5 facts about illegal immigration in the U.S. | Pew Research Center – Pew Research Center

For the first time, the number of unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. was lower in 2015 than it was at the end of the Great Recession in 2009. The origin countries of unauthorized immigrants also shifted during that time, with the number from Mexico declining and the number from other regions rising, according to the latest Pew Research Center estimates.

Here are five facts about the unauthorized immigrant population in the U.S.

1There were 11 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. in 2015, a small but statistically significant decline from the Centers estimate of 11.3 million for 2009.

The Centers preliminary estimate of the unauthorized immigrant population in 2016 is 11.3 million, which is statistically no different from the 2009 or 2015 estimates because it is based on a data source with a smaller sample size and larger margin of error. Unauthorized immigrants represented 3.4% of the total U.S. population in 2015. The number of unauthorized immigrants peaked in 2007 at 12.2 million, when this group was 4% of the U.S. population.

2Mexicans may no longer be the majority of U.S. unauthorized immigrants. They made up half of all unauthorized immigrants in 2016, according to the Centers preliminary estimate, marking the first time in at least a decade that they did not account for a clear majority of this population. Their numbers (and share of the total) have been declining in recent years: There were 5.6 million Mexican unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. in 2015 and 2016, down from 6.4 million in 2009.

Meanwhile, the number of unauthorized immigrants from nations other than Mexico has grown since 2009, from 5 million that year to 5.4 million in 2015. Non-Mexicans numbered 5.7 million in the preliminary 2016 estimate, a total that was not statistically different from 2015.

From 2009 to 2015, the number of unauthorized immigrants from Asia and Central America rose. Increases in the number from other countries have mostly offset the decline in the number from Mexico (and a relatively small decrease in the number from South America).

3The U.S. civilian workforce includes 8 million unauthorized immigrants, accounting for 5% of those who were working or were unemployed and looking for work, according to separate Pew Research Center estimates. The 2014 number was unchanged from 2009 and down slightly from 8.2 million in 2007. The share of unauthorized immigrants in the civilian labor force was also down slightly from 2009 (5.2%) and 2007 (5.4%). Compared with their 5% share of the civilian workforce overall, unauthorized immigrants are overrepresented in farming and construction occupations (26% and 15%, respectively). In all industries and occupations, though, they are outnumbered by U.S.-born workers.

4Six states account for 59% of unauthorized immigrants: California, Texas, Florida, New York, New Jersey and Illinois. But individual states have experienced different trends. From 2009 to 2014, the unauthorized immigrant population decreased in seven states: Alabama, California, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Nevada and South Carolina. In all of them, the decline was due to a decrease in unauthorized immigrants from Mexico. In six states, the unauthorized immigrant population rose over the same time period: Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington. In all of these but Louisiana, the increases were due to growth in unauthorized immigrant populations from nations other than Mexico. (In Louisiana, the overall increase was driven by an increase in Mexican unauthorized immigrants.)

5A rising share of unauthorized immigrants have lived in the U.S. for at least a decade. About two-thirds (66%) of adults in 2014 had been in the U.S. at least that long, compared with 41% in 2005. A declining share of unauthorized immigrants have lived in the U.S. for less than five years 14% of adults in 2014, compared with 31% in 2005. In 2014, unauthorized immigrant adults had lived in the U.S. for a median of 13.6 years, meaning that half had been in the country at least that long. Only 7% of Mexican unauthorized immigrants had been in the U.S. for less than five years in 2014, compared with 22% of those from all other countries.

Illegal Immigration to United States Drops Bigly – Heat Street

Donald Trump promised on the campaign trail that illegal immigration would drop under his administration. According to some new numbers, it looks like hes delivering.

A press release from the Department of Homeland Security showed a dramatic reduction in the number of arrests and apprehensions at the southern border. In February, law enforcement agencies captured 18,754 individuals down from more than 40,000 a year before. In March, that number was even lower at 12,193.

At the same time, arrests by immigration officials away from the border increased by around a third during the first three months of 2017. Federal agents arrested 21,362 people in January through March, compared to only 16,104 in 2016.

The number of arrests of illegal immigrants with no criminal records since entering the country more than doubled in the first three months of 2017 as well. A senior Immigration and Customs Enforcement official told NPR that his agency has been able to open the aperture on the kinds of immigrants it can arrest.

Aleaked Department of Homeland Security report showed that the agency plans on expanding its immigration crackdown by speeding up the hiring of officers, identifying more illegal immigrant hotspots, and allocating money for border wall designs.

What [the Trump administration is] trying to do are very splashy, draconian enforcement efforts that are really meant to tell people: nobody is safe, and nobody should come thats not documented, says Donald Kerwin, executive director of the Center for Migration Studies, a liberal immigration think tank.

Mike Pence’s first 100 days: He’s stayed above the fray, but what does that say about his influence? – Indianapolis Star

Vice President Mike Pence's first 100 days in the Trump Administration have been filled with one major success, one big failure and many trips to Capitol Hill and abroad pursuing the president's agenda. Here's a look at his tenure so far. Wochit

WASHINGTON Two moments. One of success and satisfaction. The other bitter disappointment. Together they illustrate the role that Vice President Mike Pence has played at the start of the new administration.

Before Pence walked into the Senate chamber on April 7 to preside over the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, he stopped to savor what was about to happen.

Its a great day, Pence told Leonard Leo, the Federalist Society leader with whom Pence worked closely on the nomination.

After all, having a Republican choose the replacement for Antonin Scalia had been one of Pences top sales pitches to fellow conservatives, particularly those not yet sold on the top of the ticket.

It was a pledge thatresulted ina strong success.

But delivering on another top promise for the first 100 days of the new administration repealing the Affordable Care Act proved much harder.

What Google users want to know about Vice President Mike Pence

On March 24 Pence, whose close ties to his former legislative colleagues were seen as a major asset in helping the new administration get legislation through Congress, had to tell President Donald Trump the House didnt have the votes to pass the bill.

That had to be tough news to deliver, said John Hammond, a friend and Republican National Committee member from Indiana.

What House Speaker Paul Ryan described as the growing pains of moving from an opposition party to a governing party have hampered the Trump administrations ability to act quickly. But so, too, have the many missteps of an administration that has been unusually fractious and undisciplined.

While having a hand in both the successes and failures of the new administration, Pence has largely remained above the fray amid the in-fighting for power among those in Trump's inner circle.

Its a good trick to still be part of the team but not have all of the negative stuff thats gone on, said Elaine Kamarck, ascholar at the Brookings Institution who worked for former Vice President Al Gore.

But the question remains whether thats a sign of Pences political skill or his lack of influence.

That is going to be something that we only find out eventually, Kamarck said.

Tony Perkins, the head of the Family Research Council who has known Pence for about two decades and continues to be in contact with him on issues such as protections for religious freedom, said Pence is not pushing his own agenda.

Hes being very deferential to the president, Perkins said. Some would like to see him be more aggressive in advocating for some of these things. But for the long term, and his relationship with the president and for the benefit of the country, I think hes taking the right approach.

Pence declined an interview request. But Hammond said Pence has a broad portfolio, built on the trust he has developed with Trump that is strengthened with frequent contact and collaboration.

Theyve come to an understanding about this partnership theyve formed, he said.

Its clear Pence continues to fill many of the roles he played during the campaign.

Those who know Pence say he seems to be enjoying the job without letting it change him too much.

He was famous for saying in Congress, 'Youve got to vote right and go home for dinner, said Rep. Luke Messer, who represents Pences old congressional district. And I think he takes his job very seriously, but hes managed to keep that same peace about him. Hes going to do the best that he can and stay grounded.

Pence said after the election he would draw inspiration for his new job from George H.W. Bush's tenure under President Reaganbecause Bush served a leader who came to Washington, D.C., to bring transformational change.

Pence was describing his intended role as more helpmate than activist vice president. Ron Klain, who served as top aide to Vice Presidents Al Gore and Joe Biden, said theres not much evidence that Pence has played a significant role on such issues as using military force in Syria or how to move forward on tax reform or an infrastructure package.

He might be being extremely disciplined about rendering that advice in private with the president. If he is, kudos to him, Klain said. But vice presidential influence leaves footprints and were not seeing a lot of footprints.

The decision to launch missiles against Syria was made in Mar-a-Lago, where Trump spends a substantial amount of time, without Pence being there. Even though Pence was video-conferenced in, one way vice presidents have influence is by proximity.

And if the room is in Mar-a-Lago, its harder for Mike Pence to be in the room, Klain said.

The firing of National Security Adviser Michael Flynn after he lied to Pence about his conversations with the Russians painted a confusing picture of Pences internal standing.

On the one hand, Trump said he fired Flynn for misleading Pence. But he never told Pence hed been lied to. Instead, Pence found out by reading about it in The Washington Post.

I dont think that wouldve happened in other recent vice presidencies. I read it as a bad sign for Pence, said Joel Goldstein of St. Louis University, an expert on the vice presidency. Another possibility is just that it reflected governing incompetence and it wasnt directed at Pence.

But while Pence has been given consequential assignments in dealing with Congress, foreign leaders and other spokesperson roles, Goldstein said, you dont get the feeling that this is the second coming of Dick Cheney or Joe Biden at this point.

Theres no question, however, that Pence was heavily involved in Gorsuchs nomination.Along with Trumps chief of staff, top counsel and others, Pence was among the senior administration officials who helped screen the nominees.Once Gorsuch was chosen, Leo said Pence was also one of the three key people who helped make sure this was rolled out timing-wise in the best way possible.

Pence was part of that rollout, giving major speeches and interviews about Gorsuch, and accompanying him to meetings with key senators.

The vice president is obviously someone who is capable of helping to coalesce the center right, Leo said.

Although Pences vote wasnt needed to confirm Gorsuch, he wanted to take advantage of his position as president of the Senate to preside over the vote.

Its something Mike is very proud of, Hammond said. Being in the Senate presidents chair to announce the final vote indicated this is seen as a very important historic moment in the conservative movement as well as within the Trump/Pence administration.

Symbolically, I think it was extremely important for him to be there, Hammond said.

Pences presence was required to break a tie over the nomination of Betsy DeVos to be education secretary, the first time a vice president had to provide the final vote for a cabinet nominee.

Texas investor Doug Deason, a member of the Koch brothers network who backed Trumps candidacy, said DeVos is just one of several Koch network allies with significant roles in the administration, including some who previously worked for Pence.

I think hes had a huge influence on that, Deason said of Pence. Hes very influential in the appointments that have been made so far and will be more influential in the future.

In addition to casting the deciding vote for DeVos, Pence did the same for legislation allowing states to withhold federal funds from Planned Parenthood and other health care providers that perform abortions.

Pence, who led early efforts to defund Planned Parenthood while serving in Congress, also became in Februarythe highest-ranking administration official to appear in person at the March for Life demonstration, an annual event organized by anti-abortion activists.

I dont think it would have been possible to do a better job in the first 100 days on the life issue, said Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser.

Shes still hoping, though, for passage of the GOP health care overhaul bill, which includes blocking federal funding to Planned Parenthood and making permanent an annual budget rider that prohibits federal funding from paying for abortions except under certain circumstances.

After the health care bill was pulled from the floor, Dannenfelser participated in a meeting Pence convened in his office with administration officials, activists and others to reset everyones resolve in getting a bill passed.

I could see it in his face because I was sitting right next to him, Dannenfelser said, that it might not be everything everybody wants, but its a giant step forward.

Asked if she would havebeen invited to that meeting if Pence werent vice president, Dannenfelser laughed.

No. I really dont, she said. There is no better ally to the pro-life movement than Mike Pence. Im only there because of his dedication to the issue. This is so in his DNA.

While Christian conservatives are still waiting for action on some of their top priorities including a "religious freedom" executive order, Perkins said progress is being made and Pences presence is reassuring.

There is a sense of comfort in the fact that youve got a vice president who may not be working from the inside to pass these things or get these things done, Perkins said, but when the president asks for his input, I think theres a great confidence that the vice president is going to provide solid counsel that will be in line with what a lot of evangelicals feel and think.

Trump trusts Pence to take the lead on the ongoing health care negotiations, said North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows, who heads the House Freedom Caucus, the group of hard-line conservatives who were the critical force behind the March implosion of the bill. Since then, Pence has been working with both the conservatives and more moderate members of the House GOP caucus to try to find a bill both sides can support.

Meadows said Pence, who called him multiple times over Congress recent two-week recess (even while on his own vacation) to discuss negotiations, has been as they would say in western North Carolina, like a dog on point that wont give up.

While Trump has lashed out at members of the Freedom Caucus over the bill, Freedom Caucus founder Jim Jordan of Ohio is full of praise for Pence who was helpful to Jordan when he entered Congress in 2007 and is a guy I look up to and continue to look up to.

Pence has particular credibility with the Freedom Caucus because he wasnt afraid, as a member of Congress, to defy his partys leadership on big issues, including his opposition to a Medicare drug benefit and President Bushs signature education bill.

When the Freedom Caucus opposition to the health care legislation came up during a White House meeting with members of the House leadership, Messer told Trump that the caucus members are good people who love their country.

I tapped on Mikes shoulder and said, 'You know Mr. President, a rabble rouser can grow up and become vice president of the United States, Messer said. Mike sort of smiled.

Rep. Tom MacArthur, a leader of the Tuesday Group caucus of centrist Republicans, said Pence also understands lawmakers represent different constituencies. After listening to lawmakers talk about bridging the gap between those representing more conservative and more moderate districts, Pence called a late-night meeting to address that issue, MacArthur said.

During a social dinner of pork chops at the vice presidents residence, Pence had his guests share something about themselves that the others might not have known.

Hes tried to help without going too far, MacArthur said. Ive always found him engaged. I dont think Ive had a meeting with him yet where he didnt have a little brown notebook with him that he takes notes in.

One of their conversations sparked in MacArthur an idea for changes to the health care bill he recently proposed.Eager to tick off a major accomplishment in the first 100 days, the White House pushed for a vote this week. But while MacArthur'samendment won over a number of conservative lawmakers as well as conservative activists groups that had pressured lawmakers to oppose the initial version it's not clear if there's enough support from more moderate members for it to pass.

If it does become law, that could be Pences most important contribution to the administrations first year, Klain said.

But conversely, if he doesnt get it done, then he was given the ball and couldnt get it in the end zone.

Kamarck, however, said Pence is likely to avoid much of the blame because this particular issue is a lot broader than Mike Pence and goes to the whole party.

Pence, while not being able to make Trump more presidential, has been the normal, conservative Republican politician in an often unhinged administration, Kamarck said.

He does seem like hes the only grown-up in the White House, she said. He gives even a Democrat like me hope that this wont be a total disaster.

Hammond said the job is challenging but Pence has maintained his sunny, optimistic personality.

"I know he finds it hard and theres a lot of pressure. But I think he really enjoys being where he is," Hammond said. "He bops out of bed every morning, I think, ready for action."

Caitlyn Jenner planning to meet with VP Mike Pence – Page Six

Caitlyn Jennerhas plans to meet with Vice President Mike Pence.

I know everything thats going on and I know everybody in his and Trumps administration who are for and against, Caitlyn, 67, toldAndy Cohenduring a SiriusXM Town Hallon Wednesday. [Pence] has come up when he was governor [with] some of the most anti-LGBT issues. I know that. The American Unity Fund worked very closely to take that legislation and really get it out of there. And he came back kicking and screaming. And did sign some stuff and did better with that on that issue.

Caitlyn is headed to Washington, DC, on Thursday, but kept quiet about the details of her itinerary.

But the former Olympian, who confirmed she did attend Donald Trumps inauguration, suggested she may have a private dinner with the vice president to discuss LGBTQ issues on her schedule.

Caitlyn previously met the 57-year-old VP the day before the inauguration at a cocktail party and made plans to meet later.

I walk up looking fabulous, she recalled.Iwas introduced to him and I said, I came in a few months ago and I sat down and had a private dinner with 16, 17 evangelical Christian conservative Republicans at a private dinner, at a private home and we had a three-hour conversation on the issues on faith, on my community.'

I said, It was such a wonderful conversation. I would love to share that conversation with you,' she recalled. He looks at me and said, You know what? I would love to have that conversation.

Caitlyn, who knowsPence wont dine alone with women without his wife, Karen, made an effort to include her. I turn to his wife, who was standing right there. And I reach out and I grab her hand and I look her right in the eye and I said, I would loveto have you in on that conversation. And she looks at me and goes, Dont you worry, Ill be there.'

While the Pences continue to be known for their closeness, Caitlyn revealed that any sort of relationship she had maintained post-divorce with ex-wifeKris Jenner is finished.

She called me up and said she never wanted to talk to me again. So, I never called her back, Caitlyn said.

Caitlyn and Krishave long bickered over whether Kris was aware of Caitlyns gender identity during their relationship. Kris, 61, has denied Caitlyns claims that the Secrets of My Life author told the Kardashian matriarch about her gender issues and hasslammed her memoir as made up.

The former coupledivorced in 2014 after 23years of marriage. They are parents to Kendall, 21, and Kylie, 19.

Kris isnt the only family member currently at odds with Caitlyn.

[Khlo Kardashian] doesnt want to talk to me either, Caitlyn said. But she hasnt talked to me in like two years. Its been well documented on Keeping Up with the Kardashians that Khlo has had the most trouble with her transition.

The conversation also turned to daughter Kendall Jenners recent Pepsi fiasco, which was widely labeled tone-deaf given the current political and social climate. I saw it and I thought, That is cool,' Caitlyn said after attempting to dodge the question. It was cute. I didnt see all the things I guess some other people saw.

After the commercial was pulled, Caitlyn said she felt sorry forher model daughter.

In a sign that Caitlyns family is in turmoil, she asked Cohen one favor at the end of the interview. Tell my family I said hi, she said. Tell them I love them.
