Witchmarsh And Its Prequel Tea Party Of The Damned Takes Inspiration From Baldur’s Gate 3 – DualShockers

Highlights

Set in the roaring 1920s of Massachusetts, America, Witchmarch follows a squad of detectives as they hunt for 12 missing townsfolk in a story-rich supernatural mystery. Littered with witches, warlocks and big bad boss encounters, the side-scrolling adventure allows players to take their pick among ten playable characters in a mix of modern and classic RPGs, with branching dialogue and responsive, tactical combat.

Due to the massive influence of Baldur's Gate 3, Inglenook Games has taken a little bit of Larian Studios' magic to help sprinkle in elements from that into Witchmarsh's world, and also its prequel, Tea Party of the Damned.

Chatting with Game Rant in a recent interview, Inglenook Games' writer and game designer behind Witchmarsh's alternate-twenties universe, Luciano Sgarbi, offered some insight into the game currently in development and also its upcoming prequel. When asked which games inspired Witchmarsh and Tea Party of the Damned, Sgarbi happily fired off some popular fantasy RPGs as the team's creative catalyst.

"Witchmarsh is kind of like Baldur's Gate or the Wizardry: Cosmic Forge trilogy games, but as an action platformer." Sgarbi continues. "So they were another two big influences...we've been inspired by the Shadowrun Returns trilogy, that's absolutely fantastic... And finally, most recently, of course, Baldur's Gate 3, because that's shown us what a truly great modern CRPG can deliver."

Akin to Baldur's Gate 3's dark and creature-filled Underdark world, Witchmarsh and Tea Party of the Damned takes place in a similar strange realm where "jelly men" to enormous acid-spitting alien sea urchins aren't unusual creatures to stumbled upon. Players will witness character interactions in Tea Party of the Damned where not everyone is what they seem, and a deeply investigative mind allows secrets to rise to the surface.

Sgarbi also talked about being inspired by Baldur's Gate 3's integrated NPC conversations and its sprawling dialogue, but that Toby Fox's Undertale also served as an inspiration for Tea Party of the Damned in terms of the cell phone mechanic where players could contact the main characters to get their input on various plot events. Coupled with HP Lovecraft's horror, Tea Party of the Damned looks set to offer players a memorable and truly interactive journey which is set to release on Early Access via Steam later this year.
