The Truth About Social Media Measurement & Marketing Dashboards

With the growing number of social media monitoring and community management software products, the definition of a marketing dashboard seems to have taken numerous forms.

For the purpose of this article, a marketing dashboard will be defined as "the digital display of the most important information needed to track activity related to achieving one or more objectives."

In the context of social media, a relevant example was an article published by Search Engine Watch author Nathan Linnell nearly two years ago that resulted in one of the top five most popular SEW posts of 2010: "6 Key Metrics for a Social Media Measurement Dashboard".

Over a year prior to that article, two friends of mine, Tom Markiewicz and Derek Scruggs, also had a vision about tracking key metrics specific to social media.

While most marketing dashboard products of the time were helping to track various forms of field sales activity and common web analytics Markiewicz and Scruggs recognized few were addressing the kind of real-time data and social media metrics that could facilitate a level of predictive analysis that might impact immediate decision-making.

In 2009,Markiewicz and Scruggsworked the business plan together, articulated the value proposition and delved deeply into the feature set. Their new company, StatsMix, was selected to participate in the TechStars (early-stage business) accelerator program, and quickly piqued the interest of investors who intuitively understood they were onto something big.

Sample StatsMix dashboard, combining web orders, customer phone support and social media metrics.

But as they raced to achieve their minimal viable product and continued to collect feedback from early beta customers, they soon became aware of a stark reality that completely altered their development roadmap over the following two years.

Beta customers began asking a common set of questions that seemed very rudimentary, and not relevant to what StatsMix originally had set out to do.

To protest until censorship stops: Anonymous

In an interview conducted by Pankaj Maru of CyberMedia News over the Internet Relay Chat (IRC), the Anonymous Group members used various nicknames like +Gummy, Amikanon and others

MUMBAI, INDIA: Anonymous Group, which has carried out several cyber attacks against Reliance Communications as well as several government and political parties websites in the past few weeks, talks to Pankaj Maru of CyberMedia News about the groups prime objective to fight censorship of Internet, blocking and curtailing of websites by ISP and government bodies and the Occupy Protest on 9 June.

CIOL: Can you brief us on what led you to start the attacks on RCom and other websites early this month?

+Gummy: Last year itself some ISPs like BSNL and others, had blocked some sites mainly Torrent, Songs.pk, etc. without any court ruling. And then when Isac revealed to us that Reliance Communication is blocking more than 350 plus sites, we decided to act that was on 6 May and then we decided to protest and started 'operation India' or '#OpIndia'. People became aware of it and joined us some of them had hacking skills, some didnt; while some learnt, some were taught. But our main goal was to get rid of the censorship and here we are.

CIOL: Is this the right method to achieve your goal and to protest against censorship?

+Gummy: Who knows? Shouldn't the government be doing something about it? And we are not causing damage to sites. Its the people who have to do that! Did they (government) talk about it in the parliament before censoring? No.

CIOL: Even though it's others and not you damaging the sites, the customers might be suffering?

+Gummy: We did not hit any site which affects commoners. We could have targeted the media sites or IRCTC or passport to get quick attention but no we are among the people.

CIOL: After the 6 May attack, how many more attacks have been carried out and who were the targets?

+Gummy: We did not keep a count because we have no leaders as soon as a website is attacked, we release it to the masses and it gets restored in some time. Government has absolute power and Reliance Communication has absolute money, which makes them a lethal corrupt combo.

Liberty Media Unveils New Plan to Take Control of Sirius XM Radio

Scott Wintrow/Getty Images

John Malone's Liberty Media on Thursday filed details about its new plan to take control of satellite radio firm Sirius XM Radio over time by taking over its board.

The plan raises further questions about the future of Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin, according to a Wall Street observer.

Liberty refiled its FCC application for control of Sirius' licenses, which involves a plan to nominate and vote for its own slate of board members. The company will also convert almost half of its preferred stock into common stock, giving it over 32 percent of common stock.

The FCC recently rejected Liberty's request to control Sirius. Liberty, which currently has five of the 13 seats on the Sirius board, said Thursday it plans to nominate a majority of directors when practical. Until then, the company said it would continue to buy Sirius shares so it gets to a position where it can "replace the entire board of directors by unilateral action."

"We believe that Liberty's new plan to take control of Sirius is very likely to succeed," said Lazard Capital Markets analyst Ross Cohen. "Once it controls the board, we expect it to ramp up [stock buybacks], positive for both Sirius and Liberty Media stocks."

But Sirius CEO Karmazin recently said he would not work for Liberty. "This suggests that Liberty may retain its stake long enough to transition to a new CEO, or potentially much longer," he said.

Sirius couldn't be reached for comment.
