Black Lives Matter: "Awareness Has Been Raised; However, That Doesn’t Really Translate Into Action" – WAER

Black Lives Matter says recent incidents involving police and Syracuse residents show there is still progress to be made with equality in the justice system. The group protested alleged police brutality today outside the citys federal building. Theyre calling for justice for last years Fathers Day shooting and an alleged rape by a police officer.

Organizer Herve Comeaubelieves the shooting of Terry Maddox connects Syracuse with the cases of police violence nationally.

I do think that was an example of police racism," Comeau said. "I think so often we hear the narrative of he was reaching for his belt. I think, more often than not, when we have videos, we see that this account is not true.

Comeau says a gun was never found on Maddoxs body, but a grand jury found the officer acted responsibly in shooting an armed suspect.

He believes the movements continued notice has improved awareness and passion for the fight against police violence.

I think the greatest progress were making is community cohesion. Our community is coming together. Were supporting each other," Comeau said. "The truth is that we dont have that much agency, so even though were more solidified than ever, it doesnt translate into political power yet, so it cant just be us. We need all of Syracuse."

Despite this cohesion, Comeau says the area has not seen significant change on the issues. He believes this is especially prominent in the statewide issue of prosecuting 16 and 17-year-olds as adults.

I think awareness has been raised; however, that doesnt really translate into action," Comeau said. "We see this now with DA Fitzpatrick fighting for his right to charge 16-year-olds as adults. The awareness is there, but I think more and more white allies are aware of whats going on, and we need to translate that into people power; into actual action.

Organizer RahzieSeals is the daughter of a Syracuse police officer. She says Black Lives Matter is just seeking justice for the people in Syracuse.

If you look on the website for the movement for black lives, they have a platform there, which talks about political justice, social justice, economic justice," Seals said. "Its a whole platform there that pretty much plans out what we should do to make everything better.

The Syracuse organizers are especially concerned with the treatment of kids in schools and the school to prison pipeline.

Why do we need Eric Holder as outside counsel? – Paradise Post

According to both the California State Constitution and the California Government Code, the Attorney General acts the states chief law enforcement official, charged with the fair and equitable enforcement of the law.

Additionally, he or she is the head of the Department of Justice, and oversees both District Attorneys and county sheriffs.

But its the final responsibility listed with which we are concerned:

Acts as the chief counsel in state litigation.

Why, then, does California need Eric Holder?

In January, the California State Legislature retained the law firm of Covington & Burling, the firm that former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder rejoined upon leaving the federal government in 2015. The Legislatures stated aim was that a team Covington and Burling, led by Holder, would act as outside counsel to advise the Legislature regarding probable conflicts with the Trump Administration.

To the tune of $25,000.00 a month out of the pockets of the California taxpayer.

Former Deputy Attorney General and current Assemblyman Keven Kiley, (D) Rocklin, made his case to the Opinion Unit of the State Attorney Generals Office that hiring Holder and his firm as outside counsel violates Article VII of the California Constitution. Kiley cited years of state court findings that found Article VII as forbidding private contracting for services that are of a kind that persons selected through civil service could perform adequately and competently

Among other responsibilities assigned to the Attorney General that would be assumed by Holder and his team were assisting in defending California against federal actions. This is a duty specifically assigned to the attorney general.

One must wonder if either a) the state government has so little faith in newly elected attorney general, former state Congressman Xavier Becerra that contracting outside counsel was necessary, or b) that the Legislature wanted an expert in end runs around the U.S. Constitution, as well as that of the state.

It would appear to be the latter, as representatives for both Anthony Rendon, Speaker of the Assembly, and Kevin de Len President pro Tempore of the Senate assert the Legislature is immune from those regulations that govern an executive department.

Not surprising, as de Len now famously asserted half his family are in the country illegally and with forged documents.

In an interview with the New York Times, de Len said, Having the former attorney general of the United States brings us a lot of firepower in order to prepare to safeguard the values of the people of California. This means we are very, very serious.

About what?

Flagrant disregard for Title 18 of US Code, and the movement to make California a Sanctuary State? On April 22nd, 2013, Holder said to the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund: Creating a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million unauthorized immigrants in this country is essential. The way we treat our friends and neighbors who are undocumentedby creating a mechanism for them to earn citizenship and move out of the shadows transcends the issue of immigration status. This is a matter of civil and human rights.

So criminality is now a human right?

Perhaps the issue is the promotion of Governor Browns anti- Climate Change policies. After all, President Trump is due to sign an executive order instructing the Environmental Protection Agency to roll back the Clean Power Plan; an Obama initiative to reduce carbon emissions from power plants and require individual states to reduce their emissions.

Holders tenure as Attorney General was riddled with scandals ranging from the surveillance of reporters to threats of retaliation for Hate Speech aimed at Muslims. Holder is the only Attorney in history to have been held in contempt of Congress for his refusal to provide subpoenaed documents relating to the Fast and Furious scandal. This is not to mention his failure to act as regarding unfair targeting of conservative groups by the IRS.

Apparently, de Len thinks these are the values of the people of California that must be safeguarded.

It would appear former California Attorney General and newly elected Senator Kamala Harris agrees. In her March 24, 2017 article in the San Francisco Chronicle entitled Why I cannot support Judge Gorsuch, she cited well known progressive Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall:

You do what you think is right, and you let the law catch up.

Welcome to California, where the rules are made up, and the law doesnt matter.

Border Democrat Says I Don’t Believe In Separation of Church and State – San Antonio Current

Eddie Lucio Jr. is a unique kind of Democrat in the Texas Senate, a devout Catholic from the states border lands who openly admits that his faith guides his decisions as a lawmaker. Over the years, that has meant Lucio's been quick to help his colleagues across the aisle champion policies his party generally eschews like supporing greater abortion restrictions for abused or neglected teenage girls, school vouchers or a gay-marriage ban.

So it was little surprise when Lucio came out as the only Democrat in the Texas Senate to support the other partys red-meat social conservative item for the session Senate Bill 6, a measure that would, in many cases, ban transgender people from using public restrooms that match their gender identity. This week, Lucio explained the decision by doubling down on his faith-driven approach to policymaking, telling a Rio Grande Valley NBC station, I dont believe in separation of church and state.

But is that really the reason Lucio voted to advance SB6? The issue got a little more clouded last month when the Quorum Report (a sometimes wonky, deeply-reported newsletter on Texas politics) discovered that the bills author had quietly slipped a $5 million rider into the senates spending plan to help fund a pet project in Lucios district, a historic adobe mansion and birding center in McAllen. And all in a tight budget year where lawmakers are having to cut elsewhere.

Lucio told the Valley TV station this week that the project's convenient boost in funding had nothing to do with his vote on the anti-trans bill. Everything that I do, I look at it as an act of faith, a moral obligation that I have for all people.

Lucio kept pressing the doctor, Colt Keo-Meier, on how a trans persons presence in a public restroom might violate someones privacy. Keo-Meier responded with a question: How does my existence violate your privacy?

So Lucio followed up by asking Keo-Meier if he believes in god. When the doctor answered yes, this was Lucios response: Do you also believe in altering his creation? When Keo-Meier brought up the discrimination trans people face every day, Lucio was dismissive, offended even. I am against segregation, OK? I lived through the civil rights era, which you did not. This is no where close to that.

Naturally, Lucio ended the exchange on a pious note: I embrace all human beings. Thank you very much.
