House Speaker Harwell faces tea party challenge

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) House Speaker Beth Harwell faces a tea party challenge from Rep. Rick Womick as House Republicans vote Wednesday on whom to nominate to lead the lower chamber of the Tennessee General Assembly.

Harwell is a former professor and state Republican Party chairwoman from Nashville who was first elected speaker in 2010. She has worked to build a broad coalition in the House and is a close ally of Gov. Bill Haslam.

Womick, an airline pilot from Murfreesboro, has called Haslam a "traitor to the party" because supporters targeted fellow Republicans in the August primary for disagreeing with the governor on Common Core education standards.

Womick has drawn the support of the Tennessee Firearms Association in his bid to oust Harwell.
