Following up on the story we posted Thursday about the new DJ wars in Las Vegas and the mind-boggling megabucks contracts comes news that MGM Grand intends to throw its own Electronic Dance Music festival.

And those numbing numbers of $20 million over two years I reported for the spinmeisters of steel were apparently on the low side! Thanks to my pal David Morris at DailyFiasco.com for helping update our first revelations.

The news I uncovered was apparently set to be revealed at the Grammy Awards in February, with two of Hakkasan at MGM Grands new resident DJs performing. Daily Fiasco is reporting that MGM Grand is partnering with Angel Management Group for a series of EDM arena concerts that will feature the new Hakkasan stars and include Tiesto, Steve Aoki and Calvin Harris alongside Deadmau5.

I apparently underreported the staggering Deadmau5 paychecks. Yes, it is a two-year deal with his shows earning him $425,000 each -- with sometimes two a day, at Wet Republic and Hakkasan, and in the MGM Arena for an astonishing $850,000.

Bring on 2013 but stay safe

Topics: fireworks, mackay regional council, new years eve

OUT with the old and in with the new.

Most of us will be counting down to 2013, whether it's from a backyard barbecue with family, a special party or a public celebration.

And while many will be enjoying a few ales to toast the New Year, Mackay police are encouraging party-goers to act and drink responsibly tonight.

Mackay police station officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Peter Cowan said there would be a strong police presence across the region.

"There will be over 50 officers from the division working across Mackay, not just in the CBD area," he said.

Snr Sgt Cowan said during the festive season they had received more calls ... due to more residents partying.

"It is not necessarily a worse period than normal, but during the festive season we get a higher rate of calls."

Snr Sgt Cowan said with the new nightclubs and bars in the CBD more people were in the area, which had given police new challenges.

"People must remember to manage themselves appropriately and that they should drink responsibly and are accountable for their actions.

Rumor has it: Cocoon leaving Amnesia??

Running one of the most successful techno nights on the island for many years, neither the clubs nor the promoters have yet officially confirmed the Cocoon move. But what we do know is that last summer Cocoon was facing challenges with a significant expansion in the nightlife scene with parties like Jamie Jones Hot Creations at DC10 and Richie Hawtins appearances as ENTER at Space, all addressing the same underground audience. Same as Music On, Amnesias new premium techno addition on Fridays.

Friday nights at Amnesia turned out to be an overwhelming success from the opening to the closing. We can only guess that Marco Carolas selection of a magnetic underground DJ line up in combination with an extremely friendly guest list policy for workers and reasonable door charge had pulled some fans away from Cocoon Mondays, mainly in the season workers and locals circles. Maybe this indeed could have caused Cocoon to reconsider their collaboration with Amnesia and if it turns out that they do make the move from their long-time home base, Monday nights at Space could be a conclusive option.

Though still a rumor, its a buzzing favorite which we are looking forward with anticipation to see if the rumor really has it.

Christmas Crackers Josh Demello | Essential Ibiza News

Posted on December 24, 2012 by admin

Josh Demello was brought up in the dance music scene, from the early days he accompanied his dad to the illegal parties that he was involved in and from that moment he was hooked. While his school friends were buying comics, he was buying Mixmag, soaking in as much information as he could. Fast forward to the present and he has enjoyed a second full season as an Ibiza resident and is getting set to pack his case and travel across the world to fulfil some DJ bookings. Essentialibiza caught up with Josh as part of our Christmas Crackers season

Youve played alongside many of the worlds top DJs, which in particular have you learned from or been inspired by? Ive been lucky enough to play alongside a lot of my favourite DJs over the years but playing alongside Todd Terry at the start of the year meant a lot to me because I have been a huge fan of his since I was a kid. He is the daddy of house music and Ive always been inspired by him. Playing alongside Pete Tong at Privilege and at The Warehouse in Leeds this year was pretty important to me as well as Ive always been inspired by him and his outstanding contributions to the dance music scene.

At 23 you have played at many of the worlds top venues to massive audiences, what are your aspirations and what drives you in achieving them? Id love to one day be known for my contributions to the music industry in some way or another, I love to keep travelling the world and playing in new clubs. Seeing positive energy and people in clubs, having a good time, dancing and enjoying the music is what drives me.

You have a real understanding of the dance music scene, much of which took place before you were born, where does this knowledge come from? My Dad was involved in illegal house and techno raves and warehouse parties throughout the 90s so I was introduced to dance music from a really early age. I was going to a lot of raves and festivals with him when I was a kid. I started to watch DJs and became fascinated by what a DJ does and wanted to learn how to DJ. I fell in love with house music from a very early age and started collecting vinyl from when I was nine years old. I remember being at school and when a lot of the other kids were buying comics I was buying Mixmag and other DJ mags. Dance music and DJing became an obsession and Ive never got out of it, Im glad I was introduced to it and got into it from an early age.

The last couple of years have seen you live and play in Ibiza, how important was that move in your development? Yeah its really important for me. Ive been coming to Ibiza for years, but it was only two summers ago when I was offered the residency at Kanya so decided to stay for the full season. This year I was also a resident at Amnesia, played for a sold out Radio 1 event in the main room of Privilege, played at Space and Sankeys a few times and of course Kanya, Savannah and Caf del Mar on the sunset strip. Its been a great few years and Ive met some amazing people, Its been a lot of fun!

What is your favourite Ibiza gig? Playing on the terrace at Amnesia, Its such a great club when its packed, the vibe is incredible. This year, playing the closing set for Cream on the Amnesia terrace after Eric Prydz was amazing, a lot of my friends were there and it was full to capacity right till the end.
