Report: Marketing firm may buy Klout for $100 million

Apparently Klout is popular.

The website that provides social media users with a measure of their influence is close to being acquired by a social marketing company for $100 million, according to published reports.

The supposed buyer, Lithium Technologies, helps major brands use social media to grow their businesses. It will acquire Klout for a mixture of cash and stock in a deal worth somewhere in the low nine figures, according to Re/code. That would put the deal somewhere north of $100 million, a price The Wall Street Journal also reported.

Re/code, which cited unnamed sources, cautioned that the deal had been signed but not closed.

Klout and Lithium are both privately held companies based in San Francisco.

Klout users can see their relative influence on the Web ranked on a scale from zero to 100. The calculation is based on how many people their social media posts reach, the people they reach and the people that interact with them.

Klout also offers perks to users with particular levels of influence. At present, some users are being offered a free ebook, while others have been offered coupons for fast food, drinks and access to events. The hope is that these influencers will tweet about the products and provide the companies exposure.

It may be working. Klouts website lists scores of tweets related to the promotions, and the company says it has delivered 1.25 million perks.

Klout has just revamped its website to suggest content that it thinks will be attractive to peoples followers. Its intended to help users build their brand and connect with more users, and in turn lead to a closer relationship between Klout and its influential users.

Klout claims to have scored half-a-billion profiles.

Live @ SMX West: Social Meets Search Where Are We Now, Where Are We Going?

All savvy marketers know that social media is now hugely important to the success of online marketing campaigns. But how exactly do search marketing and social media efforts interact and impact each other? Some studies of search engine ranking factors, such as the Searchmetrics 2013 SEO Ranking Factors and the Moz 2013 Search Ranking Factors Survey suggest that social factors are very significant.

But then you have Googles Matt Cutts going on record saying we dont use Twitter or Facebook social signals to rank pages.

Contradictory advice? Perhaps or perhaps not. Admittedly, these are somewhat apples-to-oranges comparisons, but they do illustrate the confusion regarding how search and social media marketing efforts work together. Thats in part why we created the Social Meets Search: Where Are We Now; Were Are We Going? session at SMX West.

On this panel, representatives from search engines and social networks will discuss how social signals and data impact ranking and new sources of content. Theyll also discuss how consumers make use of search engines devoted to social content. Youll learn from the experts how social is influencing search, becoming part of search and how marketers can ride the social wave for SEO success.

Social Meets Search: Where Are We Now; Were Are We Going? is one of more than 60 sessions at SMX West, March 11-13 in San Jose, the three-day conference devoted to all aspects of search, online and social media marketing. Check out the agenda for SMX West and register now!
