Rand Paul fires warning shot at Jeb Bush

WASHINGTON - Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul has fired his first political shot at former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Bush announced Tuesday that he was "actively exploring" a run for president in 2016. Hours later, people who were on Google doing "Jeb Bush" searches saw an ad from RANDPAC, Paul's political action committee.

The ad appeared right under stories that popped up on Bush.

"Join a movement working to shrink government. Not grow it," the ad said.

So, although Paul has said he won't make a decision on a White House bid until March or April, the senator's PAC clearly decided not to leave Bush's day unanswered.

TIME magazine had a screen grab of the ad:

Consider it a Paul warning shot across Bush's bow.

The Paul camp has a regular presence on the web, said RANDPAC spokesman Sergio Gor.

"RANDPAC routinely runs various advertisements across various platforms," he said in an e-mail.

Anthony Weiner praises Rand Paul – CNN.com

By Ashley Killough, CNN

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- Anthony Weiner thinks Rand Paul is playing it smart.

The former Democratic congressman from New York, who resigned in 2011 amid a sexting scandal, offered up some 2016 insight Friday, saying the Kentucky Republican senator is wise to make privacy concerns a big part of his potential presidential platform.

"Paul's strategy could put him in a great place in a Republican primary," Weiner wrote in a column for Business Insider.

Paul has been the most vocal opponent in Congress against the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance programs involving phone metadata collection.

He filed a now-stalled lawsuit against the Obama administration earlier this year, and he voted against an NSA reform package last month because he felt it didn't go far enough in tweaking the agency.

(He took some heat, however, from some in the anti-NSA community for his vote because the measure ultimately failed to advance.)

Privacy issues have become a staple in Paul's stump speeches on the 2014 campaign trail, where he was known to hold up his cell phone in the air and declare that what Americans do on their phones is "none of the government's damn business."

Rand Paul is Already Running an Ad Against Jeb Bush

TIME Politics 2016 Election Rand Paul is Already Running an Ad Against Jeb Bush Updated: Dec. 16, 2014 7:20 PM Sen. Rand Paul speaks with the news media after delivering a speech at the Detroit Economic Club on Dec. 6, 2013 in Detroit, Michigan. Bill PuglianoGetty Images That didn't take long

The 2016 Republican primary battle is up and runningat least on Google.

Hours after former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush announced he would actively explore a run for the White House, the political action committee for Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, who appears certain to announce a bid for the Oval Office in the coming months, took out a Google search ad on his name, with a not-so-subtle dig at the more moderate Republican.

Join a movement working to shrink government. Not grow it, the ad states, with a link to RandPAC, Pauls longstanding federal leadership committee, and a page asking supporters to give their email address and zip code to Stand With Rand. Bush announced Tuesday he would form a similar leadership committee in January. His Facebook announcement didnt include any attempts to gather data on potential donors or supporters.

Pauls PAC recently hired on Texas digital strategist Vincent Harris and his firm, Harris Media, in preparation for a 2016 run. Harris had also done work for another likely 2016 contender, Sen. Ted Cruz.

UPDATE: Later Tuesday, RandPAC added a second ad to its digital buy, implicitly attacking Bushs strong defense of the Common Core education standards. We need leaders who will stand against common core, the search ad stated, with a link to Pauls political action committee.
