Election memes take over social networks as results emerge

As the 2013 elections drew to a close, memes and hashtags take over social networking sites that reflect on how netizens feel about the initial results of the midterm elections.

As the initial results showed senatorial hopeful Dick Gordon at the cusp of breaking the Magic 12, Twitter users decided to take matters into their own hands by creating the hashtag #IpasokSiDick. Twitter users also reacted to Grace Poe's lead in the senatorial race, and created the hashtag #WagPoeWagPoe. Both Twitter hashtags became top trending topics in the Philippines on Monday evening.

"So if #ipasoksidick is trending now tomorrow hopefully it will be #pasoknasidickJ," a tweet from the @UniversityQuote said.

Many users also went to Twitter to vent their frustration on the initial result of the elections. One Twitter user tweeted "Luto ang eleksyon, sunog ang nanalo" referring to Nancy Binay.

"Grabe! May mga nag text sa akin, di na daw nila shinade yung #5 kasi maitim na daw yun! Grabe! Ang hard nun! #ouch #eleksyon2013,"said other bogus account still referencing Nancy Binay.

Reaction to Nancy Binay's current ranking also did not escape the ire of users on Facebook. One of the most shared photo on Facebook shows a picture of sitting incumbent senators Miriam Defensor-Santiago, Pia Cayetano and re-electionist senator Jamby Madrigal saying "You can't sit with us!" to Nancy Binay, who seemingly appears to be asking for acceptance in the Senate, an imitation from a well-known film Mean Girls. The photo has obtained more than a thousand likes and shares on the said social networking site.

Another meme used the shocked face of the Filipino comedian Vice Ganda, who exaggerated the expression, "oh my god", now used in an election parody with a statement, "4th pa si Nancy? Huumaygaaad!".

Moreover, an apathetic face of the fierce Miriam Defensor-Santiago was posted showing reassurance to the netizens that she will take care of the senators who won without the kind of wisdom and understanding expected from them as the voice of the people. "Sasabuninko kayo!"was even included in the meme.

Among all the senatorial candidates, Nancy Binay had acquired the most number of memes both on Facebook and Twitter. Proving that Filipinos' way of expressing their sense of humor is inevitable hence the continuous spread of memes as a new style of voicing out their criticism and judgment.

HC directs Govt to clarify whether students below 13 can join social networking sites

New Delhi, May 13 : The Government today informed the Delhi High Court today that government departments should comply with the ISO 27001 for usage of Facebook and other social networking sites else officers will have to face Civil and Criminal Liability for Non Compliance.

In an affidavit filed before a bench headed by Justice BD Ahmed, the Additional Solicitor General(ASG) Mr Rajiv Mehra said that Social Networking sites do not permit children below 13 years of age for opening accounts or assessing their websites.

Affidavit further says such sites generally verify the age and obtained the permission of the parents of the children below 13 years of the age.

On the contrary terms of the Facebook do not permit opening of accounts by Children below 13 years and for Google Plus agreements consent of parent required for the children from age 13 to 18.

Seeing the discrepancy in the Government the Court directed Government Advocate Mr Sumit Puskarna to filed fresh affidavit by May 22.

The lawyers for Facebook Inc and Google Inc- both US based companies- were present in the court today and sought one week time to file their reply.

Earlier, in another case no one from both US companies of Google and Facebook appeared in the court as the American companies informed the Indian Government that such proceedings are against US laws which protects freedom of speech.

The case pertains to a Public Interest Litigation(PIL) filed by Govindacharya who demanded recovery of all direct and indirect taxes from the social networking sites operating from foreign countries and evading paying of taxes here.

Govindacharya through his lawyer Virag Gupta also sought protection of data being taken by the US companies and demanded that government offices should be banned from using social networking sites as there is high risk of crucial data to be transferred to the foreign land.
