Hillary Clinton dazzles crowd at San Jose State

SAN JOSE -- At a restaurant just off the San Jose State University campus Thursday evening, a young waitress, exasperated by the sudden crush of customers ordering salads and a white wine, paused from her exertions to explain why she was so slammed.

"They're all going to see Hillary Clinton," she said, sizing up the room.. "Everywhere you look, it's the same demographic."

A mostly middle-aged, conspicuously Caucasian crowd of women filled the university's Event Center for Clinton's appearance as part of Unique Lives & Experiences.

That was the demographic that was clearly top of mind for the former first lady, senator and secretary of state.

Looking by turns confident in her message and comfortable in her own skin, Clinton sounded like someone ready for her next campaign.

She could have been referring to her own presidential ambitions in 2016 when she declared early on, "All that most women need is a fighting chance to prove themselves."

Compared to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries crowd she had squared off with earlier that day in Las Vegas, where a woman threw a shoe at her head (it missed), this felt like a Lilith Fair love fest with shoulder pads and sensible shoes.

In the carnivallike walk-up outside the arena, protesters held aloft signs that said "Clinton: Benghazi blood on her hands." A man taunted people streaming into the building, saying, "Go on, drink the Kool-Aid. Slurp it down."

Clinton confined most of her remarks to women's struggles, a word she invoked half a dozen times.

She also talked about her mother's plight as an abandoned child and several times quoted Eleanor Roosevelt, one of the great avatars of the women's movement.

Hillary Clinton Wrote Her Upcoming Memoir by Hand in Her Attic

Clinton's fifth solo book, which the already best-selling author describes as a "compelling and personal narrative" of her tenure as America's top diplomat, will be in bookstores June 10, Time.com reports.

And Clinton, who resides in Upstate New York, says, she wrote it longhand, on paper, and in "in my little old Chappaqua farmhouse, in the attic where I hang out."

"If you did see my study at home, you would think it was an episode from Hoarders," she reportedly told the Association of American Publishers last month. "The notes, the pages, the drafts it is amazing."

Readers won't need a PhD in foreign relations to dive in, a Clinton adviser tells PEOPLE.

"It's not geared toward foreign-policy wonks," the source says. "She's been writing it with an eye toward the regular reader."

The book is destined to stir another cloud of will-she-or-won't-she speculation about her intentions to enter the 2016 presidential race. "I'm thinking about it ... but I am going to continue to think about it for a while," she said Tuesday. "I'm not going to make a decision for a while, because I'm actually enjoying my life. I'm actually having fun."

The title of her upcoming book is a work-in-progress, but The Scrunchie Chronicles, a suggestion from a Washington Post reader contest, hasn't been ruled out.

"That actually is a keeper," the well-traveled former Secretary of State, U.S. Senator and First Lady say, adding the entry's subtitle: "One Hundred Twelve Countries and It's Still All About My Hair."

Hillary Clinton, addressing the annual Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries convention at Mandalay Bay Thursday, knew she would be following in the footsteps of George W. Bush, who spoke at the convention two years ago, but she was surprised to join the former president as the target of a shoe attack.

A few minutes into her opening remarks to the crowd of more than 1,000, a woman with long platinum blond hair threw multiple objects at Clinton. Several people in the audience saw papers thrown, and Clinton had to dodge at least one projectile near her head.

Clinton, the former secretary of state and presumed Democratic front-runner for the 2016 presidential nomination, was momentarily startled, and at first wondered aloud if it had been a bat.

The woman did not yell anything out, and immediately walked briskly to the ballroom exit.

Clinton was unharmed and handled the situation with aplomb, quickly getting back on track.

"That is not the way democracy works," Clinton said as she fielded apologies and questions Thursday from Jerry Simms, the outgoing chairman of the host Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries.

"People bring their beliefs and their concerns to the table, and work them through," Clinton said.

Meanwhile, a woman was taken into federal custody after admitting she threw the shoe. She didn't say why she did it.

"Is that somebody throwing something at me?" Clinton said after the object flew past her on the stage at the Mandalay Bay resort. "Is that part of Cirque de Soleil?"

Most in the audience of more than 1,000 people understood the reference to the popular series of Las Vegas Strip shows featuring acrobats, magic and whimsy.

"My goodness, I didn't know that solid waste management was so controversial," Clinton laughed. "Thank goodness she didn't play softball like I did."

Brian Spellacy, U.S. Secret Service supervisory special agent in Las Vegas, said the woman in custody was being questioned and would face criminal charges. Spellacy declined to identify the woman.

Spellacy and a spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden said it wasn't immediately clear what charges she would face.

Hillary Clinton wraps up tour in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- The former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is wrapping up a five-city speaking tour and everywhere she goes people want to know if she is going to run for president in 2016. However, she's not spilling the beans.

An excited crowd greeted Clinton as she spoke at San Jose State University. Her focus was mostly on women and the need for equality.

"All most women need is a fighting chance to prove themselves," said Clinton.

The predominately female audience listened intently as Clinton said women still make 16 percent less than men in America. But the one question on everyone's mind was finally asked during the informal Q&A session.

The host, Larry Stone, said to Clinton, "If there is a major announcement you'd like to make regarding your future&"

Clinton hasn't made any announcements about her future political plans, including a run for the presidency in 2016, but there are those who don't want to see it happen, including a woman who threw a shoe at Clinton during her speech in Las Vegas earlier on Thursday.

In San Jose, those for and against Clinton were outside the event center tonight.

"If she is not stopped and challenged now, this is the first in a long line of betrayals," said Don Grundmann from the Constitution Party of California.

"It's time, it's past time that we have a woman take control and let's get it done," said Judy Pipkin from Ready For Hillary.

Clinton is expected to have earned as much as $1 million for these speaking engagements.
