Rand Paul busy on campaign trail for Senate Republicans
WASHINGTON Of the several Texans eyeing the White House, the one keeping the busiest campaign schedule ahead of the midterm elections is one who moved to Kentucky, Sen. Rand Paul.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry rushed back from Europe when another Ebola case erupted in Dallas, but soon enough was off to Iowa. Sen. Ted Cruz has been on the road plenty, within Texas and in a number of other states.
Paul, son of a former Houston-area congressman and a product of Baylor University in Waco, is the pacesetter.
Weve been in 32, 33 states, he said Friday. This week Ive been in five different states. Ive been in, lets see, Illinois, Ohio, Iowa, New York and today, Georgia.
He was speaking by phone from Atlanta, after stumping for businessman David Perdue, whos locked in a tight Senate battle with centrist Democrat Michelle Nunn. This was the weekend Perdue turned attention to drumming up tea party support, bringing in Paul on Friday and Cruz on Saturday.
Cruz agreed to stump at two rallies with Perdue and Gov. Nathan Deal. Deal has a tough race, too, against former President Jimmy Carters grandson, Jason Carter. And both could use some excitement of the sort a national tea party darling can provide.
Both Cruz and Paul fit that bill.
Both have stumped with congressional challenger Marilinda Garcia in New Hampshire, though only Paul has appeared there with Senate nominee Scott Brown, who pitches himself as a temperate, abortion rights-loving New England centrist.
Both are conferring tea party support to non-tea-partiers such as Perdue. Cruz offered a potentially crucial blessing earlier this month to Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts, for instance.
But Paul has, by all accounts, gone far beyond expectations. Back home in Kentucky, hes credited with tamping down tea party unrest that threatened to undermine Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnells re-election.
