Internet voting systems too insecure, researcher warns

SAN FRANCISCO -- Internet voting systems are inherently insecure and should not be allowed in the upcoming general elections, a noted security researcher said at the RSA Conference 2012 being held here this week.

David Jefferson, a computer scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories and chairman of the election watchdog group Verified Voting, called on election officials around the country to drop plans to allow an estimated 3.5 million voters to cast their ballots over the Internet in this year's general elections.

In an interview with Computerworld on Wednesday, Jefferson warned that the systems that enable such voting are far too insecure to be trusted and should be jettisoned altogether.

Jefferson is scheduled to participate in a panel discussion on the topic at RSA on Thursday. Also on the panel are noted cryptographer and security guru Ron Rivest, who is the "R" in RSA, and Alex Halderman, an academic whose research on security vulnerabilities in e-voting systems prompted elections officials in Washington to drop plans to use an e-voting system in 2010.

"There's a wave of interest across the country, mostly among election officials and one agency of the [Department of Defense] to offer Internet voting," to overseas citizens and members of the military, Jefferson said. "From a security point of view, it is an insane thing to do."

A total of 33 states allow citizens to use the Internet to cast their ballots. In a majority of cases, those eligible to vote over the Internet receive their blank ballots over the Web, fill them in and submit their ballots via email as a PDF attachment. Some states, such as Arizona, have begun piloting projects that allow eligible voters to log into a web portal, authenticate themselves and submit their ballots via the portal.

The insecurity and the inability to audit such voting practices is unacceptable, Jefferson said.

Ballots sent via email for instance, are transmitted in the clear without encryption. That means any entity, such as an ISP or a malicious hacker that sits between the voter and the county where the vote is being cast, can view, filter, substitute or modify the ballot, he said.

Meanwhile, the e-voting Web portals that have been proposed for use in Arizona and are being tested in other states, are prone to all the security vulnerabilities and attacks that other sites face, he said.

As one example, he pointed to an attack crafted by Halderman , an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Michigan, in 2010 against a Digital Vote by Mail System that was proposed for use in Washington. The system was designed to be used by overseas voters and military personnel based in other countries.

Live Oak I'm all for Relay for Life here in Suwannee County. I have participated for years .How is it you want more supporters when you don't even advertise the upcoming event or give names of the commitee members or phone numbers to contact? More publicity is definetly required to get the job done.

The job for a co. administrator should require a degree along with prior exp. in a similar position, & a favorable reference well removed from the local scene. Lacking that, an exec. with viable exp. in a succesful private sector operation. Approval should involve a non-partisan, volunteer reveiw panel of the citizens who are actually paying for this, clearly not "the pleasure" of the BOCC. THINK PEOPLE, we need to implement a charter in this county.

****

I just learned of the St. Johns District, the North Florida Aquifer Replenishment Initiative, http://northfloridawater.com/?utm_source=2012_February_22&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Water_News. That begs the question, "Where is the Suwannee River District's Aquifer Replenishment Initiative - and implementation schedule?"

I may be confused, coulda sworn a certain commisioner said he wasn't running again just a coupla mos. ago. Sadly, it seems untrue. Wonder why the weekly poll shows we don't put much stock in their decisions, ( like in absolutely not). With such great results & progress, let's put him back in office with 16% of the vote $130K of our money yet again as usual. Maybe he should do the right thing & step aside, ( like he said). Maybe term limits since they can't control their own ego & greed. Maybe we're as stupid as they think we are!

Natalie Kandis – Online Babe March 2012

INTERVIEW BY: GELO GONZALES PHOTOGRAPHY BY: DOC MARLON PECJO MAKEUP BY: WINN RAMOS STYLING BY: BADJ GALIAS-GENATO March 2, 2012|3945 views

Natalie Kandis, a U.K. export now living in Singapore, came over to the Philippines one day. She's here to fulfill two goals. One is to appear in FHM Philippines, which she says is one of her favorite international versions, and two, is to be able to cross out the country from her extensive list of travel destinations.

The girl loves to travel, amongst other things including: animals, dancing, Thai food, house and trance music, and Filipino men. She says she'd like to go to Africa to go on a safari and see wild animals roaming free. She says she craves for those huge parties in Ibiza. And yes she says that she finds Pinoys attractive.

The moment she told us that, we, of course, instantly loved her. As you can see, we are quite easy to flatter like that. And these pin-up photos you see here should make it easy for you to love her, too. She definitely brought some of that U.K. swagger with her, while at the same time incorporating a little bit of that playful Asian flavor that she's learned in her two years living in Asia.

At one point, obligatory queries regarding her stance on relationship came up. In spite of being the type of woman who might just be able to get any man she wants, Natalie confesses that she's indeed very loyal. She can if she wanted to, but this woman professes that she don't flirt around when in a relationship. That's not to say though that she can't be a mean girl. Once, in a trip to Thailand, she let her guy friend flirt around with a lady she already knew was a lady boy. You know, just for a good laugh.

That's Natalie Kandis for you. She can be playful, she can be cute, but she can also quite serious when it comes to the more important things in life. Now, wouldn't you want someone like that for a girlfriend?

What was your favorite part of the shoot today? It has to be the pink underwear because it was really playful, and really sexy. Id love to do a shoot in a beach or a pool though!

Is pink your favorite color? It isnt actually. But thats the reason why today is extra, extra special. I dont actually like pink that much but it made it really, really playful. I had so much fun.

Indeed, pink is playful, and cute. Would you say that your personality is like that as well? I can be at at times. But then I can be quite serious too.

If we ask one of your friends, how would they describe you? Theyll say shes really outgoing, really friendly, bubbly, and that shes a load of fun to go out with.
