S.C. tea party expects heavyweights at its 2016 convention

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz warned against nominating a Republican presidential candidate from the mushy middle.

Real estate and TV showman Donald Trump wasnt shy about declaring the last thing this country needs is another Bush.

And retired neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson spoke of the weakening notion of American self-reliance.

Even if Al Sharpton comes along, you are not a victim, he told the enthusiastic crowd.

The four presidential hopefuls, which included former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who spoke at last weekends South Carolina Tea Party Coalition convention threw a few sharp elbows, but the Myrtle Beach gathering drew little national attention, in part because Mitt Romney announced the Friday before that he was considering a third run for the White House.

Next year, though, organizers say they expect the convention to be a heavyweight bout attended by every Republican who wants to court conservative voters ahead of South Carolina early, crucial primary.

I think well have many more next time, Myrtle Beach tea party leader Joe Dugan said.

No date has been set, but the most likely time is six to eight weeks before South Carolinas GOP primary, in mid-February 2016, which would give it maximum exposure.

Dugan, however, said that just being in the GOP primary field next year wont mean a candidate will be invited to speak.

I have no interest in inviting someone like Chris Christie or Jeb Bush, he said. They dont represent the values that middle-class working citizens in America have.
