Hillary Clinton to raise money for New Hampshire Democrat

Hillary Clinton is expected to help raise campaign cash for Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire - an important place to maintain friends, should the former secretary of state choose to make a second bid for the White House.

Two Democrats with knowledge of the event confirmed Clinton will join Shaheen at a New York City fundraiser this week, but did not specify a date. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the fundraiser by name before it was announced.

Clinton won the 2008 New Hampshire presidential primary and will need to keep up alliances in the state if she chooses to run for president in 2016. She was also scheduled to host a Washington, D.C., fundraiser for New Hampshire state Sen. Lou D'Allesandro on Tuesday, but rescheduled due to the birth of her first grandchild. The former secretary of state also dropped plans Tuesday to headline a fundraiser for Maryland's Democratic gubernatorial nominee in order to spend time with her granddaughter. Former President Bill Clinton attended that event in her place.

Hillary Clinton has not traveled to New Hampshire since 2008, but recently visited Iowa, home of the first presidential caucuses, for retiring Sen. Tom Harkin's annual steak fry. Mr. Clinton, whose second place finish in the 1992 primary helped propel him to the nomination, will headline the New Hampshire Democratic Party's annual dinner in October.

Shaheen, who is serving her first Senate term, faces Republican Scott Brown, a former senator from Massachusetts, in November. She is part of the nation's only all-female congressional delegation.

A CNN/ORC International poll released two weeks ago showed Shaheen and Brown tied among likely voters, with both garnering 48 percent support.

Democrats are defending their Senate majority against an onslaught from Republicans, who must gain six seats to claim control of the chamber.

Poll: Hillary Clinton whips Gov. Chris Christie in N.J. in 2016 matchup

HAMDEN, Conn., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Gov. Chris Christie, a lifelong New Jersey resident, trails Hillary Clinton by 10 percentage points in the state in a theoretical presidential matchup.

Clinton gets a big boost from the gender gap, the Quinnipiac University poll said. While Clinton trails Christie by 3 points among New Jersey men, she would get 56 percent of the female vote to 36 percent for Christie.

Overall, 50 percent of voters said they would choose Clinton and 40 percent Christie. Independent voters go for Clinton 46 percent to 40 percent.

Christie, however, does far better against Clinton in the state than some other potential Republican candidates. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky both trail Clinton by 20 points, with Clinton getting more than 60 percent of the women's vote against either.

"The adopted daughter next door whips the native son when it comes to presidential politics in New Jersey," said Maurice Carroll, the poll's assistant director. "Gov. Christopher Christie gives former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton more of a battle in New Jersey, but a huge lead among women voters keeps the lady from Chappaqua, N.Y., ahead of the home- state governor."

Neither Christie nor Clinton has made any announcement about their 2016 plans, although both have been visiting key states.

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) A newly released poll of voter sentiment in the Garden State might give governor Chris Christie cause for concern.

This time last year, the governor was cruising to a re-election landslide. His potential presidential ambitions looked bright.

Now, not so much, according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll.

(He has) a job approval of 46-45 (percent in favor versus percent against) a standoff, says poll director Mickey Carroll. This is the lowest hes been since June of 2011.

And if he were to run for the White House today against Hillary Clinton, the poll finds, she would beat him in his home state by ten points.

Whats going on? Carroll suggests that Bridgegate continues to dog Christie, along with the states pension fund crisis.
