CBI tells govt to take steps to monitor social media

New Delhi, Jan 14 (DHNS) : With the growing misuse of social media to create trouble, the CBI has recommended that the government should take steps to ''patrol and monitor'' social networking sites and develop protocols for collection of information and intelligence from the public. PTI File Photo. With the growing misuse of social media to create trouble, the CBI has recommended that the government should take steps to patrol and monitor social networking sites and develop protocols for collection of information and intelligence from the public.

The CBI recommendations, made at the Directors General of Police conference in November 2013, were made public recently.

The suggestions came at a time the security establishment had run-ins with social media operators on providing information, which the government has sought from them.

In the presentation, the CBI has identified a series of challenges posed by social media, including rumour mongering, instigating riots, flash protests, harassing women and children, disseminating false propaganda through fake accounts and creating fake accounts of people and organisations.

It cited the exodus of northeast youth from Bangalore and the circulation of a fake video during Muzaffarnagar riots among other things in this regard.

With India estimated to have an internet population of 200 million, the CBI is of the view that there is a need to set up round-the-clock monitoring mechanisms at central and state levels.

The government should also bring out a policy for using social media for outreach. The CBI said the government should also develop protocols for use of social networks for collection of information and intelligence from the public.

Build capacities to patrol and monitor social media. Have working relationship with social media providers, the CBI had said.

The agency also pointed out how technology was used to turn the tables on criminals. It cited the practices adopted by police in Toronto and New York for investigative purposes and identified 10 major cities of India using social media for citizen engagement in traffic regulation as one of the best practices adopted in the country.

The CBI also commended the social media monitoring cells operated by police forces of Delhi and Mumbai.

Fraudsters create 40 Patience Jonathan Facebook, Twitter accounts

The First Lady, Patience Jonathan, is clearly a victim of identity theft (or impersonation) on social media. An online investigation by our correspondent on Monday showed that 16 Facebook accounts already bear her name, photograph and basic profile, though she had yet to register her presence on the social networking site.

As a result of this, many regular visitors to the fake accounts desiring to meet with Mrs. Jonathan on Facebook have been deceived into believing they are communicating with her.

Posing as Patience on Facebook, one of the unknown fraudsters involved in this scam has been using various tactics to lure unsuspecting members of the public to visit the page.

Additional checks by iPUNCH show that the fraudster has been striving on the Facebook page, which she/he opened with the name Patience Faka Ebele Jonathan on September 27, 2013, to bait unsuspecting Nigerians with promises of employment.

I will give out jobs to some youths to thank God for what He has done for me and in my husbands life, the fraudster wrote in the First Ladys name.

Unfortunately many unemployed people fell for the trick. They trooped to the page, urging the Presidents wife to fulfill her promise

Your Excellency, we thank you for your caring attitude. Please make us happy and you will find happiness. Thanks and stay alive, one Rasla Raham commented on the page.

As the fraudsters continue to fool some people on Facebook, there is a need to find out how many victims they have duped on the social networking site.

While some of the impersonators have perfected their plan for various nefarious activities online, a handful of them are still struggling to do so.

A glance at some of the fake Facebook accounts opened in Patiences name shows some discrepancies in her basic information, which is already in the public domain.

Where are the jobs in 2014? Big data, mobile apps, social networks

A new category of jobs will be created in 2014 due to the whole social networking blast, say experts.

A strong message for freshers

This is the big job story of 2014.

While conventional jobs in manufacturing, banking, financial, services, insurance, hospitality and retail sectors will see flat to moderate uptick, the new trend that is likely to create a flutter this year will be the social networks and mobile apps space.

In fact, the year began with a bang for Little Eye Labs, a little-known (only till January 8) Bangalore-based 18-month old start-up operating in the mobile app space, when it was taken over by Facebook for Rs 90 crore and offered its 7 founders an opportunity to work with the social networking giant at their Menlo Park headquarters in California.

Companies will want to capitalise on this explosive growth in social networking. This could be to do with marketing and sales jobs where people never realised how they could use these networks for maximising revenues, says Joseph Devasia, Managing Partner, Antal International Network, a global executive recruiting agency.

Devasia firmly believes that the sector is headed for an explosive growth as the year wears on.

Social networks will be huge job creators, says Devasia.

Head of Purple Leap, an organisation that makes students employment ready, Amit Bansal, also sees a big opportunity in big data, a term that has become fashionable since mid-2013. Big data will be in huge demand, he says. The number of jobs that will be created in this space, he cautions, may not be as big in volume terms, as jobs that one sees in the IT and ITeS sectors.

On the IT side android developers who have experience in UX (user experience) rather than UI (user interface) will be in great demand, he observes.
