The Twitter policy that could temporarily censor every single one of your tweets – The Verge

On Tuesday, a noted Palestinian-American journalist reporting live from protests near Jerusalem was suddenly and mysteriously silenced on Twitter with every single tweet replaced by the message @MariamBarghoutis account is temporarily unavailable because it violates the Twitter Media Policy. It was a mistake, the company quickly admitted, and her tweets were quickly restored.

But it turns out that one part of the incident was not a mistake. While Twitter may have taken action on this persons account in error, there actually is one particular situation where Twitter reserves the right to make your tweets disappear. And if you ask me its super, super dumb.

Twitter pointed me to this page and this specific image as an example of the policy, which seems like it could date back as far as October 2017:

There, the Requiring media or profile edits policy reads: If an accounts profile or media content is not compliant with our policies, we may make it temporarily unavailable and require that the violator edit the media or information in their profile to comply with our rules. We also explain which policy their profile or media content has violated.

Or, in plain English, if your profile picture, header image, or other picture you post doesnt meet Twitters standards, Twitter wont just censor that image it may censor your entire account until you fix it.

Why would Twitter need to notify people about a bad image on every single tweet from an author, instead of just omitting the image and perhaps providing an explanation? Over the past several years, weve seen many, many instances of Twitter choosing to place warning labels nearby offensive and damaging content, labels that still allow people to easily view those tweets.

When I raised this question, a Twitter spokesperson would only say that the policy is designed to better inform folks on the actions taken by Twitter. The company declined to say more.

The most generous explanation I can muster is that this is an old, antiquated policy that should have been retired long ago.

Twitter also initially restricted Barghoutis ability to tweet, retweet, follow and like for 12 hours, according to screenshots she provided to The Verge. Its not clear why her account was mistakenly censored to begin with; Twitter couldnt immediately say whether it was a human action or an automated system.

Gavin Williamson in bid to end censorship on campus – expressandstar.com

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson MP

Gavin Williamson said the Government's new bill would stop universities and student unions from "hounding out" speakers whose views they object to.

Announced as part of the Queen's Speech, the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill will place new legal duties on students' unions and universities to ensure free speech - with a regulator able to issue fines for any breaches.

South Staffordshire MP Mr Williamson told the Express & Star: "Freedom of speech is a right in this country, but sadly at our universities there have been some instances where it hasn't been available to all.

"We have an absolute right to articulate our views which others may find objectionable, providing they don't meet the threshold of hate speech or inciting violence.

"We've got to be able to protect that right in order to prevent the chilling effects of censorship on campus.

"Students and staff should always feel they are safe to put forward and debate new ideas, without fear of repercussions, even if these are sometimes controversial and unpopular.

"That's what this bill is going to be delivering.

"Universities should be amazing places where people can share ideas and thoughts.

"We can't be having a situation where student unions or universities decide they don't like a particular view and decide to censor it by hounding out people."

Mr Williamson said he had been written to by a large number of academics thanking him for pushing the legislation.

"What was so sad was that so many of them did not dare put their name and address on the letter because they were so worried about potential repercussions," he said.

"That for me is not the kind of free thinking university system we want to have."

There have been numerous instances in recent years when speakers perceived not to fit in with a left-wing worldview have been no platformed at university campuses.

Former West Midlands MEP Bill Etheridge was once banned from speaking at Sussex University having initially been invited by a body called the Free Speech Association.

Last year Bristol students' union demanded nearly 500 to pay for security at a talk by the Israeli Ambassador, despite charging nothing for a talk by his Palestinian counterpart.

And former Tory Home Secretary Amber Rudd also fell foul of leftists when her talk at the University of Oxford to mark International Womens Day was cancelled after students complained about her role in the Windrush scandal.

Under the legislation, speakers will be able to seek compensation through the courts if they suffer a financial loss from a breach.

Division 1-2 baseball preview: North Andover ready for another run – Boston Herald

If the MIAA eventually decides to make the Division 1A tournament a permanent thing of the past, North Andovers Todd Dulin will be the answer to a trivia question: the last coach to win a Div. 1A baseball title.

The sad part of the decision to put the Div. 1A tourney on ice for the time being is that North Andover has the type of team with the potential to do some serious damage in that type of format.

Its disappointing that they arent going to have one, Dulin said. When we had Sebastian Keane (a Red Sox draft pick who is pitching at Northeastern) two years ago, a lot of the younger pitchers on that team looked up to him and now they are the leaders.

The talented pitching staff will be led by Brett Dunham, Brendan Holland and Ryan Griffin. Also returning for the Scarlet Knights are 1B Andrew Perry, 2B Paul Fernandez, C C.J. Carpentier, SS Derek Fin and 3B Trevor Crosby.

While North Andover raced through the Div. 1A tournament in 2019, St. Marys was doing the same in Div. 2. The Spartans defeated Hopkinton to capture the Div. 2 state title and one of the key pitchers, Aivan Cabral, returns to anchor the rotation. Catcher Colby Magliozzi, P/LF Terence Moynihan and OF Andrew Luciano are back.

Beverly will lean on pitchers Eric DiPiero, Brennan Flint and Cooper Gavin as well as OF Austin Bernard. Masconomet joins Beverly in the Northeastern Conference and coach T.J. Baril is looking for big things from P Erik Sibbach, OF Ethan Cote, SS Aaron Zenus and 1B Sean Moynihan. https://embed.sendtonews.com/oembed/?fk=YKI2p6nA&cid=4407&sound=off&format=json&offsetx=0&offsety=0&floatwidth=400&floatposition=bottom-right&float=on

The Middlesex League always seems to have a say in the Div. 2 North proceedings and this year should be no different. Woburn will be led by a trio of seniors in P Aidan Vining, SS Damon Monks and OF Jon Surrette.

Wakefield will look to SS Zack Kent, P Chris Alden and 1B Dan Hurley. Dan Hirschs Burlington team will be young, but expected to be solid with C Nick Pellegrino as well as pitches Shawn Pinkham and Nick Pye.

Concord-Carlisle could be a factor in the Dual County League. The Patriots return 1B Ryan Grace, OF Nick Coletti and P Roman Ercoli.

In Div. 2 South, defending sectional champion Hopkinton will look to P Josh Fischer, 2B Cam Jerrett, 3B Ron Shamus and OF Conor Kelly to compete in a solid Tri-Valley League. Dighton-Rehoboth returns SS Mason Kulpa. OF Cam Carro and 3B Xavier Botelho, while Bishop Feehan will lean on OF Zach Stephenson, SS Justin Neidel and pitchers Mike Hutchins and Ryan Seaver.

Milton will have two of the better players in the Bay State Conference in P/3B Charles Walker and OF Colin Hoey. Duxbury will rely on P Matt Festa, C Billy Mrowka and SS Ryan Flaherty, while Whitman-Hanson has P/3B Thomas Marshall and SS Danny Kent back.

North Attleboro has ace pitcher Dennis Colleran back as well as outfielder Jared Penta. Canton pitcher Andrew Middleton fired a perfect game in the season-opener and he is joined by SS Steven Burbank and C Sawyer Julier-Albert. Stoughton has pitchers Brady Conlin and Kyle Doolin back along with OF Jake Queeney and C Brandon Mantilla.

With the Div. 1A tournament a memory for now, look for the Catholic Conference to make its presence felt in the Div. 1 South tournament.

BC High possesses high-powered pitching in Shea Sprague and Phil DiBlasi as well as OF Dan Scolaro and C Harry Peters. Catholic Memorial has two pitchers back in Drew DeLucia and Nick DiRito along with SS Chris Bear.

Xaverian is going to be a force in the Catholic Conference race as Gerry Lambert has a lot of talented players back. Ryan Douglas and John Connolly anchor the pitching staff along with 3B Dylan Reilly, C Matt Brinker, SS Liam Foley and 2B Henry Fleckner.

The present and future look very bright in Walpole. The Rebels will look to pitchers Cole Donato, Sam Donovan, Blake Conroy, Matt Bianculli and Alex Hee as well as SS Max Martin, 2B Jake Preto, C Corey Kilroy and OF Jason Finkelstein. Braintree will be very young, but SS Jordan Gorham is one of the tops at his position in the state. Wellesley wont be an easy out as pitchers Matt Lussier and Kyle MacCausland are back with IF Will Glowacky and OF Jackson McChesney.

Franklin will start seven underclassmen and will lean on star catcher/pitcher Jake Fitzgibbbons along with pitchers Jacob Jette and Alfred Mucciarone, 1B Nate Cooke and OF C.J. Jette. Defending Div. 1 state champion Taunton has SS Dan MacDougall back.

Plymouth North has outfielder Nick Durocher and Nate Viscariello, 3B Josh Gomes, 2B Dylan Demotel, SS Joe Morris and P Matt Murphy. Silver Lake will be young, but P/3B Chris Quigley will be one of the top players in the Patriot League.

Norwood should be in the hunt for the Tri-Valley League title as 2B Jason Denehy, SS Rob Wladkowski and P/2B Jake Cropper back.

St. Johns Prep is the favorite in Div. 1 North as pitcher Sam Belliveau, SS D.J. Pacheco and 3B Patrick DAmico are all headed to Div. 1 colleges. Lincoln-Sudbury will rely on 2B Jesse McCullough, SS Connor Peck, P Robbie OConnor and 1B Thomas Rogers return.

Lowell should be one of the top teams in the Merrimack Valley Conference thanks to a deep pitching staff led by Adam Betty, Colin Laliberty, Luke Descheneaux, ONeil Jiminez and Brendan Curran. Andover will be led by C Nolan Schirmer, 1B Anthony Tiberio and 3B Adam Ritter, while Central Catholic will be led by C Matt Maloney and pitchers Kyle Espinola and Ryan Cloutier.

Rinku Sharma: The Internet Marketing Guru’s Journey to Success – Influencive

Rinku Sharma, who goes by Digital Rinku on YouTube has been in the internet marketing game for almost a decade and his channel has amassed over 4.5 lakh views.

The Delhi-based marketer is originally from the district of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. Since his move to this industry he has helped many people in starting a livelihood online and setting up stable passive sources of income.

He comes from humble beginnings and was born into a family where making ends meet was a constant struggle. Very early in his life the financial strain reached a point where his parents had no choice but to separate themselves from their child and send Rinku away to live with his maternal uncle in Palampur.

He reminisces, I mustve been merely 8-9 months old when I started living away from my parents. Getting to see my parents was once a year affair. I used to visit my parents when my schools summer holidays were on.

In 1982, Rinkus father shifted to Delhi in search of a better life, and after he found a job, Rinkus mother and younger sister relocated to Delhi as well.

When Rinku turned 18, he moved out of his uncles place and came to Delhi to live with his parents and lend a hand in their livelihood. He spent his schooldays and college life at Jamia alone and friendless so he could save money.

He and his family used to work in the Meethapur area of Delhi, and had to fill Kachris for almost ten hours to earn wages and get by.

He was able to climb out this dark place through his brains and hardwork.

He had been studious at school and had become proficient in maths. He used to help out his sister in schoolwork and slowly he started teaching more and more kids.

After a while of giving tuitions, he stumbled upon the Golden Key.

This Golden Key was digital marketing. But this key didnt just fall into his lap, and didnt just magically open all doors. He had to work hard sometimes 22 hours in a day to just find the key. And after finding it, he had to search for doors that would open.

When he was contemplating making the switch to this industry, he got unconditional support from his parents who never once tried to hold him back or discourage him.

Rinku Sharma has dedicated his work towards introducing people to greater possibilities, so they dont have to go through the same struggles as he did.

Why there is a rise in virtual marketing office – The Financial Express

Since information technology has been evolving independent of the behemoths who dominate the Internet business, this has led to the rise of data storage using blockchain technology.

By Biswajit Das

Surely, Berners-Lee (inventor of the Internet) did not expect that the internet would one day be controlled by a handful of behemoth corporations like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon who dominate the web and become owners and profit from the data!

Fortunately, the core constituents that built the Internet hardware and software technology as well as bandwidth are not solely in the hands of these behemoths. (There was an attempt by some behemoths to control the bandwidth in cahoots with telcos, which was successfully blocked by Government regulations driven by popular opinion.)

Today, any company with the resources can easily set up web server clusters to handle humongous volumes of data and transactions. Heres how it happens.

Technology To The Fore

Since information technology has been evolving independent of the behemoths who dominate the Internet business, this has led to the rise of data storage using blockchain technology (a by-product of crypto-currency) along with distributed ledger technology. Not to mention revival and evolution of statistical programming (read: AI/ML) computer programming languages like R and Python. On another note, server farms have become commonplace with the easy availability of high-quality hardware and a lot of open source software. Its feasible for large corporations to manage their own large private clouds instead of outsourcing.

All the above developments make a clear case for democratisation of business transactions with decentralised data storage, viz. without any central mediator or marketplace.

Since information technology has been evolving independently of the behemoths who All this will ultimately reduce the dependence on marketplaces which are based on centralised fat servers run by behemoths who make their billions by selling private data to potential advertisers.

Web 3.0

As far as the business Web is concerned, we can expect more peer-to-peer transactions and communications, transparency, opt-in that allows individuals and companies to take ownership of their precious data and transact in their own time.

So, with Web 3.0, will there be any significant difference between private platforms (aka walled gardens) and public platforms (marketplaces)? And how will the marketing function be affected in this process?

But first, lets define what we mean by a Private Platform. Any server cluster which holds the data and manages transactions of an individual enterprise or group (as against an aggregator or marketplace) is a Private Platform or the new walled garden.

Earlier, walled gardens referred to aggregators and marketplaces which would restrict their users access for profit motives. For example, Linkedin would not let you mention your email id in any communication to ensure that you communicate only within Linkedin.

Private platforms always existed, But they were inward-focussed and communicated with internal systems like ERP, CRM, etc. They were not open to their users communicating outside Linkedin.

Both private platforms and public platforms can have similar infrastructure. Both can access humongous server power, technology, bandwidth and reach. Private platforms aggregate data for their own use as against marketplaces who sell data as a business model.

Going forward, private servers will communicate smoothly with external public platforms and most importantly, directly with other private platforms.

The Virtual Marketing Office

With decentralised infrastructure and application platforms replacing todays centralised tech marketplaces, private marketing platforms will become the virtual marketing offices of the future. Controlled by businesses and entities who will own the data, with minimum invasion of privacy and interruptions.

Today, every large marketer faces a serious problem of managing marketing investments because of the multitude of options, each of which requires a specialist. Marketing activities are spread over multiple markets and managed independently by different offices.

To orchestrate the entire set of marketing investments in todays volatile and complex market, large marketing departments need to track their plans and their execution constantly. Tracking requires that all marketing data be available in a single place something thats easier said than done.

Thats where a private marketing platform plays a role by bringing together marketing planning, marketing operations, data visibility and analytics together in a single integrated platform which facilitates virtual collaboration.

Initially, private platforms communicate with internal systems to create a single integrated end-to-end user experience, ensuring that all relevant data is available in a single place.

Going forward, with more private platforms entering the ecosystem, private platforms will start talking to other private platforms as well as public platforms, relying more on peer-to-peer distributed transaction ledgers rather than large marketplaces and aggregators.
