Norwich improves to 17-1-2 – Rutland Herald

NORTHFIELD Senior defenseman Cody Smith capped a big weekend with another four-assist performance to lead the Norwich University mens ice hockey team to a 6-1 victory over Saint Anselm on Saturday night.

The four-assist performance was Smiths second in as many games for an eight-point weekend, helping the No. 2 Cadets extend their unbeaten streak to 14 games.

Senior Nick Pichette tallied one goal and two assists as the Cadets maintained their eight-point lead on New England College in the league standings.

Freshman Todd Jackson opened the scoring at the 2:48 mark of the first period with an unassisted tally off a defensive miscue between Saint Anselms goalie and a defender. Saint Anselms Shayne Joyce made a save on a dump from Paul Russell. He then possessed the puck and played it over to a defender, but Jackson stole the puck and beat Joyce between his arm and body for a 1-0 lead.

Tyler Piacentini scored for the fourth time in the last five games with a wrist shot to make it 2-0 at the 18:35 mark of the first period. Smith and Alec Brandrup picked up the assists. Brian Rowland blasted a 5- on- 3 power play shot from the point through traffic to make it 3-0 off assists from Connor Evaneglista and Pichette. Pichette increased the lead to 4-0 at the at the 13:17 mark off assists from Smith and Flaherty for his ninth of the season.

Pelletier made it 5-0 at the 17:18 mark for his 11th of the season off assists, thanks to assists from Smith and Brandrup.

Payton Baldillez scored his second goal of the season at the 5:23 mark of the third period with a sneaky wrist shot that found its way through a screen and past Colin Soucy to make it 6-0. Flaherty and Smith picked up the assists. Saint Anselm broke up Braeden Ostepchuks shutout bid with 1:33 left in the game when Bryan Green roofed a shot past into the back of the net.

Ostepchuk improves to 11-0 after making 24 saves. Norwich (17-1-2, 12-1-0 NEHC) will host Skidmore and Castleton next weekend at Kreitzberg Arena in its final two regular-season home games of the season.

WOMENS HOCKEY

Castleton 2, Plymouth 2

PLYMOUTH, N.H. Aimee Brands goal late in the second period brought Castleton from behind for the second time as the Spartans tied Plymouth 2-2 in New England Hockey Conference play Saturday.

Felecia Bjalvegard and Sabrina Hosner assisted and Bre Babiarz had the assist on a goal by the Spartans Jocelyn Forrest.

Alexis Kalm had 21 saves for the Spartans, who are 4-10-3 overall and 3-5-1 in NEHC play.
