Medway 4, Franklin 2: Brodeur big in Senior Babe Ruth playoff win – Milford Daily News

Jake Brodeur helped the Medway Senior Babe Ruth team remain perfect this summer with a 4-2 win over Franklin in the first game of a best-of-three playoff series.

MEDWAY With runners on first and second base, and two outs, Franklin found itself down two runs in the top of the seventh of its Central Mass. Senior Babe Ruth playoff game with Medway.

Still, all Franklin needed was an extra-base hit to tie the game.

What Franklin received, however, was a single from Thomas Houlihan.

The hit wasnt smacked hard enough to plate Cam Benham from second base, however, but it loaded the bases or so it looked with Colin Flaherty coming up to hit.

Yet, Flaherty didnt even get a chance to step into the batters box.

After each runner advanced one base following the hit from Houlihan, Andrew DiLeo, who advanced to second base on the single, was caught too far off second base making a turn for third and was tagged out.

It was the final out in Medways 4-2 win over Franklin in Sundays playoff contest at Medway High School.

The Medway win is the first it needs in the best-of-three South Final playoff series.

The two teams will meet again at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at Fletcher Field in Franklin.

On Sunday, however, it was Jake Brodeur who led the charge for Medway (19-0) from the mound.

He pitched the entire game, striking out six, while allowing seven hits and walking three. The biggest help he received was from his defense, which didnt commit an error as Medway remains perfect on the summer.

[The fielding] changes everything, Brodeur said. You just let them hit it. Thats the only thing you need to do, especially when you have this defense.

Brodeur allowed a run in the first inning and another run in third inning, but retired the side in the fourth and fifth innings to halt any other threats. He allowed three runners to reach base in the seventh two on singles and one on a walk but got out of the jam to earn the win.

In the beginning, not really much was working for me, Brodeur said. Then I settled in [and] let the defense do the work. You [have to] try and keep them off balance so they dont know whats coming.

Medway manager Ted Coppinger was more than happy about his star pitchers outing.

Hes as good a competitor as there is in this league and whatever other leagues are around here, Coppinger said. Hes the leader of this team.

Medway trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning. But thats when its luck turned.

Cam Forbes hit a dribbler in front of the mound but on an overthrow by Franklin pitcher Matt Dumart allowed Forbes to scamper to third base.

Dumart then threw a wild pitch, which allowed Forbes to score Medways first run. Brodeur and Joe Downing then drew walks before Adam Cookson hit a pop-up. Ryan Pepin followed with a walk to load the bases.

Thats when Chase Phenegar hit a groundball to second base, which was bobbled by Franklins second baseman, allowing Brodeur to score.

Matt Kaplan then knocked in two runs on a base hit to center field, giving Medway its third and fourth runs of the game, which was all it needed behind Brodeur.

Kaplan is not an everyday regular for our team, but throughout the course of year, especially in games were not hitting, hell step up there and bang a hit, Coppinger said. The kid can hit, so hell be fun to coach for the next few years, I hope.

Though Medway only managed three hits compared to Franklins seven Medway walked five times and also stole four bases, while taking advantage of two wild pitches. We make pitchers work, Coppinger said. There is concern [with only three hits]. We have good hitters. We had a couple balls on the barrel that got caught. We [have] batting cages so hopefully our guys will be hitting there tomorrow and will get it going.

Matt Dumart pitched 3 2/3 innings as Franklins starter. He allowed four runs on two hits and four walks, and he also struck out four.

Franklins Bryan McGrath had a sacrifice fly in the first inning, which scored Joe Corsi. Steve Ferguson had an RBI single in the third inning, which scored Mike Skaza.

But thats all Franklin could muster off of Brodeur.

It comes down to making a couple more plays and thats exactly what they did, Franklin co-manager Phil Chisholm said. Nothing to hang your heads at. We get to go home tonight and hopefully get the win tomorrow and tie things up. We just have to play a clean game.

Thats the big thing.

Astros end Orioles’ 4-game winning streak with 8-7 victory – Corsicana Daily Sun

BALTIMORE A commanding lead had been reduced to one run during a wild ninth inning, and the Houston Astros found themselves turning to their closer to hold off the Baltimore Orioles.

In the end, the best team in the American League found a way to win again.

Rookie Yuli Gurriel had a career-high four hits, including a home run, and the Astros squeezed out an 8-7 victory on Friday night to end Baltimore's four-game winning streak.

Houston took an 8-2 lead into the ninth before Adam Jones hit a two-run double off James Hoyt and Jonathan Schoop homered with two on against Chris Devenski.

After Chris Davis was thrown out trying to bunt against the shift, Ken Giles struck out Mark Trumbo to earn his 21st save.

"It was a mess of an inning from the beginning," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "They obviously put some good at-bats together. It can happen fast in this park.

"All's well that ends well with a win albeit a stressful one in the end."

Colin Moran hit his first major league homer and first triple for Houston, and Brian McCann also went deep.

Working in 90-degree temperatures on a steamy night at Camden Yards, Mike Fiers (7-4) threw 105 pitches over seven innings. The right-hander struck out nine, including Jones three times, and allowed one run and six hits.

"My hands were getting a little moist there. It was kind of hard to grip the ball a little bit," Fiers said. "I just had to find a way to get through."

Coming off a four-game sweep of the Texas Rangers, the Orioles hoped to continue their surge against baseball's other team from the Lone Star State. Instead, Baltimore fell behind 5-0 in the second inning and dropped four games under .500.

The Orioles did, however, make a game of it.

"We don't ever roll over. That's just not who we are," Davis said.

Davis is in the lineup to hit home runs, which left him open for criticism after he bunted against Devenski in the ninth inning of a one-run game.

"Honestly after the first couple of pitches, I just felt like I wasn't really seeing the ball well," Davis said. "I saw him more over, and I went for it."

Ubaldo Jimenez (4-6) gave up six runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. In four starts this month, he's yielded 21 runs and 31 hits over 19 innings.

"I guess I'm leaving a couple pitches up and they're making me pay for it," he said.

Houston used a two-out RBI single by Carlos Beltran and Gurriel's 12th home run to take a 3-0 lead in the first. Moran tripled in a run and scored on a groundout in the second.

Jimenez has allowed 32 runs in the first two innings of his 15 starts. Although he settled down in this one, the early deficit was too much for Baltimore to overcome.

McCann homered leading off the sixth and Moran's first long ball in the big leagues came in the eighth inning, a solo shot off Richard Bleier.

Houston finished with 16 hits, at least one from every starter.

TWIN CORAS

Astros bench coach Joey Cora left the team to be with his newly expanded family after his wife gave birth to twins Friday. He is expected to miss this series and will rejoin the team Monday in Philadelphia.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Astros: RHP Dallas Keuchel (neck) will make perhaps his final rehab appearance Saturday, this time with the Class A Tri-City ValleyCats. "We will certainly consider this being his last time. He's itching to get back at this level," Hinch said.

Orioles: INF Ryan Flaherty (shoulder) will accompany the team to Tampa Bay next week and could start playing rehab games on Thursday. He's been out since mid-May.

UP NEXT

Collin McHugh makes his 2017 debut Saturday night for the Astros after being shelved with right shoulder tendinitis and making four rehab appearances with Double-A Corpus Christi. After Friday's game, Houston optioned LHP Raymin Guduan to Triple-A Fresno to make room for McHugh on the roster. Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman (1-5, 7.20 ERA) tries to build on his last start, when he allowed one run in six innings against Texas. Tillman is winless since his season debut on May 7.

Franklin 2, Bellingham 0: Fitting finale in playoff series win for Franklin – MetroWest Daily News

It was a fitting end to an exciting series.

FRANKLIN It was a fitting end to an exciting series.

Heading into Game 3 after splitting its first two playoff games, both Franklin and Bellingham had reason to believe it was going to advance in the Central Mass. Senior Babe Ruth playoffs.

And in the series finale, both teams followed a familiar script with the outcome coming down to the wire.

Ian McSweeney of Bellingham and Bryan McGrath of Franklin both pitched complete games, but Franklin plated two runs in the fourth inning to win 2-0 and advance to play Medway in the South division of the playoffs.

Franklin will head to Medway to play Game 1 of the series at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.

This was a mirror of the first time we played Bellingham this season, Franklin manager Phil Chisholm said. We have played these guys more than anybody the last couple years. We have played them in the playoffs every single year and every game is a battle.

Franklin did not have much success against McSweeney overall, but managed to get a few hits in the fourth inning.

Andrew Chisholm had a one-out single before Steve Ferguson struck out. Then Cam Benham singled to put runners on first and second base with two outs.

Cam Lupien then launched a double to center field, allowing both Chisholm and Benham to score what proved to be the decisive, and only, runs of the game.

The two runs came on the heels of Franklin threatening to score some runs an inning prior.

Lupien led off the inning with a single. Ferguson was then hit by a pitch and Matt Dumart walked to load the bases.

Colin Flaherty proceeded to line a ball right at Bellingham shortstop Sean Williamson, who caught it and then tossed it over to third base for a double play. Joe Corsi was then hit by a pitch to reload the bases before Mike Skaza flew out to end the threat.

The story of the game, however, was the pitching from both McGrath and McSweeney.

The Franklin starter struck out nine batters over seven innings while walking three and allowing three hits.

I was tired a little bit, McGrath said. But its a big game and you [have] to pull through especially in the playoffs here and you have to do it for the guy next to you. Thats what I did and got the win.

McGrath had to pitch as well as he did, because on the other side stood McSweeney, who went six innings while walking one and allowing two earned runs off of six hits.

He pitched very well tonight, McGrath said of his counterpart. That double by Lupien was nice, it got me some run support, and that felt huge going out there the next inning.

It was nice that Bryan could go the whole game, Chisholm said. It saved pitchers for the next series, and we also have Cam Lupien, who started Game 1 for us, got the big hit and drove in two runs for us. It seems like every game we have a different kid whos contributing, and when I pull guys off of the bench they are contributing as well. It just leaves everybody with a really good feeling.

Game 1 saw Franklin dismantle Bellingham in a 11-1 mercy-rule game, and then Bellingham bounced back to win a tightly-contested Game 2 by the score of 10-8. It was anyones guess to what would transpire in a win-or-go-home Game 3, but McGrath seemed confident going into the contest.

We know were a good team, McGrath said. We come out every single day and work hard in the infield and outfield, and were always ready to play. So, today, we knew we were going to win, to come in and get the W and thats what we did.

Falling in Game 3 ends Bellinghams season, but Bellingham manager Jeff Dunn was pleased with his teams effort and progress.

Franklin is probably the toughest team we faced all season, he said. Its unfortunate that were on this end. Obviously only one team can win, but I think we definitely progressed throughout the season and got better, and we really put up a tough fight against them

We really set the tone in Game 2 to set us up for this third game, and give us an opportunity to get to the next round.
