Not only is Israel involved in a military offensive against militants in the Gaza Strip, it is also waging an information war via social media sites. The IDF has been extremely active on twitter since the beginning of operation Pillar of Defense and has also released a series of striking poster images which have clearly been designed with Facebook in mind - highlighting the importance of social media in winning the battle for global public opinion Israel #39;s operation, named Pillar of Defense, began when it assassinated a top Hamas commander in an airstrike, after which The IDF issued a tweet on social media site Twitter which said that it recommended Hamas operatives didn #39;t show their faces above ground in the coming days. Militants the al-Qassam Brigades tweeted back saying that Israel had opened the gates of hell. The IDF has been using its Twitter feed to put out real time news on the conflict, including links to videos and photos and even a list of reasons why Israel has the right to defend itself. Both sides are utilising Twitter #39;s hash tagging facility which allows users to create a topic-based feed of information using key words. The IDF has also created a range of posters with slogans that are easily shareable across social networking-site Facebook, which means the latest statistics and updates on the threat to Israel can be published within a matter of minutes. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter could face financial penalties under a Coalition plan to curb online bullying of children.
It has suggested setting up a children's e-safety commissioner with the power to monitor online content and seek the removal of harmful material.
However, given most large social media websites are based overseas and therefore not subject to Australian law, the scheme would rely on "cooperative regulation" between the government and affected companies.
The policy would require the websites to have a clear complaints process, but also allow the commissioner to issue a take-down notice if there was a clear problem with the online content which the complainant was unable to resolve.
"This is not about internet censorship, this is not about big brother," Opposition communications spokesman Malcolm Turnbull told reporters in Sydney.
"What this will do is give parents and teachers and carers and children the tools to ensure that bullying and harassment is no more acceptable on a smart phone than it is in a playground."
The Coalition plans to consult the affected websites in developing the idea, including what material would be considered likely to "cause harm to an Australian child".
If there was a breach of the cooperative regulations, the companies could face fines or other penalties.
But it is unclear whether companies such as Facebook or Twitter would be willing to sign up to such a scheme.
The Government and police have , accusing it of being arrogant and not responding to the legitimate concerns of Australian authorities.

Coalition floats plan to curb online bullying
Sydney, Nov 15 (ANI): Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are playing a key role in the reporting of sexual abuse and assaults, experts have said.
Australian police forces were early adopters of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, regularly using them to publish appeals for help and access potential witnesses and tip-offs.
Experts say that social media is also playing a key role in the reporting of crime, particularly sex offences where victims may be ashamed or afraid to speak face-to-face with authorities.
Carolyn Worth, manager of the Centre Against Sexual Assault's (CASA) southeast branch, says young people in particular feel more comfortable disclosing incidents via social media.
"It has been our experience that social media has assisted people to disclose sexual assaults that they would not feel comfortable discussing either in person or over the telephone," the Herald Sun quoted her, as saying.
"It has been amazing how many people have accessed our websites and social media and have disclosed sexual assault and asked for information and assistance," she added.
According to the paper, police officials said that the social media has also revolutionized the way authorities fight crime.
"Having the ability to use Facebook and Twitter has changed the way some cases are run," the report quoted one police officer, as saying. (ANI)
