Massive ‘water bomb’ detonates in Ukraine city street as repair job ends in disaster – 9news.com.au

An underground water pipe in Kiev, Ukraine has burst with such tremendous force that it created a "mushroom asphalt" explosion that destroyed cars and rocketed muddy water six storeys high.

Incredible footage recorded on neighbourhood surveillance cameras shows a huge bubble of earth rupturing and blowing apart, similar to a battlefield IED (improvised explosion device).

Local media reports that Tuesday's explosion (AEDT) was caused by hydraulic testing on pipes that were installed in 1979.

A woman walking along Goloseyevsky Avenue is seen on CCTV being hit by a shower of debris and small rubble, while nearby vehicles are buffeted by the shockwave.

An array of cars parked on the street were damaged extensively, as were neighbouring buildings.

The explosion of water, which caused a muddy brown flood to flow down the street, reached heights of 25 metres, according to local reports.

The Kiev city department responsible for maintained of the pipes have confirmed that compensation will be paid out to residents who suffered damage to property.
