Social Network Guide – A List of Social Networks

Social Networks can be a great home on the web, can help you connect with people or reconnect with long-lost friends, and can even help your career by making business contacts. Social networks range from friends-based networks like Facebook and MySpace to music and movie networks like Flixster and Last.FM to business social networks like LinkedIn and XING.

What is a social network? Why should you join one? How can you get started with social networking? If you are new to the world of social networks, these articles will give you the basics.

It hasn't taken long for Facebook to become the most popular social network on the planet. With the multitude of Facebook applications extending its use and the ease of Facebook Connect to use as a login for various websites, Facebook has become our home on the web.

General social networks do not focus on a particular topic or niche. Instead, they put the emphasis on staying connected to your friends and connecting with new people. These friends-based networks often allow you to join groups and connect with people who have similar interests.

Movie and music social networks focus on connecting people to others who enjoy similar interests in movies or music. They can be a great resource for finding more information about a movie you enjoyed, discovering new music by checking out the playlists of people with similar interests, or just kicking back and playing a movie trivia game.

Mobile users constitute one of the biggest areas of growth in the online market. A number of social networks have sprung up that cater to mobile users in order to better suit their needs. These social networks can be great for arranging impromptu meetings while out on the town.

Did you think social networks were limited to humans? Many different social networks have sprung up devoted to our hairy, four-legged and sometimes slithering-on-their-stomach friends. These pet-based social networks are not only great for meeting other pet owners, but also can be an excellent resource if you are in dire need of finding adopters of a surprise litter.

Hobby and special interest social networks range from those devoted to biking or sports to those who focus on sharing car reviews or dispensing medical advice. They can be a great source of entertainment, information and a great place to go for advice.

Social networks aren't all about fun and games. Social networking in business goes back long before the Internet when use of the 'buddy system' could be the best way to find a job. Business social networks bring that buddy system into the digital age by allowing you to quickly and easily maintain a list of business contacts and make new business connections.

Just finished up with a great book and looking for something similar to read? Reading and book-based social networks can be a great place to find people who share your taste in books. They are a great way to get book reviews, let friends know what your are reading, recommend the latest book that blew you away, and simply share information about literature.

Performance of social networking sites – Index from Keynote Systems for November 2013

Keynote Systems, the expert in internet and mobile cloud monitoring, monitors the top 11 UK social networking sites on a monthly basis and analyses how these sites perform compared to their competitors. By Robert Castley.

The social network homepages were collectively slower in November than in October. Only six out of the 11 site homepages achieved an average load time of less than two seconds the Keynote recommended maximum load time this month, compared to seven falling into this bracket in October. In terms of availability, similarly to last month, ten out of the eleven sites achieved a successful load rate above Keynotes recommended minimum of 99 percent. The site which didnt make this level of service did change, however; in October it was Wayn that only achieved a successful average load rate of 98.81 percent, whereas in November it was LinkedIn which fell below par with a 97.75 percent success rate.

Significant homepage performance changes from October to November came from Wayn which was a lot faster to load, YouTube which was also faster to load, and LinkedIn which was slower to load and less reliable. For Wayn, its faster average load time an improvement from 1.43 seconds in October to 1.04 seconds in November was particularly impressive because there appeared to be minimal changes to the actual composition of the site in terms of the number of objects and page size. The YouTube UK homepage, by contrast, could put its decrease in average load time down to the decrease in page size from 0.41 MB to 0.38 MB. LinkedIn saw the biggest increase in response time, as it took an additional 0.59 seconds for its homepage to load on average. Worse still, not only was the page slow, but it was also unreliable with an average successful load rate of 97.75 percent, significantly lower than the other sites.

Its inevitable that in the run up to Christmas more people are active online, and whether they are buying Christmas gifts or co-ordinating get-togethers, social media is becoming increasingly integrated with these online activities. Social shopping has been reported to be one of the next big trends, in terms of both recommendations by friends on the networks and dedicated shops, but good performance must be maintained if this channel is going to live up to such predictions. Social networks are also becoming the de-facto way to organise and communicate. As many people are too busy for multiple calls and texts, group messages on social media sites are becoming much more popular. As traffic to these sites increases, however, delivering a good customer experience will be tougher and the social networks need to be sure they do enough load testing to cope with a rise in the number of users. Keeping ahead of competitors with better performance is critical to the success of a social network, as it is increasingly determining brand reputation and user retention.

Apple Approves Gay Social App for Ages 12 and Up

A customer looks at an iPhone 4 at the Apple Store 5th Avenue in New York June 24, 2010.

Apple has approved a gay social networking app that claims to be safe for children as young as 12, and aims to lead adults, teens and tweens to places that are "clean, social and fun."

In the iTunes store, Distinc.tt is described as "an LGBT app that you can bring home to Mom!" But although it's supposedly safe for children as young as 12, it specifically states that it was created for "gay dating and chat" for LGBT or "curious adults" who are 18 and older.

The app reportedly works by using "real-time collective knowledge to connect trendsetting crowds and travelers to the places and people that best reflect their distinct interests."

CEO Michael Belkin told CNETthat he launched Distinc.tt because he's "disgusted by the tasteless torsos and imagery on gay social sites and apps." And he wants "the good-taste part of the gay stereotype to gain traction with advertisers and cross the mainstream divide."

Belkin launched what is being billed as "the only gay social app approved by the iTunes store for 12-year-olds and older," with other investors that include PayPal cofounder Peter Thiel and Keith Rabois, a former executive at PayPal and LinkedIn, among others.

"Think of it as the ultimate gay accessory. Using an advanced recommendation engine, Distinc.tt helps you be spontaneousto get out there and start something," reads the description.

"Distinc.tt takes gay apps to the next level by showing you more than just guys with phones. Use it to find places to go, meet people at those places, coordinate with friends while you're out, you name it. It's about doing, not chatting."

Facebook hires French artificial intelligence guru

Professor Yann LeCun, who is currently lecturing at NYUs Center for Data Science, has been studying AIfor decades.

While for now Facebook feeds may seem like a random jumble, LeCun argues these can be improved by intelligent systems.

This could include things like ranking (the items in) news feeds, or determining the ads that are shown to users, to be more relevant, he told AFP.

Then there are things that are less directly connected, like analyzing content, understanding natural language and being able to model users to allow them to learn new things, entertain them and help them achieve their goals.

Limited by the number of smart people in the world

Facebook is the worlds biggest social network; but like all web services, it faces the challenge of maintaining growth, keeping users engaged and delivering enough advertising to generate revenue without annoying its users.

LeCun said the new artificial intelligence lab would be the largest research facility of its kind in the world, though he declined to provide numbers.

Were limited only by how many smart people there are in the world that we can hire, the Paris-born mathematician and computer scientist said.

The lab will be based in three locations New York, London and at Facebooks California headquarters.

But it will also be part of the broader artificial intelligence research community, according to LeCun, who starts his new job in January while keeping his NYU post.
