when we reached the dock, my colleagues and I got caught in crossfire," RT Arabic correspondent Kamel Saqer explained. "We tried to escape, running one after another fearing that armed rebels would notice us. A Syrian army soldier accompanied us the entire time -- he constantly kept his eye on the situation and helped us to escape the gunfire." It was unclear whether the rebels were deliberately targeting journalists, all of whom were wearing bulletproof vests with clearly visible word #39;press #39; on them, Saqer said. The firing was very intense and it was difficult to find shelter, Saqer added. "I ran and fell down, I hurt my arms -- but the Syrian army doctors gave me first aid on the scene. So I could continue to do my job." #39;There #39;s no way to be safe in wartime #39; According to recent studies, Syria was the most dangerous country for journalists in 2012, with over 50 correspondents killed while covering ...
