Letter: On integrity in reporting – Daily Herald

A recent letter assault on the integrity of Daily Herald reporting began by questioning the integrity of the "high-minded" Managing Editor for Opinion, ("Newspaper's 'integrity' often missing in reports," Your Views, April 24). The letter went on to question reporting on the "wholly disproven 'Russian collusion' hoax," as well as a front-page headline "Scope of Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' law expanded."

To the best of my knowledge, the "Russian collusion" hoax was not disproven by right-wing writers such as Fox News analyst Gregg Jarrett with his 2018 book "The Russia Hoax: The Illicit Scheme to Clear Hillary Clinton and Frame Donald Trump." On the contrary, according to the following October 9, 2020, Factcheck Post: President Trump and his supporters on social media are citing unverified "Russian intelligence" from 2016 as evidence that Hillary Clinton "was behind the entire Russian collusion hoax." But that so-called intelligence is largely a reflection of publicly available information at the time. Federal investigations since then have documented multiple links between Trump associates and individuals tied to the Russian government.

To his credit, the writer was correct in saying that the phrase "Don't Say Gay" is nowhere in the Florida law. Nonetheless, the Parental Rights and Education Act (HB 1557) is commonly known among Floridians, as well as by other news organizations, by that much more descriptive phrase.

Based on my more than 50 years of reading the Herald, with the rare exception of some readers' comments, I have yet to see the newspaper publish claims that are patently false.

Does Biden have an in-party problem when it comes to age? – KEYE TV CBS Austin

For President Joe Biden, will it be a simple walk in the park to win the Democratic nomination this time or will his age, currently 80 and the oldest president in history, hurt him?

He took jabs at his own longevity this weekend.

But not everyone is as amused, including Democrat voters -- 51% of whom in a recent NBC News poll said they dont want Biden on the ballot, almost half citing his age as a major reason.

ABC News spoke to voters who supported Biden in the past, about their current concerns.

You voted for him in 2020. What gives you pause if youre having some pause? The voter replied, Well, obviously, age.

Although that doesnt mean they wont still vote for him, suggested another voter.

What do you like about Joe Biden? The response, Uh, that hes not Trump.

Trump, who's not much younger at age 76, is also trying to paint Biden as too old.

It could be one reason Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., hardly considered a "mainstream" Democrat, is polling at 19 percent in this early stage, primary challenge of Biden.

Although Kennedy, nor Marianne Williamson, another Biden opponent, may get the chance to debate Biden after the DNC announced it wont hold any debates in the 2024 primaries.

Well, I think its troubling if we dont have debates, said Kennedy. At this point in history there are so many Americans that believe our democracy is broken, that the system is rigged against them.

In an interview, Williamson said shes "disappointed, certainly, because I believe in democracy. I believe that the political parties should stay out of the issue until the primary voters have weighed in. She added, I dont think the DNC should be dictating from on high that they will try to invisibilize any other candidates. I believe in the process of democracy.

And just because the party tries to clear a path for a particular candidate --like in 1992 with George H. W. Bush or on 2016 with Hillary Clinton -- doesnt mean voters wont want to see who else is out there.

Joe Biden, Bill and Hillary Clinton Gifted Extremely Rare Irish Whiskey – Whiskey Raiders

A group of extremely notable politicians gathered in Belfast, Ireland, earlier this month for the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

To celebrate, Irish whiskey brand Kirker Greer created six bottles of a 25-year-old blended whiskey named The Spirit of Agreement and gifted it to six influential politicians who were visiting Belfast: U.S. President Joe Biden, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, U.S. Special Envoy to Northern Ireland Joe Kennedy and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

This is a monumental occasion in Northern Ireland and it made sense as a Belfast-based blending company to celebrate this 25th anniversary with our own unique release of a 25-year-old blended malt Irish whiskey, Kirker Irish whiskey curator Richard Ryan said, according to the Irish News.

The bottles were housed in presentation boxes, which were presented by Kirker at Hasting Hotels.

The Spirit of Agreement is a special edition of Kirker Greer Shamrock Irish whiskey, which is a blend comprising whiskey stocks from each of Irelands four provinces.

For The Spirit of Agreement, the four malt whiskeys making up the blend were aged 25 years in bourbon, Port, oloroso and marsala casks before being blended in Belfast.

Were proud that our whiskey emulates the principles of the Good Friday Agreement each expression has its own history but together they harmonise to create something even more wonderful, Ryan said.

Kirker Greer first released Shamrock in March 2022.

The Good Friday Agreement, aka Belfast Agreement, was signed on April 10, 1998, to end most of the violence of the Troubles, a conflict in Northern Ireland that lasted about 30 years.

Hispanic voters have soured on Biden. Now he needs to win them … – POLITICO

Bilingual outreach is still one of the most important components of presidential campaigns, said Jess Morales Rocketto, chief of Moonshot Strategies at Equis Research and a former digital organizing director for Hillary Clinton. She pointed to Bernie Sanders campaign in 2020 as an example of intentional Spanish usage that propelled the senator to a stronghold on Latino engagement.

I have firsthand knowledge of not only how much it resonates with the community, but also how much work it takes, Morales Rocketto said of the Biden website launch. Its good that theres two years here where they can really work out the kinks I dont think the problem is making mistakes. The problem is when you dont have a strategy. The problem is when you dont respect us in your policy positions, in your personnel positions.

Republicans are keen to expose any fissures between Biden and Latino voters. They have adopted aggressive media strategies to reach that voting bloc and accused Democrats of misunderstanding the fundamental issues that animate them.

What it tells me is that after four years, his Hispanic operation is still a mess, said Giancarlo Sopo, a Republican media strategist who specializes in bilingual communications and Hispanic outreach. He cited word-for-word mistranslations that could be confusing for native Spanish speakers as an example the campaign is not that serious about going after the Hispanic vote or that theyre ill-suited for that task.

The stakes for Biden are high. As he launches his reelection, there are doubts about whether hell be able to replicate that multiracial excitement, even if he might face off against Trump again. His favorability has dropped across the board since last year, falling nearly 30 points among Latinos in some polling.

Theres evidence that Hispanic voters helped deliver Democrats big Senate wins of 2022 in Arizona and Nevada. A coordinated effort by Democratic groups focused on turning out more voters in a non-presidential election year and ramping up spending on Spanish-language advertising. By doing so, the demographic stretched several margins during the midterms, tipping the scale for Democratic senate and gubernatorial candidates. Hispanic voters are the second-largest voting bloc in the country, which means improving margins among this group can pay dividends in key states.

Both parties argue that they made the most significant inroads with those communities last year. But for Democrats, replicating that momentum in a scaled-up presidential year is a higher degree of difficulty.

They need to engage these voters more deeply, earlier, and focus on strengthening their economic message, said Janet Murgua, president of Latino advocacy organization UnidosUS. Not all of the achievements and outcomes and impacts that have resulted from the Biden administrations proposals and policies are clearly understood to be connected to the president.

Bidens campaign faced criticism during the 2020 cycle for not devoting enough attention or resources to engaging Latinos compared to a more intense focus on white and Black voters. The most senior Latina official on his last campaign tasked with Hispanic outreach quit as well, frustrated over lack of input.

Biden and his team say they have a good platform to make the case for finishing the job.

Murgua said the partys strategy should focus on touting Bidens economic policies, consistently the top issue among Latino voters. The impact of the child tax credit and pandemic-era stimulus checks were important for financially boosting Hispanic households, she added. Though those policies are all in the rearview mirror. Officials close to the campaign said lower healthcare costs, job creation and decreasing unemployment rates will also be top messaging priorities this year.

Several sources said Chvez Rodrguezs appointment in particular showcased how serious the president is about reaching Latino audiences, boosted by the presence of Texas Rep. Veronica Escobar of El Paso as a national co-chair.

As a veteran of two administrations and having experience in organizing, Chvez Rodrguezs ability to connect with Latinos across the country, Murgua said, makes her a home run pick for Biden.

Though the Biden administration is less than a week into the campaign, some polls show the slight majority of Hispanic registered voters have a negative impression of the president. He has an average of about 35 percent favorability across the last three relevant Quinnipiac polls with Hispanic voters. Thats even with his performance among white voters, where he had a 36 percent favorability rate within the same period.

Those numbers among Latinos are a stark drop from a sweeping poll conducted by UnidosUS following the 2022 midterms that showed Hispanic support at a 64 percent approval rate compared to 42 percent of white respondents who approved of Bidens performance.

Favorability at this point doesnt always track with vote share. Former President Barack Obamas approval fell to 49 percent at the end of 2011, though he rebounded to garner 71 percent of the Hispanic vote during his 2012 reelection. Meanwhile, Trumps approval rating among Hispanics hovered around 30 percent in January 2019, and he received around 32 percent of the vote in 2020.

A Democratic campaign official said this cycle will expand on efforts from the midterms, where the organization spent seven figures on Spanish-language print and radio ads in states with strong Hispanic populations. This will include more bilingual outreach on platforms like WhatsApp and social media sites, as well as continuing culturally competent radio and TV spots.

Spanish speakers comprise around 10 percent of adult American residents, with significant populations in some battleground states like Arizona and Nevada two states potentially crucial to a Biden reelection campaign. They are also more likely to support Democratic candidates than English-dominant voters, though they tend to be less motivated to show up to cast a ballot.

Seeing this early engagement of voters and voters of color by this campaign gives us a lot of encouragement that this is going to be an inclusive campaign that talks to our voters early, consistently, said Nathalie Rayes, president and CEO of Latino Victory. Were excited to see that leadership at the table.

Advocates broadly applauded the central role of Chvez Rodrguez and other Latino and Black leaders on Bidens campaign team, but some say that representation is still the minimum when it comes to engaging voters.

That alone is not going to be something that is going to really sway Latino voters to come out for President Bidens reelection campaign, said Mayra Lpez-Zuniga, a political strategist with the progressive group Mijente. We need a little bit more substance and be able to talk about policies and things that have actually changed the material conditions of people on the ground.

Brakkton Booker contributed to this report.

Hillary Clinton Rips Republicans With The Help Of Another Donald – Yahoo News

Hillary Clinton used a photo of her family from the 1980s to throw shade at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) over his escalating battle with Disney.

On Tuesday, the former secretary of state shared a throwback snap of herself, then-future President Bill Clinton and their daughter Chelsea Clinton celebrating the 50th anniversary of Disney character Donald Duck in 1984.

As Republicans declare war on Disney, I know whose side Im on the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate tweeted.

DeSantis attacks on Disney began when the entertainment company publicly criticized his Dont Say Gay law.

The potential 2024 GOP candidate has moved to strip Walt Disney World resort of its self-governing status and on Monday even suggested a state prison could be built on land next door.

The escalating feud has not been popular among high-profile conservatives, however, drawing criticism from former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former President Donald Trump.
