Digital trends to look out for in 2015 (2)

Adeola Kayode

This year presents huge possibilities and it is only limited by the uncertainties of the coming general elections. Last week, I highlighted the major trends that may shape 2015 and we examined the following: Connected citizens and the 2015 elections; branded content marketing; All things mobile and beautiful; and Internet Terrorism. This is the final part:

Radio on steroids

As most people sing themselves hoarse about the waning impact of traditional media, the radio will continue to power itself into the media content space in Africa. With radio having the most extensive spread across the nation at about 90 per cent, metropolitan cities will still maintain their radio-enabled smartphones to stay connected with their cities and the attendant happening around it.

The integration of Internet radio applications is ensuring that the local radio audience is becoming global. Most stations are already incorporating Facebook and Twitter into programming. They are also releasing presenters to infuse their personalities into radio programming in order to build a following and to engage their target audience on social media.

Radio stations now use their pages to transform the age-long culture of private listening by individuals into a collective community that communicates across digital and traditional media.

Radio may not die anytime soon. It has transformed from the traditional one-way platform into a two-dimensional medium with the use of telephones, Skype, citizen reporting applications, Twitter, Facebook and websites. The effective use of social media for journalism has become an essential part of journalists toolkit. Radio will soar higher this year.

Digital synergy as brands connect

If you want to go fast, go alone and If you want to go far, take someone along. The Nigerian terrain is no simple feat and startups, businesses and brands that recognise this are leveraging on one anothers strength to grow.

Mobile application developers are seeking partnerships with telecommunication companies to ensure their applications are either taken over like AfriNolly or they are made partners like PriceCheck, Okada Books and MedAfrica. This will help them to leapfrog years of marketing in order to get people to download the applications.
