Destino Free Party ft Art Department + More – Ibiza Spotlight

Next up we have a party tomorrow, on Thursday 18th July, with Art Department, Guy Gerber and Tensnake and Destino resident Kim Ann Foxman. Entry is free, all you need to do is sign up for the Destino newsletter be emailing this address-info@destinoibiza.com.

Things kick off at 5pm, continuing on until midnight, with live performances from the Italian dance company 'nu'art'. The venue is located outside of Ibiza Town, around Talamanca. For more details on the venue head here.

Days Out: Ibiza Jeep Safari – Ibiza Spotlight

Theres a rather lovely true story to this article for Ibiza Jeep Safari managed to turn around one couples opinion of the island, right at the end of their two week holiday.

Ibiza Jeep Safari is a multi-lingual company (guides speak English, German, Dutch and of course Spanish) and with a fleet of open top four wheel drive vehicles, uplift their guests from various locations (see Quick Facts below for specifics) and then rendezvous in the middle of the island, for the safari to commence.

At point of rendezvous for all the jeeps, two things happen. Firstly you are assigned to a jeep where the guide speaks your language fluently. The second thing is a comprehensive safety brief and a hint of the journey you are about to experience. Confidence and anticipation is high!

Ibiza Jeep Safari has a range of tours but I elected to jump aboard their 6 hour North Island tour, including a lunch break (covered in the cost) and a swim at one of the most famous beaches in the North.

Starting off, our own guide, Karolina proved herself to be passionate and well informed about Ibiza. To my delight, as I am renowned as a nervous passenger, she also drove extremely well and was considerate of our comfort.

We kept largely to the dust tracks of the island known locally as caminos - with stops so we could see and learn about the vast range of vegetation on the island. The views were spectacular and the sense of remoteness, of being on safari, was wonderfully authentic.

With me in my vehicle was a lovely family from the UK. The parents were fans of Mallorca and mainland Spain but having booked for two weeks in San Antonio, had found themselves a little disappointed with Ibiza. They wanted to know the real Ibiza and had booked the tour in hopes of seeing it before they left

Review: ANTS, 13th July – Ibiza Spotlight

Scuttling up to the front door of Ushuaa, I could see that as usual they had put that bit of extra effort in straight from the off.On the big screens, animated ants carried Polaroids of Deetron, Andrea Oliva, Uner, Los Suruba and the rest of the line-up. A black passageway loomed before me, inviting me to the coolest cult on the island- the United ANTSColony. After tunnelling my way throughI saw the layout was very different from what we normally see at this venue. The DJ booth had been shifted to the backand the whole main stage and pool were neglected. This created an intimate after party vibe where the new booth was, and took away some of the show of this normally lavish venue, now seeming like a true pool party.

One of the highlights was Radio Slave. He played a mix of unknowns, also dropping in stompers like I Got the Powerand lots of groove-filled vocal-heavy numbers. He provided the perfect transition to Deetrons set, speeding up the pace and getting heavierbut staying soulful as his set came to an end. Soil-shaking bass echoed across the smaller pool, and shook the decking as the crowd-- quirkily categorised as workers and soldiers- marched to the beat.

Deetron was next. Mixing vinyl, he rarely looked up from the decks, constantly focussed. He set the pace and indeed the bar for his set opening with Leon Vynehalls Brother. He played his own tracks Can I Love You Moreand Call Out Your Nameand also played a huge tribute to soulful piano house, with uplifting tracks like NY Finest Do You Feel Me. The rubber ant legs that hung from black drapes above us trembled and the crowd whooped and clapped as Deetron closed with the huge favourite Starblazer.

Suddenly the main stage was lit up by pyrotechnics. The screen was emblazoned with the words Andrea Oliva, causing everyone to scatter excitedly to the main stage. The huge swarm of people running together created a hive mentality which is what this party is all about- united in a genuine love and enjoyment for the artists, with enough performance to show effort and enthusiasm, but not so much that the most important thing- the music- loses significance. After playing a wicked tech-y set (reminiscent of Loco Dice) with lots of drops and deviating bass lines, Oliva playedhis remix of Luciano's Rise of Angelbefore slipping into Inner Citys Good Life. He moved seamlessly between feel-good soul sounds and tech-house and had the crowd gaining momentum all the way through to midnight.

This workers party has definitely become a recognised event in its own right. I saw one of the best crowdsand had one of the best nights of the summer so far. If ANTSis going to be like this every Saturday, Ill be soldiering on to Ushuaa each week to be part of this colony. You can buy your tickets for ANTSand to stay at Ushuaa Hotel on Spotlight.

Gecko Jewellery, Ibiza – Ibiza Spotlight

Gecko jewellery?

We knew we were in for a treat before we even arrived. Everyone to whom I had mentioned Phil (Head of VIP for Ibiza Spotlight) and I were off to meet Reinhard Maier, Master Goldsmith of Gecko Jewellery had nothing but praise and appreciation for his work.

Reinhard is a discreet understated gentleman. As his name gives away, he was born and raised in Germany. His own Father was a Goldsmith and the work fascinated the son. Following the tradition, Reinhard undertook his apprenticeship in 1970. In 1974 however, the World changed for the aspiring jeweller and he found himself having to change tact to survive. He moved into studying as a dental technician. Nonetheless the allure of working with gold persisted and finally in 1987, he attained the accolade of Master Goldsmith.

With the support of his wife, whom he had married in 1978, Reinhard opened his own business in Germany, turning his passion into a successful business.

Across the years however, Reinhard and his wife discovered Ibiza and fell in love with the island. After nearly twenty years of success in Germany they decided to relocate.

Enter the Gecko, synonymous with Reinhards work and style.

Inspired by Ibiza and finding his creativity rekindled, Reinhard adopted the Gecko as a symbol of his appreciation, incorporating it into his now famous pieces.

This inspiring and vibrant Foundation is dedicated to uniting the global dance music community, and encouraging people who love dance music to make positive changes in the world. Supporting both international and local projects, Last Night a DJ Saved my Life has created partnerships within the dance music industry, and with various charities, to raise awareness and much-needed funding for environmental and humanitarian causes.

Last year saw the creation of The Ibiza Heart Projecta collaboration between the Last Night a DJ Saved my Life Foundation and clubs and promoters in Ibiza. Resulting in more than 31,000 being raised over seventeen events at We LoveSpace, the benefits of those funds have been far-reaching and life-changing to the many charities they were distributed to.

These include House the House Community Projectwhich engaged over 200 young DJs and 100 volunteers in a national competition with the winner making history alongside Fat Boy Slim at the Houses of Parliament. In addition to this, also the financing of a vehicle dedicated to collecting rubbish around the forests and beaches of Ibiza, and approximately 200 one-to-one music therapy sessions.

Further afield, funds were distributed to provide care and education to destitute children in South India, plus the digging of a well for the Ramapuram Yanad Tribe in India which will provide 1000 people with water for ten years, and cleft pallet operations for eighteen kids in a conflicted area of the Philippines.

Many more charities have benefitted through the work and dedication of Last Night a DJ Saved my Life, details of which can be found by following this link
