Buhler’s Nathan Fideldy, Preston Gover win 2nd straight KBN Angler Team of the Year honors – The Topeka Capital-Journal

For the Buhler fishing team of Nathan Fideldy and Preston Gover, their first career win couldnt have come at a better time.

But given their past credentials, its almost incomprehensible that its their first win to begin with.

Nevertheless, the reigning Kansas BASS Nation High School Angler Team of the Year tallied a total of 18.19 pounds during itsfourth and final qualifier April 10 on Wilson Reservoir to capture the AOY title once again and secure itsspot in the state championship June 5-6 on Milford Reservoir.

Getting my first win means a ton," Fideldy said. "I have been super close to winning with second-and third-place finishes. Going into this season, winning a tournament and getting Angler of the Year were my goals. To win for my first time on Wilson Lake, which I call my home lake, makes it even better. Winning Angler of the Year once is a great ordeal, let alone winning it back to back years. I feel as if it shows that we didn't just get lucky last year by being able to back it up this season."

Finishing just behind the Buhler squad was the OutCast Bass Club duo of Brady Daniels and Cameron McClellan, both out of Louisburg, who posted 15.20pounds for the runner-up and a place in the state championships, as well, with Kickbacks Dayne Kobriger and Logan Mothersbaugh finishing third at 13.82pounds for their own state berth.

After this past weekends tournaments, 21 high school teams and 15 youth teams have officially locked in their invites to their respective Kansas BASS Nation state championship tournaments.

In the high school division, the Greater Kansas City area accounted for a large chunk of the anglers, with seven Kickback Club teams, three Olathe East teams and three Basehor-Linwood teams making the field.

Notable among the KC-area teams were the Olathe East Hawks, who won the season opener behind Tyler Kendrick and Ian Bellomos nearly 12-pound bag on Perry and followed it up with an encore from Wyatt Peterson and Miguel Cooper on Melvern.

And Bonner Springs Colton Hutchinson, who made the state field fishing for the Basehor-Linwood club alongside teammate Owen Blackburn, is another notable, as he was selected by BASS in March as Kansas lone member of the 2021 Bassmaster High School All-State Fishing Team.

Still, other parts of central and eastern Kansas were represented in the mix, including a pair of clubs from the Topeka-based Capital City Club in the sibling duo of Nick and Kyle Herrman, making the leap into the high school division this year after dominating the youth ranks, as well as Brock Herrman and Brooks Linnebur.

Manhattan had a pair of teams make the state championship, as well, as the teams of Tyler Bean/Tucker Dobbs and Jordan Thiem/Owen Rausch both made the field.

To the south, Cowley County will be represented this year by Koal Meier and Timber Neal. Circles Trevor Cowman and Levi Nice also give the Wichita area some representation in the field, as well, despite getting disqualified in the final regular-season event whenthey were more than 15 minutes late to weigh in because of boat issues.

In the youth field, the demographics were a bit more spread out, as Circle and Basehor-Linwood led the way with four teams apiece, followed by Louisburg and Kickback (2). Topeka, Hanover and Legacy Christian also each had a team in the state youth field.

Louisburgs Lucas Sheafer and Steele Smith head into the state title hunt as the odds-on favorite after a dominating 2021 regular-season campaign that came to a close with yet another win April 11 on Wilson thanks to a 13.86-pound bag marking three of four qualifier wins this year.

But Circles Hunter Cowman and Will Wolf stopped their three-tournament win streak dating back to last years state title victory in March with a win on Table Rock Lake in Branson, Mo., and will look to build on thatsuccess in the state finale. Their Circle teammates, Aiden Razey and Coy Stephens, are heating up late, as well, taking second in the regular-season finale at Wilson with 12.83pounds.

The Topeka Jr. Hawgs team of Laiken Emanuel and Avery Bowen will be the lone representative for the capital city this year in the youth division, but they have a history of scrapping with dominant teams and could make things interesting in June at Milford.

Down on the farm: Riverstead community brings ‘agrihood’ living to Greenville – Charleston Post Courier

Instead of a golf course, theres a grazing meadow, an orchard and more than 250 acres of preserved Upstate forest along a crook in the Saluda River. Instead of tennis courts, theres a vineyard and a free range chicken coop. Instead of a clubhouse, theres a barn and a garden.

Welcome to Riverstead, a unique community located 30 minutes north of Greenville that harkens back to South Carolinas agricultural foundation. Lucas Anthony, the developer on the project, figured the idea would appeal to those intrigued by the notion of living on a farm, but not quite sure if theyre cut out to till soil and sling feed all day. What he couldnt foresee when development started in 2017 was how the coronavirus pandemic would have many ready to move to more rural surroundings.

I was just trying to create what I wanted for my family, said Anthony, whose father Jimfounder of The Cliffs Communitiesconsulted on the project. I didnt want to be a full-time farmer. Its a job having a farm with chickens, blueberries and the whole shooting match. I dabbled in it a little bit before I started Riverstead, and kind of came to the determination that a farm should be shared. It actually makes a lot of sense for people to have shared resources.

Getting back to the land was the original idea. But on the heels of a 2020 defined by pandemic lockdowns and disorder in some cities, it became about getting away from something, too. Associate broker Debra Owensby of Blackstream Christies has met Riverstead homeowners from Chicago, Pennsylvania and other far-off locales who had the same reason for relocating to an agrarian community near Travelers Rest.

Debra Owensby (provided).

I said, How did you find this place? All of them said they went online and started Googling. They wanted to get out of urban areas where theres so much unrest, Owensby said. They wanted somewhere they could feel safe and could get back to nature. They started researching and went online, and every one of them found it that way.

Eggs from the chicken coop

Agriculturally based neighborhoods similar to Riversteadknown in some circles as agrihoodsare more of a trend out West, where they operate almost as cooperatives producing farm-to-table fare. Some have become tourist destinations, featuring inns and restaurants. Closer to home, the Serenbe community outside Atlanta is built around a 25-acre farm, and residents at Kiawah River outside Charleston can help manage crops and cattle.

Its a trend coming across the country, and I know Jim and Lucas both did a lot of research on it, Owensby said. Their heart has always been with farming and land. Theyre environmentalists at heart. So theyve been keeping their fingers on this type of thing for a while.

At Riverstead, residents can be as involved as they want to be in the agricultural features that dot the gated community: a grazing meadow, orchards, a vineyard, a free range chicken coop, a garden, and greenhouses. The neighborhood farm is managed by a pair of professionals, Johannes Aartun and Courtney LaCosta, who have years of experience in sustainable, organic and biodynamic farming practices.

I realized a lot of people like the idea of having chickens until they try it, Anthony said. So Im saying, try it, and if you dont want to do it, let Johannes and Courtney do it and just buy from them. Thats what I realized was the home run for the whole dealI can have access to farm-fresh eggs and I can see the chicken that actually laid them, but I dont have to have a hand in it. But I can lend a hand, my kids can learn about where eggs come from, and they can pick them out of the chicken coop.

While the idea of the residents handling all the digging, planting and harvesting is nice, Anthony realized it was also somewhat unrealistic. LaCosta and Aartun lease the Riverstead farm and operate it like a community-supported agricultural program, determining what to raise with input from residents. Lots of people want eggs, Anthony added, so they raised 130 chickens so basically everybody can have a dozen fresh eggs each week.

Anthony said the idea for Riverstead came not from an existing agrihood in the United States, but an eco-resort he visited in South America where locals gathered in an old farmhouse to trade their wares. Farmers brought produce, fishermen brought seafood, and everyone bartered until they got what they needed. And all of it was freshechoing the farm-to-table practices that have become popular among many Americans desiring to know more about where their food comes from.

Anthony bought the 400-acre property in 2017, ultimately carving out 53 homesites that range in size from 2.8 to 5 acres, and starting at $81,500. Vistas vary from the Saluda River to the foothills of the Blue Ridge. Given the renewed emphasis on getting back to nature, Anthony figured he had a desirable communitythen the pandemic hit, and demand soared. By March of 2021, all of Riversteads home sites were sold out.

Ive been just amazed, Owensby said. In basically one year, through nothing but internet marketing, theyve sold the whole development out.

The way things used to be

The saltwater pool is due to be completed by June, the treehouseindeed, Riverstead will have a treehousewill be finished in a few weeks. About 17 custom-built homes are completed or in some stage of construction, with full buildout projected in two years.

Covid kind of pushed everybody to think about what they actually need, given the fact they can work from anywhere, Anthony said. The way I wanted to live didnt really trend in until Covid hit. And then people realized that being out in nature most of the time, and going into the city only for what you need, actually isnt a bad thing.

At the onset of the pandemic, many people suddenly discovered they could work from anywhereincluding near a farm in the foothills north of Greenville. With parks and childrens attractions closed, trails and fields suddenly became more sought-after. With many cities hard-hit by Covid and riled by unrest, the idea of a lifestyle that provided farm-fresh food proved too alluring for some to pass up.

Its about being out there and feeding the chickens, and being part of literally a village in the old-style sense, Owensby said. And I think people are craving that. In this last year where everything became so chaotic and the world felt like it was falling apart, I think people want to get back to a feeling of the way it used to be. I think thats a trend more than anything.

That trend seems certain to continue: Anthony is already working on another agriculturally based community near Greenville.

The lifestyle at Riverstead hasnt been affected by Covid, he said. People started realizing, hey if I need a dozen eggs, all I need is to go to the chicken coop. I dont have to go to the grocery store. Its the same kind of thing with the trails and people getting outdoors and hiking and walking. Theyre just like, This all makes a lot of sense. I have everything I need.
