Ibiza beaches – White Ibiza

Post navigation

A sleepy little resort style beach on the north coast of the island, San Miguel feels a bit like the Ibiza beach that time forgot, thanks to its retro style sun loungers and umbrellas, faded old hotel facades dominating the shores and tourist shops chock-full of the same lilos that they stocked in 1988 but we love it! Less boho than her sister beach Benirras, the vibe on San Miguel is classic family fun, with the flat cove of sand and shallow waters perfect for parents to keep an eye on their little ones while they relax and soak up the sun.

White Ibiza loves: Taking a hike through the pine-clad hills to the left of the beach, where youll find a hidden beach with a secret chiringuito, a beautiful old pirate tower and another island-like beach that faces opposite the port, for a different perspective on the area.

Cala Saladita can be spotted from the neighboring bay of Cala Salada, but getting there is a just a wee bit of a challenge in the peak of summer be prepared to clamber over the rocky divide! The (potentially sweaty) result is well worth it, when you arrive at the smaller, quieter beach with amazing snorkeling opportunities after all, a quick dive into the sea and youre instantly refreshed. There are no tourist amenities or chiringuitos (unless you want to trek or swim back over to Cala Salada), so pack a picnic, bring an umbrella and enjoy the chilled out vibe!

10 Things About… Great British Bake Off judge Mary Berry

The Great British Bake Off is back on our TV screens for its fifth series.

The ratings have shown the move to BBC One to be a massive success, with more of you watching the show than ever before.

1. Mary Berry was born in 1935, the second child of Alleyne and Marjorie Berry. Her father served as the Mayor of Bath in 1952 and her mother lived to the ripe old age of 105.

2. At 13, she contracted polio and spent three months in hospital, leaving her with a twisted spine, a weaker left hand, and a thinner left arm. Always looking on the bright side of life, however, she's credited the illness with toughening her up and teaching her to make the most of every opportunity. Amazingly, Mary Berry's horse came to visit her in hospital.

3. Academic studies were never her forte, but she began to shine in domestic science class, under the guidance of the aptly named Miss Date. Berry's first creation was a treacle sponge pudding.

5. Rumour has it that the prim and proper judge is a bit of a party animal. She tried her first cigarette at the age of 8, and while she never touched another one, she can still rave with the best of us. Believe it or not, she was partying at Pacha in Ibiza at the age of 71, and famously started knocking back tequila slammers like water after a Bake Off cast dinner.

Skip to 2.45 to see Bake Off hosts Sue and Mel reveal Berry's debauched ways to Alan Carr.

6. While we don't want to entertain the idea of her no longer being with us, what would she eat as a last meal?

Echoes of US 'culture wars' between liberals and Christians

Many key battlegrounds involve issues where traditional religious ideas clash with modern notions of sexuality, such as abortion, homosexuality and contraception.

The culture wars have been simmering since the 1960s, but the phrase was popularised by the sociologist James Davison Hunter in 1991.

A year later, a speech by firebrand politician Patrick Buchanan to the Republican National Convention, in which he described a religious war for the soul of America, famously became known as the "culture war speech".

In it, he identified issues such as gay rights, pornography, abortion and discrimination against religious schools as "not the kind of change we can abide in a nation that we still call God's country".

Buchanan said: "This election is about much more than who gets what. It is about who we are. It is about what we believe.

"It is about what we stand for as Americans.

"There is a religious war going on in this country.

"It is a cultural war, as critical to the kind of nation we shall be as was the Cold War itself, for this war is for the soul of America."

The worst manifestations of the culture wars have seen violence directed towards abortion providers, with at least eight doctors, receptionists and security guards killed in such attacks in America over the past two decades.
